Knee coverage + glamour... is it possible??

I want to buy a nice dress for Christmas and New Year parties but I hate my knees (I mean, they do an ok job of facilitating walking and so on, but they're hideous to look at). Everything I've seen in the shops has been too short. What I'm after is something that ends just below the knee, but only just. I don't want mid-calf as that isn't flattering on me. Any of you style mavens spotted anything suitable? Any colour except black, for preference, although if black is all that there is, I'll take it...

Vivienne of Holloway
Lady v
Pretty kitty

All 50s inspired but will be knee length/ below.

Thanks. They're lovely but I'm also flat as the fens on top and that 50s style doesn't really work on me. I end up with a sad, empty bodice - not very festive!

Does it have to be a dress? I was at a party this weekend with a woman wearing a gorgeous swishy gold skirt just covering the knee and a black jumper on top - she told me she'd worn the same thing with a strappy black camisole to another function.

I think it was this one, or very similar: https://www.marksandspencer.com/pleated-midi-skirt/p/p60199873?extid=psgglplaaWomen1343583060054232712539&skwcid=AL!2750!3!262241066632!!!g!383059789091!EFKW&device=m&cvosrc=ppc%20shopping.google.Women%20%3E%20Clothing%20%3E%20Skirts%20%3E%20Work%20Skirts&cvoopid=54232712539&gclsrc=aw.ds&&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIoqnF3bqE3wIVy7vtCh3EMglpEAQYASABEgKDHvDBwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&pdpredirect

No, a skirt would be fine - was she quite tall, though as that looks like it would be longer than I'd want?

Everything at whistles is midi now!

Billie&Blossom dresses from Dorothy Perkins are just below knee length on me (5' 4")

bookgirl1982 · 04/12/2018 18:22

Lots of midi dresses about this season - Hobbs and Boden had some nice ones.

Ellapaella · 04/12/2018 18:23

A lovely metallic pleated midi skirt with a cami top.

Sadik · 04/12/2018 18:25

What about a jumpsuit? Lots of v. glamorous ones around

MoltonSilver · 04/12/2018 18:30

If you see something you love perhaps having it altered is the answer. You can usually get at least another inch in a cheap brand or more in a better quality brand by having a false hem added.

MoltonSilver · 04/12/2018 18:31

What's your budget?

GraceMarks · 04/12/2018 18:45

Thanks everyone - I will check out all the options that have been mentioned. And I'll bear in mind the possibility of getting alterations done. Tbh I didn't even think of that.

Yes, alterations are the thing. Best to aim to have something taken up rather than down (or taken in rather than out) though. It's usually an easier job so cheaper to have done.

GraceMarks · 04/12/2018 20:01

Yep. I am a good enough seamstress to take things up/in myself but would have to go to an alteration service to have anything let down/out.
