How much do you pay your mobile hairdresser?

I'm having trouble getting new clients. As soon as I mention my prices, they vanish into the nether never to be heard from again. One woman even went so far as to block me after replying she would just leave it. I only wanted to reply 'no problem. Sorry, I couldn't help more.' when I refused to put bleach on her hair and leave it in for her to wash off herself.

My prices are £20 for a full head colour (inc quick blowdry)
£30 for a full head colour, cut and blow dry.
£30 for full head foil highlights or balayage inc blow dry or £35 inc cut
£25 for half head highlights.
£7.50 to add Olaplex.

I bring my own shampoo, conditioner, styling tools, towels and products. I don't use cheap shit I use branded, quality products. If my prices were any lower I would be paying towards my client's hair which I'm not willing to do.

Do you think it could be because your prices are too low?! That may sound strange but people may think there is a reason your prices are perhaps less than standard. Which area do you work in? My mobile hairdresser is £40 for a cut and blowdry and I think she charges over £100 for colour. She charges a lot less than local salons, I'm in Hertfordshire. Your prices seem too inexpensive!

LizzieSiddal · 06/12/2018 16:29

Gosh that’s very cheap! I agree with Pebble.

Mine charged £60 for hair colour and cut and blow dry. I went else where after a few sessions as she kept forgetting things and I had to provide them, so would rather go to a hairdressers shop. I’m in the south too, but an hour and half from London.

Frequency · 06/12/2018 16:31

The few who reply after my initial price try to haggle me down, so I don't think I'm too cheap. Unless, I'm supposed to price higher and then let people haggle?

Confused

I'm in the northest-eastest part of the NE. No-one would pay £100 for a colour. The salon I work in on weekend charges £45 for a colour, cut and blow-dry. My prices were introductory. Once I built up a good client base I planned to gradually raise them more in line with what the salons charge.

I clearly need to move!

Maybe you could give people an introductory offer price for just their first session then go back to your regular pricing once you have them as a client?

Amaaboutthis · 06/12/2018 17:35

You are too cheap. I pay £64 for tint and blow dry.

fadingfast · 06/12/2018 17:52

I'm in East Anglia. My hairdresser charged me £37 for a cut and blow dry for me and a cut for my teenage son. I wash my own hair using my own shampoo but she provides everything else.
For a full set of foils, cut and blow dry for me, plus a cut for my son I think she usually charges around £75.

Cabochard · 06/12/2018 17:52

Your prices are similar to some mobile hairdressers here in the West Country. Still on the lower end though...
Are you quite young: do you think people are trying to take advantage?
I wish you lived closer to here... Grin

Whompthatwillow · 06/12/2018 18:23

I pay £80 cut and colour. Any less and I would be suspicious of quality.

M0nstermunch · 06/12/2018 18:36

I'm in Yorkshire, mine is £40 for a cut and colour. Think that's about the going rate for mobile.

Ellapaella · 06/12/2018 18:53

I'm in the North East OP (Newcastle) and pay my mobile hairdresser £35 for a half head highlights, she charges £20 for a wet cut and blow dry. For colour and cut I usually end up paying about £55. I tip her quite generously on top of that.
My local salon charges £70 for a half head highlights and a cut so it's about £15 cheaper to have it done at home.

FlyingUnicorn1 · 06/12/2018 18:59

£40 cut, colour, blow dry and straighten. Cambridgeshire

miri1985 · 06/12/2018 19:05

Do you have your prices listed anywhere or do people always have to ask? I hate asking the price of something on the phone or even via email (especially if its quite local) so would be more likely to go with someone who had their prices clearly listed somewhere without me having to ask.

Frequency · 06/12/2018 20:14

My prices are listed on my Facebook page, on my website and on flyers I leave in shops, so I'm not sure why people are even asking my prices other than to try to barter me down.

I'm not very young but I do specialise in creative colour, so perhaps people think I am or maybe my prices simply attract chancers. I might have to think about raising them sooner than i planned.

I pay £45 for a full head of bleach followed by full head of toner. I buy the hair dye boxes myself and my mobile hairdresser provides the bleach. She uses whatever shampoo I have in the bathroom. Been my hairdresser since I was 10!

Fannyfanakerpants · 06/12/2018 20:20

SE here. I pay just under £20 For my cut and blow dry (wash my hair myself) and about £40 For half head of foils /£55 full head.
That's about half of what it would cost for a salon in this area. I have to prebook at least 6 weeks before as she's so busy, she works around her kids school hours and I know she's a higher rate tax payer as we've discussed tax returns so she obviously does very well for herself.

OhFlipMama · 06/12/2018 20:21

£25 for two adults and two children.

OhFlipMama · 06/12/2018 20:22

Sorry, that's for cuts.

OhFlipMama · 06/12/2018 20:23

I think she charges about £45 for foil colour.

wizzywig · 06/12/2018 20:25

I use a mobile hairdresser for my kids. She charges salon prices; £8 per child

stoplickingthetelly · 06/12/2018 20:47

Sounds very cheap to me. I really don't think you could lower your prices more. I pay £70 in a salon for cut and all over colour (dark brown). Nothing fancy. I would happily pay at least £50 for a mobile hairdresser probably a bit more. Maybe there just isn't a big client base in your area?

BurpAndRustle · 06/12/2018 22:23

I think you should pop your prices up a wee bit. Cheap prices attract cheap people, who will want to haggle more. A decent price attracts people who don’t mind paying for quality. So up them 10-15% and see what happens.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 06/12/2018 22:35

Half head highlights and cut. No blow dry. £40

TrickyKid · 06/12/2018 22:37

Those are very low prices. I wouldn't book you because I'd be worried you were no good.

Justkeeprollingalong · 06/12/2018 22:46

I'm in Cornwall and pay £25 for a cut and quick blow dry (short hair). Your prices are very reasonable.

PinkBuffalo · 06/12/2018 23:01

I have very short hair which I have cut every six weeks (only a cut, nothing else)
He charges me £10. I find it very useful to have someone come to me as I get it done after work. I also book six weeks in advance.
