Do I attempt a box dye?? If so which one?!

Hi all!

So basically I have been getting my hair coloured at the hairdressers for 4+ years. I have found myself a bit short on funds this month and I’m considering DIY rather than spending £70-100.

My hairdressers use Aveda products which I’ve always found really good.

I’m brunette but (at 27!) have some sparkly white hairs.

So do I wait it out and just look a bit disheveled for a few months or get myself a dye kit?? I have a baby and have ‘Mum hair’ right now... but I need to feel good about myself.

Advice please!!

I stopped going to hairdressers for dye when these came out, so easy to use, hair doesnt go dry and comes with nice conditioning treatment.

Josh Wood ones are good, and cruelty free. They do run quite dark in the brunette shades though, so go a shade or two lighter than you need. They also do toners that you can add to warm/cool the colour, either at the time of dying or as a between dyes gloss.

Thank you I will have a look! Might pop into superdrug today.

The problem I always had before when I used them was it would go a lot darker- so wouldn’t suit me and then over a few weeks the colour would wash out and be uneven. Sad

Try using one of the Josh Wood colour shots & conditioner before actively colouring your hair. I recently discovered that I’ve effectively been dying my hair to keep the dye the right colour rather than to stop greys showing (I missed some appointments) and have far less grey than I thought.

What colour is your hair now- level 6? What tone does the hair have? Can you photograph it?

I would advise using the professional dye Majirel at home. It is really easy to do, the dye is thicker so application a doddle and the grey coverage excellent. You use a higher level developer than box dyes so you get a longer lasting more reliable result. Then when it comes to refreshing you can mix up only what you need so it is very cost effective.

Loads of threads on here as to how mix it up as well but happy to go over it.

I’ve got really dark brown hair and I use what they call a “mid brown” shade 4.

Their dark and mid blonde colours are effectively brown, maybe try one of those?

I love the Olia range. Very easy to use and the colours are awesome. Have been blonde, red, brown and violet. And now just go hairdressers for a trim or re-style.

This was me a couple of months ago. I went for Loreal Preference, it comes with extra conditioner and a colour booster. I was really happy with the results. In fact another box is on my 'to buy' list for today!

I'm brunette. I find it's best to go for shade or 2 lighter than your actual colour.

I use the loreal one with the colour booster. It's basically a toner/temporary colour wash you can put through your hair to keep the colour from fading.

I am going very grey though and do wonder if I'm fighting a losing battle.

Don't bother with box dyes - try majirel and mix with a creme peroxide. You can buy online.

Lots of threads on here about it.

Long lasting, easy to apply and more cost effective than box dyes as you only need to mix up what you need if you want to touch up smaller bits in-between doing full roots.

If you're dark brown I'd recommend a 5 in majirel. Any less and it'll be too dark.
