If you are basically a flat chest rectangle shape what do you do?

I am 51 basically have no shape, straight up and down, slim, small bust, long legs. I have no idea really what would suit me or make me look more 'feminine'.
Can i ask what other similar framed women do?

I'm
It the same shape as you but I would say wear a long fitted top with a wide belt pulled in tongivw uou a waist and a padded bra to give you a bosom.

TroyKing · 03/12/2018 17:58

I'm not

LoveBeingAMum555 · 03/12/2018 21:00

I am the same, people think its easy when you are a size 8 but I have no boobs, no bum, no waist. I steer clear of anything loose or floaty which always looks awful. Also round necks or polo necks work better than v necks on me.

I am far better in fitted clothes, I wear skirts a lot (loving the Boden Dorchester skirt this winter with thick tights and ankle boots). Wide legged trousers seem to work quite well with a fitted jumper.

Asda do an add a size bra which gives you more shape for nights out but I find them a bit uncomfortable to wear everyday. A good lightly padded bra that fits properly helps to give a bit of shape though.

I do know what you mean about trying to look feminine and I think it can be more tricky when you get older. I feel like I need to make more of an effort with hair, makeup and accessories than I used to do.

SandraTheBee · 03/12/2018 21:21

Thankyou for your thoughts.
It’s true that it’s harder now that i’m Older. I basically don’t know what I should wear. The stuff I like is for younger things.

Hi OP, you are me, except I have shorter legs.
Slim-fitted is your friend. Nothing baggy, nothing skin-tight
Slash neck fitted tops (no v-necks, ever) in plain colours. Polo necks. Cowl necks.
A-line skirts (though I do have like a pencil skirt if patterned)
Tailored trousers and silk shirts (I kid myself I can look Parisian)
If I wear skinny jeans I am careful just to wear an only very slightly loose-fitting jumper or similar on top. Nothing thick or baggy else I look rectangular.

Yes totally agree about more fitted clothes. I love wearing skirts in winter with a fitted jumper and black tights with ankle boots, or a long sleeved dress. I’ve just got this one and love wearing it

Skinny jeans and fitted jumpers too. I find winter dressing much easier than summer!

SandraTheBee · 04/12/2018 08:38

Thank you!
I’m not really a skirt person, but maybe I could have a look around. I’d better be ruthless with my baggy jumpers then. Jumpers that are really quite fitted seem to make me look worse. So a balance to be struck.
No wonder I hate the way I look in v necks- they make me look like a man- I couldn’t work out why. Cowl neck, polo neck- ok!

I have similar issue to you. Good ideas above, the key is to create the illusion, there is a narrower part of the body , even if is minimal , maybe there is your waist and try to accentuate that.
Wide trousers work well on me, belt and a blouse or top with a bit of frills on shoulder or front .
My skinny jeans are not super skinny, just slim fit and like above something on top with a feminine shape.
Skirts are also great, wide, belt and tucked in top .
Here some pics to give you ideas, try the shapes in dress down or up variations too.
Also here is a link with some ideas

Finally, could you go to a John Lewis and get a personal stylist? You do not have to necessarily buy but they can help you and what colours suit you best.

And final ,final make sure you wear make up (if you like wearing) even a very natural base and mascara , a good hair cut . You will look great!

More pics

Note that the Woolly jumper is not too baggy and sits on the waist , so gives that illusion .

I'm basically the same shape as you. I look nice in skinny jeans or wide legged trousers but straight leg jeans just accentuate the 'straightness' of my body! Jumper dresses and swing dresses look quite nice for casual too. Things with belts round them don't look good on me, they just look like a sack tied round with string! For going out I look nice in a skinny jeans/heels/blazer combo. For work I wear fitted dresses.

I agree that v-necks are awful on me but I look nice in a slash neck or roll neck.

SandraTheBee · 04/12/2018 12:41

Sorry, had to laugh at the sack with string image.
I have no waist- my legs look like they are attached to my rib cage.
I am loving the images. Thank you all so much for your input.
I did have my style and colours done. The style but was a bit pants. All I learnt was that I needed more fitted clothes because I am slim. Nothing about balancing out my body shape. I have a better idea what to look for next time I am shopping.Smile

Ah you need to show off those lovely long legs! Maybe a contrasting colour of top and bottom will give an illusion of shape rather than all one colour, this is just musing though, no actual fashion expertise!

TheLongRider · 04/12/2018 17:46

Tess Daly is a classic rectangle. She has no waist. All her clothes try and create a waist or emphasis other parts to take attention away from her lack of waist definition.

SandraTheBee · 04/12/2018 18:03

Tess Daly has a bust and hips! I have neither. I am rectangular from the front and rectangular from the side.

Do you have a banana body? Robin Wright and Cameron Diaz are banana shapes who dress well imo.

SandraTheBee · 04/12/2018 19:18

banana? Haven't heard about that one( goes to look up)

I guess yes!

As @Redandblue11 says, I’m a big fan of contrasts to give the impression of a waist. I’m a short-arse so wide legged trousers don’t really suit me, but fortunately I love skirts so wear lots of slightly a-line styles with a fitted top (today it was a thin polo neck jumper) in a neutral colour. I keep patterns and bolder colours to my lower half to do the same.

If you’re looking for basics, Uniqlo’s merino crew neck and polo neck jumpers are great - fitted but not so skin tight it shows how flat-chested you are (or perhaps that’s just me...). And on the boobs front, do look at the bra fitting advice on here. I’m actually a 30DD (which is considerably less than a handful!) - wearing a well-fitting bra gives me more shape.

BurpAndRustle · 04/12/2018 22:30

This guide might be helpful then

Nicole Kidman, Anne Hathaway and Tilda Swindon are also bananas. Sometimes it’s also called “ruler” body shape.

SandraTheBee · 05/12/2018 07:09

Ypsilanti I am a 30 D, so even less than you.
I bought some Uniqlo merino- I am always complimented on them, but having started this thread I realise that they are all v necks and although I quite like them, I realise that they are the wrong neck line. Sad
