Have you fake tanned your legs? How?

And do they look natural?
Due to lack of sun and covering up my legs are as white as driven snow. Need to be "tanned".
Never done fake tan - should I go to salon or DIY. So many products, so confusing.
Anyone had a good fake leg tan and how?

I tried the other day, to practice for my wedding, not as I want to be brown, but to even up my skin tone a little, blend in strap marks.

It was streaky, I am not going to bother! (I used L'oreal non-streak!)

yes - st tropez mousse. Pricey but worth it.

Olay Everyday Body one is excellent.I have whiter than white legs and this one is really natural. The johnsons one is too orange for me.
Be careful with the ankle and knee area, exfoliate first and wipe excess cream off those bits.

NatalieJane · 25/06/2007 11:40

I have been using st tropez everyday stuff for the past couple of weeks, it has taken the two weeks but I am a very lovely natural looking brown all over now.

It has taken the couple of weeks to even out everywhere, I had very brown arms and white legs and belly for a few days then the other way round but over the last few days it has evened out nicely.

Hathor · 25/06/2007 12:08

Oh so does it build up gradually? I thought I could do it one day then go out in my summer dress the next.
If I go to a salon will it be ready to show that day or do you have to go back for more coats of tan?

You can get ones that is a once only application, but in my (very limeted) experiance, especially if you are quite pale anyway, the ones that build up look much more natural.

Hathor · 25/06/2007 12:28

Thanks for the advice NJ, and everyone. Anyone been to a salon?

I find two applications of mousse gives me a nice colour, and it is natural looking. Have had a spray tan once, and it washed off within a couple of days, I was not impressed. Was a nice colour though, ideal if for a one off event.

nailpolish · 25/06/2007 13:39

you can get 2 types of salon tan - spray and fake bake (lotion)

depends on which colour you wnat - i prefer the spray personally and its quicker and easier

costs vary, can be £30, lasts about 7 days, only one application required

i would thoroughly recommend a spray tan, fabulous fabulous, fabulous!!!

Think I will treat myself to the salon one, as not confident about DIY.
How do you know what colour to ask for, or is there a kind of paint chart with shades of magnolia/hint of tint, etc?
Getting excited about it now!

i think the beautican will just ask you what 'depth' you wold liek, pale, medium, dark, nothing too complicated

you can either wear an old pair of your own pants (they may get stained) or the salon will give you paper disposible ones

when you phone just ask "do you ahve disposible pants or do i wear my own?"
also, if you can handle it, dont wear a bra cos when you put it back on it may get stained. or at least wear an old one. you may also get marks where the straps are if the tan hasnt dried properly

and dont be embarrassed, shes probably done it hundreds of times and seen it all

have fun!!!

I am totally pale and have see through skin I am sure of it. So always fake my leg tan. Make sure you exfoliate properly first, and moisturise well too. I often mix the fake tan in with a moisturiser and build it up gradually so I dont suddenly have different coloured legs from the day before. Johnsons Holiday Sun product is really good. But make sure you wash your hands afterwards. And dont wear white straight away after either.

chopster · 25/06/2007 13:48

I had a mobile tanning service - that was ace, cud sit around in my dressing gown afterwards so I didnt have to worry about marks. She came with a pop up tent for me to stand in. Worth looking for.

nailpolish · 25/06/2007 13:49

chopster that sounds brilliant

curiouscat · 25/06/2007 13:53

The Boots own brand 'Holiday Skin' cream works for me. It feels and looks like a white moisturiser. Reasonable price, under £10 anyway. I put it on my legs in the morning before breakfast and evening. Gentle colour forms over a week or more. Nothing obvious but takes away that pasty winter look. But you have to let it dry before getting dressed.

I have had a St Tropez done at a salon which was cream, it was more intense the next day. I couldnt do anything for hours after having it done though as you have to wait few hours for it to work then shower/bath etc. It faded after about 5 days or so too. The real big problem I found with it was that it blocked my pores under my arms in some way as, as soon as I had showered & put on deodorant I began to smell of sweat straight away! Bizzare I know.

I tend to use Avons 'skin so soft-satin Glow, which is a moisturiser & slow build up tan. They do it in a fair skin & medium skin tone, which is good. Im a big believer in alot of them work due to how they are applicated. Exfoliating is a must & I use latex gloves too to prevent staining to hands.
I also use something else by Avon which is called Cellu-sculpt leg perfector, which is an instant tint to make you look like your wearing tights & then it gradually builds up if you use it daily. You can use it on arms too.

I have a mild dose of Slapped Cheek virus at the moment, which gives a lovely tanned effect

if a little itchy........
