Why are we all wearing the wrong bra size, it can't be rocket science....

Surely there is no great mystery to knowing your bra size - don't you just measure yourself

www.amplebosom.com/acatalog/Measuring_Guide.html

It is supposed to be the classic bignorker error to go too big on the width fitting and too small on the cupsize, but surely all the programmes are plaion wrong when they say 70% of us are wearing the wrong size?

I tried measuring mine and I can't remember what size it said, but was ridiculous, I wear 36dd/e and is comfy and looks good. Every shop seems to say a different size.

NuttyMuffins · 23/06/2007 14:38

Have never been measured, and i think it is a waste of time unless you are going to then buy all of your bras from the shop you were measured in as all bras are different.

I am currently a 34DD as far as I know. Possibly 34E.

hermykne · 23/06/2007 14:39

i'm not
never did.

but i think people just guess

NuttyMuffins · 23/06/2007 14:40

Agree about some bar types just not doing the job. I cannot wear those ones that are cut diagonally across, half way up your boobs, I just fall out and they look awful.

NuttyMuffins · 23/06/2007 14:40

bra types even.

Gingermonkey · 23/06/2007 15:49

I have 2 tic tacs down my top for a bosom. (34 AA) I wish I could wear a bra that was too small, sadly when shopping for a sports bra and having no luck I suggested to the lady in M&S that she nip up to girlswear and get me a trainer bra. She looked like she was going to cry at the thought of a 30 odd year old woman wearing a bra designed for a 12 yr old. Fitted me perfectly though and I was very happy!!!! It even said A cup on the label so I was even more pleased!!!!

wishingfourgotone · 23/06/2007 16:01

I have measured myself to buy bras out catalogue and come up as 38C, in m&s was told im 36D went to beatties and she looked at me said the bra id just brought didnt fit went and got some bras and her tape measure she measured for my back size then told me my size was 32G she brought me some bras to tryin 32G told her i felt these were tight after a cpl we decided im more like a 34G and yes some bras i can squeeze into 32G but prefer my comfortable 34G

suey2 · 23/06/2007 18:33

if it is any comfort, I would just love to wear little spaghetti straps in the summer and even maternity tops, unless they are very stretchy, cut me off mid-boob. I have only put on 2lb so far (15 + 5) and it has ALL gone to my breasts. It is all getting rather embarassing when bending over my patients (i am a manipulative physiotherapist) and i look forward to my bump getting bigger so that i can cease looking like an overweight porn star!

LaCerbiatta · 23/06/2007 22:12

I'm a 34B, so I suppose bra fitting is less of rocket science in my case. But there's one thing that really annoys me: the fact that a cup size is not constant, i.e. the cup of a 34B is smaller than the cup of a 36B. So when I go to try bras I have to try a 32C, a 34B and a 36A, and they're really not that different. Am I the only one to think this doesn't make any sense? Would love tho hear experts opinions on this!

expatinscotland · 23/06/2007 22:15

I really don't have the money to get fitted for one and pay a fortune for the good-fitting ones, tbh.

SlightlyMadSugar · 23/06/2007 22:17

In answer to OP - denial.

I measured myself when preg and calculated that I had gone from and A cup to a C/D cup. I decided that that couldn't possibly be right and brought a B cup.

When I was measured after giving birth 2-3 weeks later I came in at a DD - so my C/D was quite possibly correct after all.

SlightlyMadSugar · 23/06/2007 22:24

Oh and the best 'measurement' I had was in M&S where I was measured for underbust size and then the staff looked at me visually, asked what style I wanted and suggested we start at a B cup. I put it on and she 'examined' me in it - so it was quite literally a bra fitting like you would get for shoes.

I then put the bra back on the shelf and brought a similar bra from BHS for half the price

NKF · 23/06/2007 22:28

They're cut differently and small changes in weight and even the menstrual cycle can change how a bra fits. That business of underbust and adding inches has never worked for me. I think the best way is to be measured and then the nice ladylike women in John Lewis or Fenwicks made a judgement and you wave your arms about a bit and you get there in the end. I think you do need to get measured every time. I do anyway.

Walnutshell · 25/06/2007 11:52

lol at peanuts and tic tacs!

Think I might b/feed til ds is 26 just to stay at the bottom end of a B cup...

Gingermonkey · 26/06/2007 08:04

I went up to an A cup when I was pregnant and obviously couldn't find a single maternity bra in my size. And then when it came to trying to find a BFing bra - I just got laughed at.

Gingermonkey · 26/06/2007 08:05

LOL at walnutshell - Bitty!!!!!!!

Furball · 26/06/2007 08:14

I put my measurements in online on one site like Figleaves and it told me I was a 40AA! I am somewhere round the 36D 38C mark depending on cut. It then went on to say that unfortunately they don't make bras in that size (not surprisingly!)
