John Lewis beauty counters

Hi, me again!

I'm thinking of going to a beauty counter in John Lewis as a birthday treat to try and work out which skin care/make up I should use to suit my skin type/complexion. I have no idea what I am doing when it comes to this kind of thing so I have no idea which brand is best. Does anyone have any suggestions/recommendations?

I am mid-thirties, olive and fairly clear skin bar a few spots now and again. I would like advice on a skin care routine and also which make up to use for everyday use.

Thanks!

What do you use at the moment?
What is your lifestyle? Do you work in a corporate office etc.?
What is your ongoing budget for products?

Hi @LadyLapsang

I don't really use anything much at the moment - I wash face with a Nivea face wash thing, take make up off with baby wipes Blush. Don't use any moisturiser or other creams. Make up is always minimal, I use Lancôme mascara which I love and concealer for spots but that's it.

I have 2 small children so always tired with dark circles under eyes! I don't have a lot of time to dedicate to beauty as a result of the kids!

I work in a corporate office so need to look smart. Ongoing budget is no lore than £20 a month maximum. However initially I could spend £50-70 to include make up etc.

Hope that helps!!

Bobbi Brown is nice, elegant and classic I would start there.

Skincare?

Liz Earle consultants are lovely and very knowledgeable, as are Clarins.

Wouldn't go to any of the higher end counters for skincare.

(tbh, I'd ask the skincare gurus on here for advice before asking any of the counters! Check out the fantastic skincare threads, the lovely Botemp will give you loads of advice)

Make-up- go and ask for samples and then order them online from places with a % discount (feelunique, salon skincare, allbeauty, cult beauty, lookfantastic etc)

Agree John Lewis counters not good for skincare advice. But if you want someone to show you how to do makeup, recommend colours etc somewhere like Bobbi Brown good.

Thank you so much!! Think I will try Bobbi brown then! Thank you Smile

I have dark skin and Bobbi Brown is just not pigmented enough to show up. Her mascara and foundations are great but her eyeshadows are non-existent on me.

Went to Charlotte Tillbury in the end and they gave me lots of tips and advice. Thanks all!

Oo I am always intimidated by the Charlotte Tilbury counter! I'd love to have a good look but the assistants always look so young and trendy Blush

digestivate · 11/01/2019 06:55

@Ponks it was the first one I saw so just went straight there! Was a bit intimidated by the choice and didn't know where to start. The girl was lovely (but yes, very young and trendy!!) and v helpful!
