Any home hair-highlights success stories, or you always go to the hairdresser

It's that really.

I always go to the hairdresser but wondering if I should give it a go myself?
I don't have a clue about home hair dyes, any tips/ must haves or avoids?

I never done it myself despite highlighting my hair for years (had a Saturday job at local saloon, went to training sessions as a student, cheap home hair workers, until I could afford it myself.
But, if I can avoid spending £80 at this moment in time I would, I really would.
What do you do, does it work and could any amateur me pull it off?

Oh, if it helps I need blonde half head highlights to help cover bit of grey (not ready to embrace full grey hair look) and to cheer me up for a few parties and performances

I always go to a hairdresser. After a few hair disasters as a teen / at uni I just wouldn't risk doing my own highlights now. I think it's one of those things that money should be spent on. I'd rather have professionally done hair than new outfits / new shoes / make up etc. You have to wear your hair every day! Everything will look better if your hair is looking good Smile.

Always go to the hairdresser
I’ve tried it many times at home. Always awful. Especially blonde highlights. You need someone who knows what they’re doing and can see the back of your head!

I have a hair dresser come to my home. It’s soooo much cheaper than the salon, and just as good!

Ah, as I feared

You're right you're right you're right

I had brilliant hairdresser but was stuck in a rut I thought. I tried Japanese saloon but he was a cold fish and had no new ideas really. When he charged me for a blow dry after highlights only, sending the bill £35 over what I expected I said that was it.
Found a new one but in different town so not handy

Where did you find your mobile hairdresser Ollhe? (how do you say your name?) Pot luck did a friend recommend? Cash careful this Christmas.

Probably too late to even get an appointment before the parties start

you're right 90mamasophie! everything looks a bit grey at the moment hence my mini-panic and almost desperate measures

Thanks for saving me from myself Xmas Wink

Haha! Coincidentally I also use a mobile hairdresser. She's worked in top salons but since having a child freelance type work is better. Found her on instagram, loved her work and got in touch. Also checked recommendations and heard her name mentioned on a popular mums Facebook group.
Good luck and hope you find someone fab.

I do mine at home as I reckoned I could do as good a job as my hairdresser. I can place the highlights exactly where I want them and I’m pretty chuffed with the results.
However mine are more balayage/ombré which is easier as you don’t need to place them close to the roots (the heat from your head can speed up the lightening process leading to unevenness).
I use a 20% developer which is low and therefore really slow. I leave the prodton my hair for about 45 minutes to an hour, which gives a subtle lightening, and not much chance of going horribly wrong.
YouTube videos are your friend. Tanita Taylor does a really good job of explaining the of the kind of thing I do. I don’t use a whole packet each time either, so costs me about £3 a go!

princesstiasmum · 09/12/2018 09:34

I have always done my own, apart from the very first time and always turns out well, i now have a lot of silver in my own hair,so i uses a dark blonde on roots and cap highlights , difficult to do the back but after putting some through a cap i check the back with a mirror
I wont pay £65 as some haiordressers charge , cant afford it anyway
Costs me about a fiver

dementedpixie · 09/12/2018 09:35

I would do an all over colour myself but not highlights

newyeardelurker · 09/12/2018 10:05

I use an all over blonde (olia) to cover grey. Have never had any issues. Highlights I wouldn't try but I'm happy with the variation in colour I get as some of the remaining dark hair doesn't take. Probably sounds awful but it looks good, honest!

Biologifemini · 09/12/2018 10:16

I do it. Balayage style.
I get it done professionally once a year and then use the John Frieda spray bleach to highlight. I find it is really mild and works well but I have to do it 4-5 times and it is easy. But my base colour is 6A so it takes well and I don’t have any red undertones.
