Colours help please

Long and short of it I need help I haven't ever been the most stylish of people but have got to a point I need to get my act together. I finally have nice teeth and hair but I'm at a total loss when it comes to make up.

My previous make up was either black purple or blue lipstick and either purple red or black eyes and lots of eyeliner and mascara, i didn't bother with foundation or blusher. My hair has been multitude of colours until I killed it and ended up in a salon on tears. The very nice stylist saved what he could and after an oplex treatment used a semi perm colour that is a darkish brown colour that looks dark auburn in some lights and I have to say I'm totally in love with it. It's been cut into a bob with some layers in the front.

I have fairly pale skin and blue eyes and my teeth aren't Simon Cowell white but they are white if that makes sence. I'm not sure if it matters but I'm also late 30s.

I haven't had pictures taken with my dc for a long time because I hated the way I looked but this Christmas I plan on taking some and is like to look more put together and make more of an effort.

I don't know if anyone can help with the description I have given or if a pic is needed but could any of you wonderful stylish people out there advise me on colours I'd be very very grateful. Sorry this is long.

Just checking, are the eye and lip colours the right way round?!

longnight · 17/12/2018 22:35

Yes Blush I thought I couldn't wear blue on my eyes so wore it on my lips instead.

Congrats on your 'new look' OP! The best thing to do would be to take yourself off to a department store make up counter. It sounds like you like/did like quite a 'dramatic' look, but maybe wanting to try something a bit more 'mainstream/conservative/subtle' (take your pick!) now? Tell the assistant at the make up counter this. Treat it like a docs appointment, if you know what I mean! I personally like Bare Minerals as it's 'natural' looking and the powder is nice if you don't like the feel of cream foundation. Mac is a bit more 'edgy' in some of its products but if you're moving away from that then that might not work.
Generally I go for colours very similar to my natural complexion (pinky-brown lipsticks for example) so it's an 'enhancing' look rather than making me look totally different. Good luck!!

WineIsMyCarb · 17/12/2018 22:55

Jesus, I'm keen on the 'inverted commas' tonight... 'aren't I'!!?! Hmm

I look into that I have a boots and a Debenhams near me. I've seen the beauty stands but last time I went to one the lady raised her eyebrow at me so I just put my head down and left. I don't think she approved of my baggy jeans and Jack skellington jumper.

And I think subtle is the kind of look I'd like to go for I'm never going to look ultra glam but nicely put together would be very nice Smile

Hi, yes agree go to Debenhams and ask about a natural look - say just the basics so tinted moisturiser maybe rather than foundation if you're not used to wearing it, a decent mascara, a blusher and an everyday lipstick. The consultant should be able to determine if you're cool toned ( so pinky / purple colours) or warm ( so corals / browns). If you're happy and can get these you can experiment with bolder colours of the same tone from the high street, Superdrug have loads! Then you could look at Pinterest and you tube for looks and lessons eg how to do make up for hooded eyes ( that's me!)

longnight · 18/12/2018 22:19

Thank you so much I'm going into city center tomorrow so will head to Debenhams Smile .

Could I also ask I have a navy dress that I plan on wearing at Christmas would I wear black shoes or another colour and what colour tights should I wear? I have scars on my legs so I'm not comfortable having bare legs.

Navy is a great choice as so many colours go with it. SmileIf you want to wear nude tights or black opaques, 40 denier then that's fine. No sandals with tights!
Silver & gold are Christmassy / party
red & orange are eye catching
navy & black are safe
Wear heels only as high as you are comfortable in, imo nothing stylish about not being able to walk properly due to skyscrapers!

Thank you so so much Smile this is the first time I've actually been excited to dress up and I'm having my first pictures taken with my youngest. I've taken loads of her but never with her because I've hated the way I look.

Can I point you to the 'Styled by Suzie' FB page? She's lovely and gives loads of hints on how to develop your own style. She does personal shops and style analysis, but you can join the group without buying any of these services. I had a style analysis and its made clothes shopping a joy! Good luck OP and enjoy dressing up!

Deathraystare · 20/12/2018 07:45

If you still have a love of the dramatic but just want to tone it down a bit maybe go to Urban Decay or Mac. Otherwise somewhere like Bobbie Brown or Laura Mercier. Or Maybe Benefit if you want some 'fun' products. Don't be too ready to 'embrace the beige' if you still like a bit of drama. Not everyone needs to retire behind a wall of beige. I don't! You might find that a cheery or bright lipstick is all that is needed to brighten things up.

longnight · 20/12/2018 20:46

Thank you for the suggestions Smile
I have a bare minerals powder concealer and something called veil I was given 01 I think the number is. And a pinkish blusher blusher a Smokey pallette and a pinkish lipstick. QI followed how I was shown and I didn't think it looked bad at all I managed to blend it but I saw my ex and he told me I looked like coco the clown so not sure if I should give up the make up all together. It's left me feeling a bit shit and like what's the point Sad

CollyWombles · 20/12/2018 21:26

Well your ex is hardly going to be nice is he! Sounds like sour grapes to me. Don't you give up on makeup because of him. He's an ex for a reason right?

I have been in the same boat, got a thread on here too where the lovely ladies have helped me with makeup. In my early twenties I was very goth as such, into dark eyes, dark lipstick and so forth. Now in mid thirties I want to look sophisticated!

You should have seen me earlier, sat staring at highlighting powder, wondering what exactly I was going to do with it! Or even in the shop actually, staring at the masses of makeup choice and wondering what the heck 'primer' was. A quick Google and a step by step picture guide and off I went, with the highlighting powder. Practice makes perfect!

You have this OP! And if you want a real opinion of your makeup, stick a photo up here! Never mind your nasty ex.

longnight · 20/12/2018 21:40

Thanks colly Smile you are right.
Highlighter Shock I haven't even looked at that yet saw a highlighting and contour video on YouTube and it looked so complicated.
I will try and stick a photo up either tomorrow or Saturday then my technique can be critiqued. Smile.

OP posts:
CollyWombles · 20/12/2018 21:58

Constructive criticism! I am going to post a picture of my attempt with makeup tomorrow, technique can only improve!

longnight · 20/12/2018 22:31

I'll look put for it Smile I may get some inspiration.
