Gone grey but look haggard - best homehair dye?

JoyceDivision · 27/11/2018 23:41

I've done double well Grin growing out a pixie AND my hair dye (applauds self)

But... I look soooo haggard. I rarely wear makeup but the fashionable grey I envisaged is instead a draining salt and pepper making me look washed out.

I use the toning shampoo but it's not thematic I hoped for... Is it time to back to the dye, and if so, which is the best?

Thanks

I make my own 'hair tea' to dye my grey salt and pepper hair dark blonde. I use 6 camomile teabags, 2 redbush teabags, half a teaspoon of instant coffee powder and a very small pinch of turmeric (leases than quarter of a teaspoon). I brew it all up in a teapot and leave to go cold enough to pour over my head. I pour it over freshly washed dry hair then dry it, leaving it in. It is enough to stain the hair and fades after one wash but not completely. I just use the tea each time I wash my hair as it is completely natural and very cheap.

As a guide coffee and black tea stain hair brown, redbush tea gives a red tone. Camomile and turmeric give a golden tone. Go easy on the turmeric, though, because people can use it to dye their hair bright yellow. Turmeric is a pretty powerful dye. I like it though because it completely counteracts the grey/silver tones to make them golden.

Are you using the toning shampoo every time you wash your hair? If you are then your hair colour will look dull, dark and murky. Toning shampoo is only beneficial to use about once or twice a month. I recommend a good clarifying shampoo before you decide to undue your hard work.

Lovely, thanks both of you!

Nutrisse Garnier

That's interesting Era as my hairdresser said to keep using it after the bleach had grown out (I don't buy it from her in case you're wondering)

i'll use normal shampoo for a bit and see if it's 'brighter'

leafgrass That's interesting. How much water do you use and how long do you keep the mixture for? ( Assuming you make a load and keepit to use more than once?)

White Hot Hair is great for grey hair.
It's not tested on animals.
Expensive but lasts ages. Reduced at the moment.
Difficulty in finding it so ordered online for my sister.

ItsJust I find that the toning shampoo only really works when its need, ie when your hair has taken on that yellow tinge. I know that my hair doesn't benefit from toning shampoo all the time but you maybe different. Plus, I find toning shampoos to be drying.

Undo not undue.

Magpie, I make it up in a standard sized teapot. I don't keep the mixture but you probably could. A couple of days in the fridge? Whatever you would keep a soft drink for, I suppose, I don't know for sure. I only started experimenting with this recently. Another thing you might do is put it in a spray bottle. At the moment I just tip it over my head Grin.

Majirel hair dye is brilliant. Lots of threads on here about it.
Easy to apply when mixed with a cream peroxide and you only need to mix up what you need rather than using a whole pack of you just want to do your roots.
