Can anyone become beautiful?

I was just wondering what you thought about this. Do you think anyone can be beautiful with the right tools?

Obviously some people have a head start and beauty comes from within but I still wonder what you think.

And I guess the next question is: how? I think I look a lot better now I’ve focussed more on having good hair and wear more colour but don’t feel quite there yet in terms of looking my best but am unsure what to do next.

I think how much effort you can cope with putting in depends a lot on how much you are enjoying your life.

I have noticed that a lot of people who look very cool, chic and individual in their style have objectively 'ugly' faces, but they look great because they have panache and confidence. If they were thinking they were ugly they wouldn't look attractive. (This type tends to be thin too which can help).

Money can allow people to become very well-groomed and wear good clothes, which is attractive. I know someone like this. Her sister, with similar features, hair type etc, looks less attractive simply because she doesn't have the same cash to spend.

Truly beautiful people are few and far between but most people look lovely when they are smiling and happy, and nicer people do have an inner beauty that shows on the outside. I think the most beautifying thing we can all do is look after our teeth, and smile more.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 30/11/2018 10:40

No I don't. No one can buy true beauty. You can improve certain things about yourself but if you're not born beautiful you never will be.

Elledorado · 30/11/2018 11:02

I just dont understand the people saying "no". Money can buy cosmetic surgery, the best derms and nutritionists ... seriously, anyone can be conventionally beautiful if they have the money and the desire! I know money cant buy you, say, a supermodel's body but it can buy good skin, hair, teeth, style, a small nose, regular features... a decent figure (if you have the willpower obvs) etc etc etc

Elledorado I'm in the "no" camp because I think that beauty is something you either have or haven't, and it's not necessarily something that can be isolated to the extent that cosmetic surgery can fix it. So for instance, I look in the mirror and see that I am not beautiful, but I honestly couldn't say "if I made x feature smaller/bigger, and had y procedure, and did z to my skin, I would be beautiful". I just don't think it works like that - and there are enough different ideas about what beauty is to make it impossible to have one universal standard anyway.

Being comfortable in your own skin
Generous to others

Good teeth help as well...

halfwitpicker · 30/11/2018 12:52

Beauty? No.

Attractive? Yes, you just need time, money and willpower.

pretzelflipzaretheanswer · 30/11/2018 13:16

People can change their hairline?? Really? Is this just like a hair transplant?

I would love this! I have thick hair, but I'm definitely receding and I think that's more aging than anything!

Safeandwarm · 30/11/2018 13:29

No.

I think plastic surgery is a red herring really. I think it makes people look more symmetrical, acceptable maybe but not more beautiful.

pp. Mentioned Ashlee Simpson and I think she looked better before.

Sorry to be mean but Ivanka Trump’s surgeries have not mad her beautiful, just odd looking, her husband even more so.

Then again I think when someone has that glow about them it’s something really special and you can have off features and still be beautiful. Grooming helps everyone, but I can seldom be bothered.

Safeandwarm · 30/11/2018 13:30

*made her beautiful

Notreallyhappy · 30/11/2018 13:42

Beauty isn't how you look it's how you are...I've met some well groomed made up well dressed people but they have an ugly personality..

Morgan12 · 30/11/2018 13:47

I think Tori Spelling is proof that money can't make you beautiful unless you are semi-beautiful beforehand.

Mainie · 30/11/2018 14:04

Beauty isn't how you look it's how you are...I've met some well groomed made up well dressed people but they have an ugly personality.

I think that's well-meaning nonsense. Objectively, beauty is to do with symmetry and the body-type and grooming norms of your particular society -- fat is beautiful in some west African cultures, bound feet were beautiful for centuries in China.

We may personally find certain individuals beautiful in our eyes because we love them or know their good qualities, but their inner qualities aren't going to have them generally held up as ideal-looking people according to our current norms.

In answer to your question, OP, I think that with money, time and will you can transform your basic physical 'material' to look attractive/expensive/well-cared-for.

BusterGonad · 30/11/2018 14:21

I find faces changed through surgery very boring to look at, I'm over the whole identikit face of almost every celeb!

Sarcelle · 30/11/2018 15:06

No, you can't become beautiful. Natural beauty is rare. You can make yourself look attractive via artifice but that still does not make you beautiful.

beachysandy81 · 30/11/2018 15:19

I think make up and hair can make a huge difference. Look at Emily Attack. She looks pretty normal in the Jungle compared to her character in the Inbetweeners. I still think she looks nice though without it all.

Racecardriver · 30/11/2018 15:21

Well of course some people have physical flaws that would probably preclude beauty. But most people can look beautiful with good grooming, lighting etc.

EmGee · 30/11/2018 15:40

I think the modern notion of beauty has been completely warped by plastic surgery, treatments eg fillers, Botox etc. As mentioned, they might make someone look a better, more symmetrical version of themselves.

I hate the identikit version of 'beauty' that exists now. Everyone has to have long, glossy hair, thick painted-on eyebrows, lash extensions, fake tan, fake nails, fake teeth. Fake boobs. Fake bum. Fake everything! I hate it with a vengeance. It is so damaging to young girls/women.

I think too that beauty is in the eye of the beholder so of course there is no one 'ideal'.

I asked a male friend today what makes a woman beautiful in his opinion and his response was 'you can't go far wrong with a genuine smile'

TheHoundsofLove · 30/11/2018 15:41

I definitely believe that anyone can look attractive/well-groomed/well-presented. But, I agree with PPs - you either have true beauty or you don't. And no amount of plastic surgery can replicate it. I don't think that natural prettiness (different to beauty) can be replicated either.

SwedishEdith · 30/11/2018 16:11

Money and surgery just makes someone morph into a generic bland "attractive" look. But that's not beauty. Look at Ivanka Trump.

I was trying to find a picture of a young Sophia Loren as she's often cited as not unconventional looking but beautiful but she looks perfect in every photo I can see.

Can anyone become beautiful?
SwedishEdith · 30/11/2018 16:14

*as unconventional
