Dandruff shampoo

octopusrus · 03/12/2018 07:31

The last year or so I've developed dandruff much to my horror! Only tiny flakes very close to my scalp, nothing seems to dust onto my shoulders, just stays near the roots.

Does anyone have any shampoo recommendations? Am close to the end of a Ginger one from the Body Shop which I thought initially helped a little but now I'm not sure.

I remember Head and Shoulders apparently being a bit harsh? Never tried it though, but I dye my hair so didn't want anything to strip it.

Any ideas?

Nizoral is good.
There are lots of more conditioning versions of head and shoulders now but I haven't tried them. Tgel is also good for some but smells bad and gave me a rash

BiscuitDrama · 03/12/2018 07:37

Nizoral and Selsun and both brilliant, but I found a sulphate free shampoo sorted mine out. Took nearly all a bottle of Aubrey Organics to see a difference, but now no dandruff at all.
I also get on with the Jason and the Avalon here. Oh and the faith in nature is cheap and fine.

Am watching this thread with interest as I also have used the ginger body shop one without much success and also t gel.

Do try Selsun as a quick fix, Hodge although you need a chemist for it I think. It’s really fab stuff. After a week you can drop down to every other use and then even less. I found that once knobbled, a SLS free shampoo then kept it at bay.

I struggled with dandruff for years. I tried all sorts of anti-dandruff shampoos, but they all either left my hair rough and horrible or stripped all the colour out, or left my scalp really greasy - basically just swapping one problem for another.

My ephiphany was the day I read about SLS and how it could cause scalp problems. I tried an SLS free shampoo and was dandruff free within a couple of weeks. It has never come back, and it has been about 8 years now. There are loads on the market, I highly recommend trying it.

MrsPatmore · 03/12/2018 12:39

What does 'SLS' stand for please?

QuantumWeatherButterfly · 03/12/2018 14:05

MrsPatmore it stands for both Sodium Laureth Sulphate and Sodium Lauryl Sulphate, sometimes collectively known as Sulphates - though this isn't really accurate as there are other commonly used sulphates that don't cause an issue.

Shampoos will generally be labelled as either SLS free or Sulphate free.

Child's farm shampoo does the trick for my ds20

Ladominate14 · 03/12/2018 17:51

I have the same problem atm. Been using Alphosyl coal tar shampoo but it is not helping.

Goingonandonandon · 03/12/2018 17:53

I tried different sham[as I tend to have dandruff and faith in nature SLS free Hemp and Meadowfoam works brilliantly. It smells lovely too. No harsh chemicals.

octopusrus · 03/12/2018 21:16

Interesting re SLS-free - I've tried the body shop rainforest one too (which I think is SLS free?) but I'm sure it made it worse!

yea I tried the body shop one as well and didn't get along with it at all. It's not a good formulation. The Faith in Nature one is much better.

Klobuchar · 03/12/2018 21:48

Jason anti-dandruff shampoo is what you’re after. 2 washes and you’re done and is much less harsh on your hair than other brands. Also doesn’t stink to high heaven like Selsun.

redcaryellowcar · 03/12/2018 21:59

Is it itchy? I used nizoral if my head was itchy, it's white bottle but shampoo is bright pink, then I regularly use redken sensitive scalp. You can get an anti dandruff one but I find the regular one works as it's just less scalp irritating!

octopusrus · 03/12/2018 22:15

Nope not itchy... just very odd it arrived out of nowhere as my hair is usually on the greasy side, never had any dryness of hair or scalp before.

Posted too soon...

Thanks so much for the recommendations - will give the Jason or Faith in Nature a go and see how I get on. If I'm cured I will be back to report!

octopusrus As with normal shampoo, you might find a bit of trial and error finding one that suits both your scalp and your hair. I tried Naked (too watery, left my hair feeling like it still needed washing), OGX (my hair got really knotty after using it), and Pureology (amazing but waaaay too expensive) before I discovered L'Oreal PureColor - which is perfect for me, but almost impossible to find. I have to bulk order it from Amazon now. I'm terrified it's about to be discontinued, and then I'll be back at square 1!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 04/12/2018 17:17

Oh I used to LOVE loreal pure colour and was gutted they discontinued it!

TheHodgeoftheHedge · 07/12/2018 10:07

Guys I’ve had a breakthrough!
I decided to splurge on some Philip Kingsley Flaky/Itchy Scalp Toner and it’s cured me!
I put on one application after washing my hair and my horrible dry, white scales are virtually non existent. Also gone is the desire to scratch my scalp raw and the tight feeling. I am insanely excited!
