What are yours?

To make more of an effort. I've just turned 40 and I'm just not feeling good about myself anymore. I've been a single mum for years and until very recently I've not had the time, money or quite honestly the will to look after myself but I'm sick of looking like a bag lady.

I've been doing SW since early November and have lost a stone and a bit so far, have also started playing rugby and doing more walking (have a Fitbit that nudges me to get off my ass and do my 10,000 steps) but after that I'm a bit stuck. What makes it worse I re marred a couple of months ago and when I asked DH if he thought I was frumpy he said that I wasn't frumpy "per se" but that because I was "a larger lady" it was more difficult for me to find outfits that looked good. My self esteem was a bit wobbly anyway and I know that it's my opinion that counts and no one elses but it made me feel crappy about myself.

Anyone else feeling a bit stuck and want a "sort ourselves out" partner in crime?

Sarcelle · 27/12/2018 04:36

To be more adventurous with clothing. I lost two stones two years ago and have kept it off. This is going to sound boasty but for the first time in years I have a good figure yet I don't show it off. I don't mean by flashing lots of flesh, but I stick to a uniform of dull and uninspiring outfits, like I don't want to be noticed. I am 53, with a bit of disposable income now, and I am going to start dressing chicly.

wellhonestly · 27/12/2018 14:48

I'd like to say "maintain my eyebrows" but I don't know what will make me do it!

CatherineMaitland · 27/12/2018 15:52

Buy a cashmere jumper and find my perfect jeans.

CollyWombles · 27/12/2018 16:05

To have a capsule wardrobe once I am no longer pregnant and back in a reasonable shape!

To do my hair, skin and makeup every day.

To start having my hair dyed at the hair dressers and cut more often.

To stop biting my nails and have nice elegant nails!

Sarcelle · 27/12/2018 16:33

Oh and find a new hairdresser.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 27/12/2018 16:48

To not spend so much on S&B!

I’ve got plenty of clothing, I’ve got lots of bags, quite a few nice coats and jackets and a huge amount of shoes. I’ve got all the make up I need, now that I have splurged a bit in the sales.

In the new year I will spend on a haircut every six weeks (just a simple trim). And on actual necessities as and when they come up, not just in case I might someday have occasion to use them or just because I like them and want them.

I spend to make myself feel happy. I’ve got better at not doing so to excess, for the most part, but I’d really like to make an actual habit of properly mindful non-spending this coming year.

Floisme · 27/12/2018 16:55

To up my health regime. I already take reasonably good care of myself so I’m not not quite sure what I’ve got in mind but I’ve reached the health lottery years and I’m hoping to still be fit in old age. No gyms or yoga though - cannot stand them.

To review my make up, maybe even give it up altogether. I am liking the effect less and less.

To wear something great every day.

Sitranced · 27/12/2018 16:57

I'm going to attempt a nearly no spend year. My wardrobe is pretty full and I love all of it but I can think of 1 or 2 items that I would love but I'm restricting myself to buy second hand and only if it fits perfectly so I may or may not find the perfect item which is ok.

MarmaladeTeepee · 27/12/2018 17:39

I turn 40 in a few months and I finally feel I have a good understanding of what styles and colours suit me, so I'll be sticking to these rather than slavishly following trends. My footwear is lacking though (too many cheap shoes) I'm going to be looking in the sales for quality over quantity.

I gained 2 stone 3 years ago but have never got round to shifting it, I'm determined to do so this year and feel in the right place mentally to achieve this.

I joined the Christmas princessing thread and really upped my skincare regime which is paying off, so I'll keep this up.

whambamthankyou · 27/12/2018 18:02

Love all these. Keep them coming!

I get so sleepy at night due to medication that lately I haven't followed a night time skincare regime let alone removed my make up... as a result my skin is dry & spotty.

So my resolution is to have a nighttime skincare regime - I have a new night cream, just got to start using it!!

AnaViaSalamanca · 27/12/2018 18:53
  1. wear my entire wardrobe, not a fraction
  2. moisturize my body
  3. not buy things that are not my style, that I am not going to wear more than a few times (I am talking to you, silver boots).
OldJoseph · 27/12/2018 18:55

I listed every S&B purchase I made last year. Next year I'm going to try and spend less each month than 2018.
I've got plenty of skincare and make up to use up plus I've had a couple of decent ebay purchases recently which has reminded me to use ebay a bit more, but to be very careful and only buy clothes with accurate descriptions and photographs-'nice dress from Next' isn't good enough.

Oogle · 27/12/2018 18:59

I’m not going to buy any new clothes until I’m less than 9st. (Currently 9st 10)

I’m going to moisturise my body daily. It’s one job I hate doing.

Paint my nails regularly. I used to, but I gave up on it during 2018 and I definitely feel better with nails painted.

JaceLancs · 27/12/2018 21:04

Get back on plan with SW
Regular gel polish even if I do it myself
Wear make up occasionally

iloveruby · 27/12/2018 22:35

Take better care of myself and do things that make me feel good.

I struggle with depression so can go days without washing my hair etc, which in turn makes me feel worse about myself.

I'm going to try to look after my appearance, including spending a bit of money on myself instead of it all going on my horses! I've only got one pair of jeans whereas they have 27 rugs between them Hmm

I'm want to loose weight and get healthier as well as make the most out of my appearance.

It can be a bit of a vicious circle with weight gain, depression, more weight gain, worse depression etc but I'm hoping that I can build a bit of time into each day to look after myself.

brimfullofasha · 27/12/2018 22:51

I would like to loose some weight and get a bit stronger and fitter.
I have worked recently in finding skincare that suits my skin and sticking to a routine. I need to do the same with my hair as it is often a mess. I run out of time to do anything with it and don't have the right products.
I want to start wearing my jewellery again.

Gogreen · 27/12/2018 22:53

My resolution is to be more selfish. I give everything to my young children, work, the house and animals...which is fine, I don’t mind doing it but I need to remind myself I should be higher up the priority list and not below everything!

I also need to get my eyes brows done, but I’m terrified and don’t know where to even begin...literally!

CrazySheepLady · 27/12/2018 23:57

I've definitely neglected my skin over the last couple of years, due to my declining health, but I'm getting back into good habits now so I intend to keep this up. Feeling that I have clear, glowing skin gives me a much needed boost.

GinandGingerBeer · 28/12/2018 00:00

Ooh @Oogle I like that idea. I'm also 9st 10lbs and I want to be 9st 4lbs. (If I go down to 9 stone I lose my arse and my tits turn to rabbits ears! Grin)
I am going to make an exception for the Hush sale as there are a couple of things I have my eye on but they will be my only purchase, so I'll start from Monday 7th jan. How are you planning to lose it? Just by cutting back? I might try and go back to 5:2 as up until recently, I've never put any back on since doing it in 2013.

I've also recently stopped having gels/acrylics after years of having them done, they're now a right old mess so I shall continue with nailtiques strengthener and try and get nice natural nails back.

Oogle · 28/12/2018 14:28

@GinandGingerBeer I go to the gym 3 times a week and have a personal trainer so I discussed it with him today and he reckons 3kg loss by 1st March is easily doable if I kick the booze and eat sensibly (which I’m not great at doing!) but I definitely feel like I have an attainable goal now!

barberousbarbara · 28/12/2018 15:11

After a year of running around looking after everyone else, I'm going to starting taking time to look after myself. I've been out today and bought myself some new make up and I'm determined to use it regularly.

I do need to stop spending on clothes and shoes unless I really need it must step away from the pages of boots on sale

Ponks · 28/12/2018 15:15

My s&b aims for 2019:

  • get my hair cut regularly, sometimes I've left it so long between cuts that it becomes a shapeless mess. A fresh haircut makes me feel so much better and I've found a hairdresser that has somehow managed to make my boring bob look much sharper even in between cuts.
  • use up my stash of products before buying new serums/ eye creams etc. I love trying new stuff but have to economise and use up what I have. It will probably take at least six months just to use up my stack of shower gels!
  • aim to go cruelty free as far as possible. Not sure how I'll replace Doublewear though! It's such a classic.
  • find some decent shoes. Any outfit is always let down by my shoes. I am very much comfort driven and find it so hard to find appropriate shoes for work in particular.
  • not to give in to impulse purchases. I have a Pinterest board of outfits I like and there is a consistent theme (monochrome, not fussy) so I want to keep all purchases more considered and in line with these sort of looks.
  • regular reviews and clear outs of the wardrobe! I did this several times in 2018 and it feels great.
HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 28/12/2018 16:48

@Ponks, A heads up on comfortable but fairly nice shoes: Clark’s and M&S both do a good selection. If you pick well you can look quite stylish/trendy/put together but your feet won’t suffer. And it’s not too expensive either! I get loads of compliments on mine.
