What is wrong with my hair??

My hair is doing something very strange at the moment.

When wet during washing it feels incredibly dry, crispy and straw like even with copious amounts of conditioner. It's actually quite hard to wash as it's so dry.

I am sat here with Philip Kingsley elasticizer on which I have been doing weekly but it makes no difference.

When dry the hair feels fine and 'normal'.

My hair is highlighted at an Aveda salon if that makes any difference. I have been going there for years.

What can I do to correct this?? Has anyone suffered from a similar issue?
My hairdresser just suggests hair masks but they are not cutting the mustard.

Have you tried 'washing; it with just conditioner?

Or condition first then rinse then shampoo ?
I've done this when my hair was dyed lighter and went a bit cotton woolley.

missyB1 · 25/11/2018 20:41

My hair often does this as well, feels crispy dry and straw like when Im washing it. Masks and conditioner don’t really help. Try changing your shampoo and conditioner, and ask for a smoothing treatment at your next salon visit.

Have you tried coconut oil? My hairdresser reccommended it to me, i put it on before bed and wash in the morning. It has made a big difference.

tasharichford · 25/11/2018 23:15

I use Kerastase on my bleached hair and makes a world of difference. I second the coconut oil overnight once a week too. Have you been put on any medication recently? This can have an impact on how the hair feels.

calistaraines · 25/11/2018 23:24

No prescription meds but have started taking Angus castus for pmt.

Will try coconut oil

For those that use coconut oil overnight, how do you protect your pillow?

halfwitpicker · 26/11/2018 01:39

Any changes in diet?

GhostSauce · 26/11/2018 06:56

@tasharichford Which kerastase do you use?

tasharichford · 26/11/2018 07:23

This is the shampoo and conditioner that I use x

Thanks!

Coconut hot oil treatment. It was on offer in Boots a few days ago.

tasharichford · 26/11/2018 08:57

No problem, my hair took a massive dip once I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism and this really helped me x

Is it possible it's the Elasticiser/conditioner which is building up on your hair? As I understand it, Elasticiser must just sit in the top layers of the hair shaft to fill in small gaps and your hair may not actually be that dry but coated/saturated? If your hair is not snapping off or getting more split ends it could be that. I'm sure I read something about 'protein overload'...you could try a clarifying shampoo?

tasharichford · 26/11/2018 11:38

Velour is right you kind of need to work out if the hair is lacking moisture or protein. Too much protein can actually make the hair worse and make it snap more.

OhWhoToBeToday · 26/11/2018 19:45

Do you swim a lot? Could it be a build up of chlorine in your hair?

MadameButterface · 26/11/2018 19:58

it sounds like build up of some kind, you need to try and get it hydrated without bunging stuff on it that builds up, eg oil, silicone and protein. Are you in a hard water area? how often do you wash your hair?

you need a clarifying shampoo but with no SLS in it. it might feel like it's not working as it won't foam up as much. Then a good conditioner without silicones - over time they work to seal moisture out of the hair rather than into it. Try and wash your hair less - I know some people feel grubby if they don't shampoo every day or every other day, but if this is you then it won't be helping.

Once the build up is gone, have a look at olaplex or innoluxe as a treatment. but remember a little goes a long way.

MadameButterface · 26/11/2018 22:26

...and if you’re a heat styling junkie try and rein that in too! Use a heat protection spray - it’s not just another unnecessary product, it is essential. Try and do it less eg try leaving your hair till it’s 80% dry then finishing it with the dryer. Or leave it to dry completely and try putting waves in with the straighteners - once you master this it takes less than two minutes, it’s not like frying your whole head. Just try and minimise any possible further damage while you work out what’s causing this.

SarahBeeney · 27/11/2018 00:21

All you need is a wide tooth shower comb and comb through it whilst the conditioner is on.
My hair is in good condition but after finding out the shampoo feels like straw. It's the colour that makes it feel like this.
