Beautician told me that retinol will thin my skin?

I’m 34 and have been using retinol products for ages. I recently went for a facial and the beauty therapist told me that retinol should only be used as a one off treatment every few months as it’ll thin my skin causing premature aging... is this true?

I’ve also been using the Ordinarys peeling solution twice per week - will this have the same effect?

I’m feeling I should leave both products alone now and just nourish my skin for a while but I’m not sure what products to use?

Gosh, I hope not! I use it daily.

If it’s helpful, I’m told I look very young for my age, frequently.

Absolute nonsense, and this is a field I oncep trained in.

The epidermis (outer layer of skin) will be "thinned" in that you will remove a layer of dead skin with retinol.

Just like traditional exfoliation with a grain, or scratching/shaving your skin.

The epidermis constantly replenishes with new cells, all you are doing is aiding the cell turnover.

Is she getting it mixed up with steroid cream?

Worieddd · 15/12/2018 20:25

She’s chatting shit

ethelfleda · 15/12/2018 20:28

Haha thanks!
No, she definitely said retinol and was suggesting other ‘more targeted’ uses for it instead.
She said it would make my skin become more sundamaged too - even if I use sun cream?

The thinning is a crock of shit, but you must use a high SPF in the day, that is true.

Stripybeachbag · 15/12/2018 20:33

From what I understand, you must use suncream otherwise the sun will basically undo the anti-aging effects of the retinol.

Biologifemini · 16/12/2018 07:21

It exfoliates so I guess she meant that.
Having said that retinol exposes your skin so you really have to be vigilant about spf.
I think retinol prompted red capillaries to be exposed so I no longer use it.

She's talking out of her ass. It's the only one that's scientifically proven to prevent aging. It increases cell turnover in the epidermis (which she misunderstood) but stimulates collagen production in the dermis.
