Dresses for big on top, smaller on bottom

I've lost a lot of weight over the last year and thought I might give dresses a go again. But every style I try on just looks rubbish.

I've quite a large chest, a bit of a tummy (not too much of one but it's definitely there) and a bum that is slowly shrinking. My bum and legs are the trimmest things about me. So if I have something that fits there I look like an overstuffed sausage on top. Things that fit my top half look like grumpy sacks on the bottom half!

I've been exercising and running and working on reducing my top half, but in the mean time, does anyone know any styles that might look halfway decent on me?

Tara dress might work for you - loose on top, tight on the bottom.

cece · 26/12/2018 06:40

You have similar body shape to me. I wouldn't wear that hush dress. It would make my top half look bigger.

I like a v or scoop neck. Nipped in at waist but not tight. Fabric is important. Nothing clingy. I get s lot of compliments wearing fitted dresses that skim the body. My favourite style is by Mela (bought in new look). It has a v neck and a belt in fake belt at waist. I'll see if I can work out how to do a link using my phone.

Gap ponte

That's my natural shape. I like dresses that are fitted but not tight at the top - you want something to create a waist and smooth lines. A slightly stretchy fabric is best. The bottom half you can do what you want - when I'm not feeling very confident I like a flared dress (50s style), but when I'm slimmer or in decent shape as it sounds like you are, something more fitted is flattering.

My favourite dress is the Caterina by Collectif. It comes in a few different fabrics and two shapes.

@cece wrong link

If you can get to a branch of bravissimo they have clothes with bust fittings, it's the only place I've found with fitted dresses and shirts that fit perfectly

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2018 08:00

Bravissimo are great, as long as you are bit particularly tall.

If someone would like to manufactur clothes for ladies who have big boobs abd are tall, then i’m all back and boobs ears

cece · 26/12/2018 11:17

Can't seem to copy link. Search Mela belted dress on New Look website. It's £28

BusterGonad · 26/12/2018 11:27

I'm tall with slim legs and good bum but a bit of a tummy and big boobs (34FF) I wear a lot of wrap dresses with a vest underneath, t shirt dresses are also nice, and shirt dresses with a vest underneath so I can do a nice v at the front. Fit n flare and skaters are good too as they trim the waist imo. The Tara dress would make me look like a sausage!

ColdCrumpetsandButter · 26/12/2018 11:37

PepperBerry which is part of Bravissimo.

treaclesoda · 26/12/2018 11:46

I'm this shape and weirdly my most flattering dress was a cheap non branded Chinese import thing from eBay that cost about £5. I've had so many compliments when I've worn it. It's sort of T shirt shaped but with a bit of a pleat on either side and pockets (which was the reason I bought it in the first place). Although it was sold as being Jersey cotton and when it arrived it was 100% polyester which I would never have bought by choice. But it's amazing, every time I wear it people think it must be some upmarket make because it's such a good shape.

Anyway, I'd suggest searching in unusual places, you never know what you might find.

PouchofDouglas · 26/12/2018 11:57

No to wrap. A) dated b) make tits look even bigger

whatswithtodaytoday · 26/12/2018 12:05

Wrap dresses don't suit me either, they make me look frumpy and never have enough fabric on the boobs (38FF).

Bravissimo is a good idea - you need to try everything on as they have different fits for different size boobs, but you're more likely to get something that's actually cut to fit your shape.

I love a wrap dress and very big of boob

ittooshallpass · 26/12/2018 17:40

I have big bust 32GG, small waist and bum, but have a mum tum. Wrap dresses are a godsend. Especially the latest ones with ruffle hem skirts. They don't make my bust look bigger, they help me to wear a dress that fits my body and accommodates my bust. With non-wrap dresses I'd have to wear a larger size to cover bust, which then drowns the rest of my body.

BusterGonad · 26/12/2018 18:41

Poucho actually you are wrong, wrap dresses have been very hot for spring summer 2018, I'm not talking Boden wrap dresses, I'm thinking a more more high fashion then that!

PouchofDouglas · 26/12/2018 20:35

I’m not convinced that is what was meant here

BusterGonad · 27/12/2018 01:38

Poucho fair enough. For me they work as with big boobs you need to create a big gap between neck and boobs. The smaller the gap the bigger and saggier your boobs will look. I do wear t shirt dresses with a t shirt neck line but I think I just about get away with it.

Unobtainable · 27/12/2018 01:47

Try looking at Pintrest using ‘Inverted Triangle’ or ‘goblet’ body type. You’ll see the type of dress which is most suited to your body type which is;

  1. either long sleeves, three quarters or sleeveless.
  2. v-neck; square neck; cowl neck
  3. fitted shoulder line
  4. semi-fitted or fitted body
  5. skirt that gently flares out from the waist (to balance shoulders)
  6. Good weight material
BusterGonad · 27/12/2018 02:59

I'm a goblet! Grin
