Thank to MN I bought a pair of Merrell Oslo boots, which I loved. They’ve finally given up the ghost and I need a replacement.

I like the Joan of Arctics from Sorel. Does anyone have a pair? What is the sizing like?

I have some though I seldom wear them as it's not been snowy here recently. I bought my regular size (is that any help?)

I bought some a few weeks ago. I bloody love them! I'm in the country so I wear walking boots a lot and I wanted something a bit more stylish but still practical. They fit lovely in my normal size, although I could maybe have gone up half a size as I can't fit thick socks underneath but haven't found I needed to.

spugzbunny · 16/12/2018 21:48

Oh I just checked and I have Joan's not Joan of arctic. They are the less intense version!

thereinmadnesslies · 16/12/2018 21:52

I love mine but I think they are on the smaller side - like PP I can’t get thick socks on as well. They are also really heavy so I find it tiring to walk long distances in them.

SparePantsAndLego · 16/12/2018 22:13

Thank you all so much. I’m normally a 6 but I’ve ordered a 6.5 due to wanting a particular colour sooner rather than later.

I’ve subsequently been concerned my impatience may be have been foolish - but it seems it may have been fortunate!

I’ve seen a few comments mentioning the fact they’re heavy. I’m hoping my dog walks in them will do me even more good if they’re weighty!

They are really popular here in Canada, I have tried them on, I find the lining a little itchy but it's definitely warm. Socks that go right up your calf are probably a good call initially, like ski socks. They are wide at the top so you need to wear leggings, tuck your jeans in or wear snow pants that will go over them. I have also been told they become comfortable but really need breaking in. They seem to be true to size depending on what you wear underneath. I usually go at least half a size up for snow boots and wear calf length socks. Depends on your feet, but Ugg Arondiracks are supposed to be good for narrower feet, try them on, they usually come a few sizes too small for most people, they are also expensive. My North face ones aren't very warm, I wouldn't recommend them but my benchmark was -30 last year. I have Baffin Jess on my Christmas list, but they are heavy, the liner is superb and removable, warmth is more important for me. The proper Arctic ones are good down to -100. Kamik is good too, not sure if they are in the UK. Hope it works out for you, I see them everywhere here so they must do as they say on the tin! Olang is also a really innovative brand if they do them in the uk!

I bought some a couple of years back but they were much heavier than I expected - not like Merrell Oslos at all. I found them really uncomfortable and returned them, got some Merrell Decora Chants instead.

Want2bSupermum · 16/12/2018 22:52

I had them and returned them. They were uncomfortable and I couldn't wait to break them in. I got a pair of Kirkland snow boots for $20 from Costco. They have been great so far. Highly recommend them.

Doublechocolatetiffin · 16/12/2018 22:58

I bought some but had to return them because they were too small. I do have wide feet with high arches but I couldn’t even get them on in my normal size!

SparePantsAndLego · 16/12/2018 23:17

Really helpful, thank you winnerwiner. Clearly UK winters aren’t as cold as yours but I really struggle with cold weather and I love walking my dog, so I need to find a solution.

I have no problem with investing in decent boots...as long as they last. I don’t mind them looking worn but I don’t want cold, wet feet.

I’ll check out those Uggs. I discounted Uggs as style over substance. I had Plumdales which were warm and looked fab but just weren’t hardy enough.

I live in London but we walk in the woods, go to the coast and I’d like boots that keep my feet comfortable.

Wish I could buy another pair of Oslos.

I will check out the Decoras and Kirklands, too. I lived in Docs in my youth so I’m happy to break in boots but not sure I can deal with painful dog walks!

I’d like a pair that will last and last. I looked after them and had my Oslos for 6 years. Not bad going!

Yes, it's only the arondirack versions that I would recommend on the Ugg side of things, as they have a really good sole and rubber up the side, for the UK, dry=warm, the standard Uggs aren't good for that. If Merrells fit you well have you thought about the Aurora Tall ? It looks like a great sole. 6 years is great going, Costco is great for doing good value items like that so well worth a look as others say. Another popular brand here is Pajar, they are available at Blacks.co.uk they only have the Sienna2 but it looks like a really good boot! Good luck. (sadly life is all about sturdy footwear now, looking forward to some snowshoeing though over New year, maybe an icefishing trip too, so it's money well spent).

SparePantsAndLego · 17/12/2018 21:22

Thanks again (very much) winnerwiner. You’ve been really helpful. Especially grateful as clearly the Candian weather clearly means you need more expertise in this area.
I’m off to google and do some more shopping!
