If you're not used to wearing bright or red lipsticks, you will likely find that they just look too severe on you. It's a matter of getting used to it.
Wearing the lipstick as a stain (with or without a balm) will make it feel less severe, and you can always apply more should you want to.
However, generally, I find that if your skin has a warm/yellow undertone, then warmer reds will look more in sync with your skin, and blue toned reds will look more like a statement.
If your skintone is cool/blue-toned, then cool/blue toned reds will look more in sync, and warmer reds will look more like a statement lip.
Mac Retro Matte lipsticks are very drying - Ruby Woo is famous for being incredibly drying, so that's worth keeping in mind too.
I was recommended Russian Red by the staff in Mac as it is less drying.
I'd suggest Mac Lady Bug, Mac Red, Mac Ruby Woo and Mac Russian Red.
Mac Lady Danger may also be an option for you - I find it is quite orange (but very nice) on me, but I've seen it look quite red (and gorgeous) on other people.
