I have been thinking about chopping my hair off, what style should I go for ?

Please inspire me.

I have a round/square face. With very fine and very straight hair, there is a reasonable number of strands but my hair can look lank very easily.

Currently I have no fringe and hair down to my waist (just).

I would prefer to stay without a fringe (also makes it easier to grow out if I hate it) but I need a zero maintenance hair style.

Can anybody please suggest a style that would suit my face - I can get a bit of volume with long hair, but I am worried that a bob would make my face look even fatter.

Thanks

ps - you can see a picture of me in my profile

bump - please

Apart from a mullet I had in the 80's, the last time I had short hair was when I was 3 back in the late 60's

I dont know whether it suits some face shapes and not others but from my exp I would reccomend getting it cut to boob length and then feathered up to your face - ie the front bits on each side of your face layered

does that make sense?

snowwonder · 26/06/2007 22:13

i would go for length-just above shoulder and have some choppy layers added

colette · 26/06/2007 22:17

Debbbiethemum,
How about going for a medium lenghth style first? Feathered onto the face iykwim.Sorry but I think a soft fringe would suit you sort of cut into so it is not too "blocky" If you are really going for it add some high/low lights to accentaute the texture.

Debbiethemum · 26/06/2007 22:19

Yurtgirl - thanks, but I want to go for something a bit radical, so that my hair no longer than my shoulders.

snowwonder - sounds OK, but would I end up with no volume & my face looking very fat?

BTW I asked dh what he thought, he has no idea as he has never seen me (or any pictures of that mullet) with short hair.

thanks for your message colette - I have one of those wierd hairlines (widows peak?) that means that the hairline goes into a definate point on my forehead.
Also had the same parting for 20 years so I could also be stuck with that as it falls naturally.

Could I still do a fringe with that

I'd keep in looking long but have a lot cut off. Start with below shoulder length and get a few long layers cut in around your face. With hair that long (and it is a really pretty colour btw) I think you need to start gradually.

snowwonder · 26/06/2007 22:27

i am not sure but i would have thought choppy layers would add volume rather than all one length just hanging iyswim, and the add texture, mine do anyway... but i really am no expert, i would go to a few salons if you have chance and see what they say and weather you feel comfortable for them to cut your hair..
have you looked in any mags or looked online?

colette · 26/06/2007 22:27

Ii think a long fringe cut at an angle may work , tbh you need a really good reccommended hairdresser. Good luck post the picture after. I am quite excited for you

Aloha · 26/06/2007 22:28

I think you have very nice hair, and you might regret it if you go too short. Think Jennifer Aniston only a bit shorter.

Debbiethemum · 26/06/2007 22:33

The consensus does seem to be keep some of the length but layer it. I will go to my hairdressers and see what we can come up with.

Thanks for the compliments - but surely this doesn't mean that COD is wrong !!!! I am way to old to have long hair according to her.

Agree Debbie, when you described it I thought your long hair sounded a bit hippy, but actually it isn't at all and really suits you. So I'd keep the one-length, or as others have said have a very long, sweeping fringe that connects to the rest of it, and have the rest done in shoulder-length (or shorter) choppy layers. And I would ask friends for recommendations for a really good, trendy hairdresser who is up to date and will listen to you - makes a huge difference. I like getting hair mags to look through as well when I go for a do.

Aloha · 26/06/2007 22:37

I think Jennifer Aniston, Courtney Cox and Julianne Moore all look great with long hair. It's not for everyone, but I think it suits you. I do agree that waist length is too long though.

jellybeans · 26/06/2007 22:38

What about a Dido type layered bob?

HonoriaGlossop · 26/06/2007 23:03

I say go for it. have it cut short. From the photo on your profile your hair is doing nothing FOR you at the moment - it looks in lovely condition but it isn't actually flattering you.

I can see you with a real short cut, with some elfin style layers and I think you'd look so stylish.

Can you tell, I went for the chop this year, from below shoulder length to short and I LOVE it. Go for it - I think you'll regret it if you 'keep the length and have some layers': I've been there so often but within a few days of visiting the hairdressers it's basically just hanging there again, unless you have time to fouff and preen in the a.m?

Debbiethemum · 26/06/2007 23:17

Decisions, decisions.

Actually a friend of mine had hers done recently and it looks very good - I will ask where she had it done. Will also ask another (richer) friend whose hairstyle is closer to whar I was thinking, but I may not be able to afford her hairdressers.

Hopefully they will also be able to give me some opinions.

It will only take a few years to grow it again if a complete disaster!!!!

imo you shouldn't have a fringe or any layers shorter than your chin, they'll make your face rounder.
Not too much volume is good if you have square / round face I think.
I think you'll look great with hair above shoulder length and some layers at the tips iyswim, not short layers.

collision · 27/06/2007 17:31

Ooh go for it!!

Choppy and layers and a soft fring would look lovely!

My hair isnt as long as yours but I am hoping to have it chopped off next week too!

collision · 27/06/2007 17:31

fringe not fring!

Debbiethemum · 27/06/2007 21:22

Well I did it. New photo on my profile page so you can see the before & after effect.

Feels very wierd, but I like it (I think) - your opinions please

LoveAngel · 28/06/2007 14:20

It looks great - much nicer than before (no offence - but it looks more styled and frames your face really nicely). Success!
