Curling wand or tongs?

Want to create beach wavy hair look and not sure whether I should buy tongs or a wand, which one is best for someone who is useless at this kind of thing?

I've got a wand and love it, the GHD creative curl wand. It's easy to use, I watched a few tutorials on YouTube first. In comparison I found straighteners a pain to use (whereas use my wand twice a week).

Dh bought me this. The whole metal barrel heats up so I think is easier than straighteners per say. And also straighteners too.

Thanks all! I have straighteners but so utterly useless as trying to use them to curl and so sick of burns I’ve decided to take action and get a new toy to turn my hair into beach waves!

I always seem to get a line from the tongs in mine. Was going to splash out on a wand. Any recommendations? Sorry for the potential hijack

Shenanagins · 29/12/2018 21:21

Definitely want recommendations as really have no clue on this one!

I have a Remington Silk curling wand - this was today's hair, which was curls then I brushed out this evening for waves. Not the best picture but I can't be bothered to get up and make it look nice - sorry!

I've attached a screen shot of the thing I think I have. It's nothing fancy but works lovely

I own 5 curling devices Blush

From super cheap £20 to £90 ghd ones.

The Babyliss curl secret is good if you're useless with wands / tongs. But mildly terrifying it eats a section of your hair. I didn't find it quicker or better effect that a wand.

Babyliss 2667U Secret Curl Styler https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00FCBVE0C/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_YL-jCbYW6QFQ5

The ghd curl creative I bought as my last wand, it is great in that it heats up instantly, and the barrel isn't a perfect circle so does waves well. But they don't seem to stay in as well as my other wands.

My favourite for loose waves is

http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/4025311.htm

They stay in well and aren't tight curls.

For tighter curls I have

BaByliss Ceramic Curling Wand Pro https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00BFQ3RSK/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_0P-jCb7X0GS30

Again stay in well after.

And then I have a travel one, a Remington I bought on a whim on amazon offer that I've hardly used.

With the wands I usually always burn myself at least once. I can't wear the heat protector gloves as hair too fine and falls through them. A good hair day is when I haven't burnt my fingers. I have used wands when hair is above shoulder Bob to down to my waist.

For me I used a stay in type product whilst hair is wet, rough blow dry, make sure hair 100% dry and the. Put hairs into three sections (bottom/middle/crown) and the tighter the curl depends on barrel size and also how much hair you wrap. Once you finish a section spray with hair spray but don't comb fingers through.

When all hair done leave as long as possibly before combing fingers through.

My favourite would be the tresemme one

Just to add... if I was going to buy another (I'm not I promise. Honest!!)

I'd get this one, as Ruth from a model recommends swears by it. Says it is easier with the bobbles

Lee Stafford CoCo LoCo Wonderball Ceramic Hair Waver Curling Wand https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B01N76FPU3/ref=cmswwrcppapiii_cW-jCbGVH08CB

Oh god I totally want to order it now.

bellinibobble · 29/12/2018 22:02

I steer clear of the big barrel curlers as the curls just drop out of my hair. A standard Babyliss ceramic wand (£30?) and brushing out the curls once done leaves me with perfect undone waves that last forever.

madmum5811 · 29/12/2018 22:15

How do you do the back when you cannot see it. I use heated rollers for that reason but would love the wave look my hairdresser achieves.

Esqueleto · 29/12/2018 22:18

I have 3 wands, a big barrelled which makes very loose waves, an inverted cone one that I use for retro curls and the babyliss vintage glamour wave maker.

As above I'd go with a standard babyliss ceramic wand and experiment with different techniques and watch some YouTube tutorials.

Arrgh I want to buy more wands now 😂

wombatron · 29/12/2018 22:19

@madmum5811 practice I guess. But I do my hair in 3 layers, then split each half my head into sections. I usually only have 1 or 2 curls per layer at the back that I really can't see but they don't turn out too badlyGrin

Shenanagins · 30/12/2018 10:23

Thanks everyone! Now to get shopping and start the new year with glamorous waves 🤞
