Dinner dress, does it have to be long?

Going to freemasons xmas dinner with DP for a first time and the dress code is dinner dress!
As I got no long/evening dresses I am wondering if I need to get one urgently! I was planning to wear a cocktail (just below the knees) dress but not so sure now!

I've not heard of dinner dress, but I've gone to many black tie dinners. I always wear below the knee for them and never had a problem. There have been times when I seem overdressed!

If you're worried about it, you might be able to pick up a reasonably cheap floor length dress from H&M (they have more online only) or ASOS.

Thank you for taking time to reply. DP will be wearing black / bow tie and I just scooped a cheap floor length dress on ebay, but would much prefer to wear my just under the knees dress. It is expected that I will be one of the younger there so really wouldn't like to stand out as a underdressed youngster! (i am 40 by the way Grin)

Dress codes are so easy for men!

If you are really unsure, see if you can find any photos from previous years and see what others are wearing, that should give you an overall impression of the event too.

I found that unless a dress code is very explicit in their expectations, there's always room for flexibility with dresses.

I went to one black tie dinner and there was an early twenties girl who was wearing a shorts playsuit. I wouldn't even wear that during the day in the park!

Yes a dinner dress is a long formal dress.

Someone I know goes to these Masons' do's regularly and she always wears floor-length dresses.

I'd say full length or at least mid calf.

They're both lovely and the long one is perfect for this occasion.

They look like the same dress to me, but if one is floor length wear that. The masons do like sticking to tradition.

No, the dresses aren't the same though are both pink SmileI personally feel much better in the shorter dress but I guess the floor length is a safe option for old fashioned freemasons. Thank you.
