To Fringe or Not to Fringe?

Please give me your own pros and cons of getting a fringe cut in.

My hair is currently sitting nicely on my shoulders (longer if i straighten it , am quite lazy). Grown out over the past two years from a pixie cut. But I'm bored.

I seem to have a lot of hair. I go to the gym almost daily so do wash my hair frequently. I figured that if I get a fringe cut in then here will be less hair to have to comb through and dry off.

The downside is that my hair can be wavy so I would need to style a fringe and not just leave it to dry.

Mid brown, a few greys ( I tend to use a cheap box colour to disguise those). I'm 50 - face isn't particularly round or long.

I'm not sure having a fringe will make much difference to your routine, it won't take up that much hair. In fact, sounds like it will add to your routine if you need to spend time styling it.

Having said that, I always have a fringe! (also in 50s)

BellyDancer124 · 05/12/2018 22:34

Don’t do it.. it’s extra work (gets greasy quicker, grows fast so constant trims) the best thing I ever did was grow mine out! However I do think they’re very pretty, I just can’t be bothered with one anymore! Smile

DontCallMeCharlotte · 06/12/2018 08:08

Ooh I disagree - the fringe is the easiest bit about styling my hair and doesn't get greasy quicker, unless you're a run your fingers through it kind of girl I suppose...

DeadBod · 06/12/2018 08:13

I'm also having this dilemma, but

  • needs trimming regularly.
  • will constantly look messy at the gym as you get sweaty.
  • requires more styling and faffing to keep straight.
Having said all that, it's easy to grow out if you decide that you don't like it. Go for it.

It has just taken me a year to grow out my fringe fully. I liked it but I have a natural wave in my hair and it was a daily battle to keep it straight, plus it needed to be trimmed every 2-3 weeks. A longer, side swept fringe is lower maintenance, maybe try that first?

DontCallMeCharlotte · 06/12/2018 10:22

Having had a fringe for my whole life, I got my hairdresser to teach me how to trim it myself in between cuts (my hair grows annoyingly quickly).

To be fair, I have no wave, or even bend, in my hair so it really is low maintenance for me and it's not a heavy fringe.

foxtiger · 06/12/2018 15:37

Why do you want your fringe to be straight if the rest of your hair is wavy? Just let it be wavy, it'll look much more natural.

NoWayNoHow · 06/12/2018 16:43

I've actually told DH that if I ever talk about getting a fringe again (have had one maybe half a dozen times) that he needs to remind me of the bitching and moaning I do when I don't want it any more.

I find it hard work to style (mainly because my hair normally air dries), plus it thins at the roots over a few months because of all the styling. Then there's the growing out which inevitably involves me looking like the village idiot for a good 6-9 months.

Don't do it!

Okay I admit defeat! To be honest, if I suited not having one, I probably wouldn't have one either.

Annasgirl · 06/12/2018 19:38

Have had them on and off and my problem is my hair has a kink so the fringe is always a bit "far away" from my forehead (looks like it has been dried with a large round brush even though it hasn't) and in photos I look a bit daft, but IRL I always think I look fab. Looking at the photos though convinced me that despite my very bad lines, a fringe is not for me.

BurpAndRustle · 06/12/2018 22:38

Fringe is more work not less usually. It’s one of those things that’s worth it if it really suits you.

strawberryalarmclock · 06/12/2018 22:44

Dh always knows when strictly has started as we immediately hit my annual 'ooo shall I have a fringe' month!
I've had fringes, I amazingly don't look like Claudia and then spend months regretting it.
I'm resisting this year!!

legolimb · 07/12/2018 09:36

UGh... divided opinion I see. This is why I can't make up my mind.

I think I would have to clip it back for the gym. Currently I can just about tie it all up but looks like a straggly mess five minutes in.

I want to look like this model. Grin

I have a fringe and have always cut it myself. Love it .

Ragevibration · 07/12/2018 11:25

I've got a really blunt fringe and have had for 17 years. It's my "thing" I suppose. It suits me, and I look like a moon when I pin it back.

It's great when it plays ball but when it has days where it won't sit, or gets too long I want to shave my head. My days happiness depends on how my fringe will style that day

legolimb · 07/12/2018 11:35

hmmm..

I have a hair appointment next week so will mull it over.

I have the hairstyle in your picture!
I’ve got very wavy hair- l just make sure it isn’t too short and style it before the rest of my hair ( l straighten and re/style that)
If you can’t style it straight away, just comb it through.
I use a hairdryer, then a hot brush. I wash my hair twice a week - but do my fringe every other ( kind of) or l use a good quality dry shampoo / then style again! 🙂

legolimb · 07/12/2018 15:35

Ah nice to hear that it works for you.

My hair is not straight but does have some wave.

I just feel ready for a change.

shecamefromgreece · 07/12/2018 20:08

I have wavy hair which I sometimes straighten or sometimes have wavy.
I've recently had a fringe put in and although it looks great when I've just blown it, if it's rainy, damp, cold or foggy I'm stuffed. It jumps half way up my forehead and kinks and just generally looks crap.
As I live in Manchester that is pretty much every day then...Grin

Zuma76 · 07/12/2018 20:12

Arghh I’ve seen that model in the hush brochure and have been thinking about a fringe ever since. Unfortunately, I don’t think a fringe will make me look like that!

Athena51 · 07/12/2018 21:00

This the haircut that I've shown to my hairdresser too Smile I love it. I have thick, wavy hair and I don't have a fringe at the moment but I've had one in the past and I know they suit me.

It's a lovely style isn't it?

fringegrin45 · 07/12/2018 22:18

I just clip my fringe up with a twist in a sort of quiff for the gym
