Will a load of makeup wreck my skin?

Iv never worn much makeup bug i am starting a new job where i need to look very groomed and sophisticated so im going for a vintage look with a strong red lip. It looks great but takes more removal than my usual mascara-and-liquid-radiance routine. Now my face is stinging and bits of it are red. Will putting a full face on and taking it off every day ruin my skin? Can i do anything to mitigate this?

What are you using to remove the make up?!
It shouldn't irritate your skin?

Stinging?!

To remove makeup: big blob of Simple creamy cleanser on generous wodge of cotton wool off a pleat. Then plain warm water on fresh cotton wool or splash face.

I don't think makeup per se will ruin your skin, but you can certainly become senstive to something you have used before, and they can also change the forumulation. I used Clinique Naturally Glossy mascara for years, and out of the blue it started stinging my eyes to hell. I also think some brands have too much perfume, some cheap brands are just crap (Revolution I am talking to you) and some are good (NYX). Trial and error will tell.

Use an oil cleanser which will melt the makeup right off and then can be gently wiped away with a warm wet cloth. No need for scrubbing or irritation.

The makeup itself shouldn't really damage your skin if you buy decent stuff.

Definitely change your cleanser, my face does this if I use a face wash, I now use a creamy cleanser and rub it all over my face then wipe it off with damp cotton wool.

Thanks ladies - i used an eye make up remover for the eyes which was fine but the johnson wipes for the foundation and lipstick and yes, they do seem quite perfumey! Rinsed face after and skin seems ok this morning but i will try these cream cleansers instead!

Oh Johnson wipes are the work of the devil! Yes, removing makeup with them will definitely leave you sore!

RiskIt4Biscuit · 03/12/2018 09:07

I've always found that wipes irritate my skin. They are generally quite perfumed or just full of stuff that my skin doesn't really agree with, and then the actual wipe itself is quite scratchy on the skin. So I've found that they sting too.

I'd suggest, as others, a different cleanser. I really like Clinique Take the Day Off Cleansing Balm, but the Body Shop Chamomile Cleansing Butter is really nice too. Rinse off with warm water and a flannel.

Makeup in itself should not ruin your skin - as long as you are using products that agree with your skin. If you use makeup that contains something that you're either sensitive to or that clogs your pores, you're likely to notice, but generally, makeup today should not wreck your skin.

I use miceller water which is hypoallergenic on face then baby lotion for eye make up.Ive used baby lotion for this for 20 years,it takes anything off and lasts ages.

Wearing makeup won't ruin your skin. I know several older women who've worn a full face of makeup every day of their lives. Skins remain fine. Just make sure you remove it every night with something really gentle .

BusterGonad · 03/12/2018 11:13

Sauv hey you're the only other person (on MN) that uses baby lotion as make up remover too! I love it. So cheap and great for sensitive dry skin!

BiggFactHunt · 05/12/2018 19:40

Emma Hardie cleanser is lovely, expensive but lasts ages.
I can’t use baby wipes on my face either. They make my skin bright red and sting like mad.
