I just threw away my clothes...

And by threw away, I of course mean donated.

Had a major clear out... got rid of all the clothes I've bought purely because they were on sale, all the stuff I've held on to for 5 years in the hope I'd one day fit into them and all the stuff I've kept 'just because'.

I will no longer buy cheap quality clothes just because of the price tag. I have a habit of buying them even though they don't suit me etc etc. They then just sit in my wardrobe for eternity while I wear the same few items on rotation.

I will now endeavour to buy fewer, but pricier and better quality clothes.

So, gurus of style & beauty, where the hell do I shop?

I like Cos - good quality, well made, natural fibres. Toast in sales.
Congratulations!

We need to know approx age and style to advise properly. Good for you though. I'm impressed.

Go to Milan on a shopping trip (assuming you're not on the breadline). 1 - 2k should get you well togged out in coat, skirts, trousers, shirts, jackets etc. The quality in Italy is second to none and they will last a couple of years.

If you like online shopping, try cocosa.co.uk or brandalley.co.uk.

Thanks both! I feel much better for it... you know when you feel claustrophobic because you've got too much crap? Well it's all gone now, the whole house has been blitzed, I was brutal 😬

How to describe my style... in a bit of a rut really. Mainly skinny jeans with loose shirts/jumpers.
Atm I'm kind of apple shaped. Unfortunately.
I have outrageously big boobs, slim legs but quite a bit of gut thanks to 2 c sections. I'm 30.

@Thedukes I'm not exactly on the breadline but I think an impromptu trip to Milan would be rather pushing it 😆

I’ve been doing the same over the last year or so. I second Toast in the sale. I also like whistles and COS. I guess it depends on your style really. Abthropologie in the sale is also great. I probably spend less not buying crappy stuff because the price is an easy spend, I have less but more I love and wear.

I have also knitted myself two lovely jumpers which I wear loads and have another one the go. Not a cheap option - one cost me at least £80 in lovely Shetland wool - but they’ll last a lifetime if looked after.

I'm similar to you op, started last night with 2 suitcases loads to the charity shop.
I'm buying: Whistles, Cos, Jigsaw, Jaeger (I'm older than you) All Saints etc....but mostly in sales.

Sounds like your figure would suit a slightly blousy top, with elastic round the bottom, so it shows off your legs, and skims over the tummy area. Nice, but not tight tops, that I would describe as smart casual...Postcards from Brighton. A couple of our local boutiques do it, but I think they have a website. I wear a bit of the Italian linen stuff, not exactly a shirt, but loose semi-structured tops.

Well made clothes should last much longer than a couple of years.

Sarcelle · 10/12/2018 19:27

I so want to do this but lack the courage!

XingMing · 10/12/2018 20:20

I think thedukes is right in suggesting that a capsule of good, well made clothes will please you for a couple of years. They will last rather longer than that if you look after them, but won't be as fashionable from then on because the details that make you choose MaxMara over M&S will have shifted, perhaps subtly but perceptibly.

I tend to skate between the rims so choose boring safe classics for cashmere jumpers and perfectly fitted jeans (whichever style suits) and wear them out, then replace with an updated version.

Coats and jackets I keep forever (as long as I have space) and accessories add the fashion edge. Some I keep forever (you are never too fat to enjoy a luscious silk velvet scarf, and it will be warm and glamorous when you're 80, if your granddaughters haven't begged it off you) and some are purely for a season or two (hello faux fur bag, which has come back around from being DS's favourite stroke... he's nearly 20). But a lot has come and gone between then and now.
