Facial Electrolysis - how much should it cost and what to look for?

Hi Everyone

I was wondering if anyone could advise how much they are paying for electrolysis?

When I was a teenager I had it for a couple of years on my upper lip and it successfully got rid of the hair (looking back I think I probably had PCOS). Now I am perimenopausal the hair is coming back. I went for an appointment last week at a beautician in Islington (I live in London). It was £129 for the session and from now on will be £77 for each 30 minutes but you have to pay for 12 sessions up front so that is £924! I just can't afford this. The session was really good and having had lots of electrolysis before I could see that the consultant knew what she was doing but I have thought about it and I think it's a bit ridiculous for me to even consider going back at that price - plus I would have to put it on my credit card and I will probably need more than 12 sessions so I am going to be looking at getting myself into debt over it.

I have just rung another salon in Hackney and they said £5 for the consultation then £26 a session (30 minutes) and you can pay for five and get one free. The Hackney salon has good reviews online. But I think it's going to be a bit more rough and ready than the Islington one. I don't care about that as long as they do a good job. Not sure what to do really. I wouldn't over analyse this so much if it wasn't an invasive treatment involving needles. I think it makes a real difference who does it.

Any advice? I can't respond to posts until tomorrow I'm afraid as rest of the family will be back soon and I don't want them to see what I am posting about (I am too proud I know but I just don't want anyone to know about this!!). Thank you!!

Watching with interest. Been having it every fortnight for over 6 months now with no noticeable improvement. Beginning to think it's a con.

Thanks Cooella. Are you having needle electrolysis or is it just one with tweezers? It sounds as though it might be a con?

I could see the difference after even one (expensive) session. It stings like hell and leaves red marks on my face but they went down after about an hour and now there are a couple of minute scabs that are making me look slightly spotty but to an untrained eye you'd never know what it was. I am hoping that there might be some beauticians reading this thread who can advise us both on cost and efficacy!

Colette

Thanks so much. This is really useful. I am going to ring round some more consultants and see what they say. I think I found the most expensive consultant in London and the cheapest! Hopefully with this I will find someone who actually is qualified in what they are doing and runs a clean salon but who doesn't bankrupt me!!! So grateful for this.

And you are right. I could just go for the consultation and then decide both the treatment afterwards. That is a really good idea as I would get an idea of what the salon is really like in the treatment rooms.

Good luck, I used to do this 30 yrs ago ! Now I am checking where to go as I have the hairy chin Grin

Mine charges £1 per minute. Usually a 20 minute session. Needle with bar to hold for current. Excellent results.

Thanks Colette and Ittooshallpass. I have cancelled the expensive treatments and found a reputable salon with normal prices thanks to Colette's link! Good luck!!
