Does one exist? I could really do with finding a good polish for my holiday!

I’ve given up with nail varnish. I now have dip powder done every three weeks and apart from regrowth, it looks as good at 3 weeks as it does on day one. These are my nails after nearly 3 weeks. I’m due to get them done on Monday.

Nail varnish that won't chip within a day??!!
TetherEnding · 23/11/2018 11:49

Any polish will last more than a day if you put it on clean nails over a base coat and add seche vite as a top coat. 5-7 days wear no probs.

AhoyDelBoy · 23/11/2018 11:58

Doesn’t it depend on a number of other factors though @TetherEnding? E.g. How often you’re washing dishes and your hands, kind of work you do, how soft your nails are, quality of the nail polish used... I might try that @DaftCat Smile. I’m getting gel every two weeks ATM but that sometimes even chips after a few days (although no way near as bad as regular nail polish). Sorry OP I’m no help really. I’d recommend getting a gel manicure for a holiday definitely 💅🏼

Nail varnish that won't chip within a day??!!
LadyFuschia · 23/11/2018 12:03

Essie are amazing and so are OPI but I always wear rubber gloves and they do chip after a few days if i’m hard on my hands eg cleaning or gardening.

hamabr86 · 23/11/2018 12:03

A good top coat and wrap the tips with the varnish / top coat. Also do it an hour before bed so it has enough time to set overnight. Took me years to work out why my nail varnish always chipped and this massively helped. I don't normally bother with base coat, I find it doesn't adhere as well and 2 in 1 top and base coats are useless.

twattymctwatterson · 23/11/2018 12:05

Honestly the most durable nail varnishes I've found are Primarks. I've worn OPI as well as multiple high street brands and Primark's are just better

MarcusIsSquooshedInTheCellar · 23/11/2018 12:18

I've never heard of this dip powder stuff before.

Huskylover1 · 23/11/2018 12:27

I've had them done at the salon before, but last year one of the nails fell off mid holiday, and I didn't have nail glue with me to stick it back on, so I looked like a numpty. Plus it's about £30, so not cheap. I just would love a varnish to last longer than a day! Don't know where I'm going wrong, other than perhaps buying too cheap?

A good top coat and wrap the tips with the varnish / top coat What does this mean please?

Dip powder is brilliant. I love it. I find gels / shellac makes my nails soft and although it’s more durable than varnish, I was always chipping them within a week. With very few exceptions, the powder lasts for weeks. I only get them redone every three weeks because I hate the regrowth and they get too long for me.
I think the most well known make is SNS but there are quite a few. It takes less time to do than shellac too

GlasgowWorrier · 23/11/2018 12:29

Another vote for Seche Vite. I did my nails in quite a slapdash manner five days ago, whacked a layer of Seche Vite on top and they're still pretty immaculate.

shecamefromgreece · 23/11/2018 12:39

Husky that sounds like you had acrylic nails not gel polish, two separate things.
Gel polish is a polish that is painted onto your natural nail and set with a lamp. It will last a couple of weeks on most people. I've just had mine done they are very short at the mo so don't look great but they will grow with the polish so in a few weeks will look better.

shecamefromgreece · 23/11/2018 12:41

Oh and wrapping the nail with polish means painting it over the end of the nail. I could never get on with seche vite it always peeled whenever I used it.

Huskylover1 · 23/11/2018 13:09

Lots of tips, thank you! Can you put seche vite over normal nail varnish?

CrazySheepLady · 23/11/2018 13:18

I always take the base coat, polish and too coat over the edge of the nails and Essie is my favourite brand. Always allow time in between coats for drying.

The reason we have nails is to protect our fingers, so nail ends will always be vulnerable to chips, unfortunately. The woman who taught me manicure and pedicure always used to say 'treat your nails like jewels, not tools' and that's been good advice for me.

il0vew1ne · 23/11/2018 13:32

I have tried every nail varnish brand and every top coat brand including Seche Vite which peeled for me also, and unless it is a glitter nail varnish - nothing lasts more than 3-4 days.
The top coat I am using at the moment is amour by zoya and so far that's the best.

Meet0nTheIedge · 23/11/2018 13:34

I use base coat, two colour coats, seche vite and OPI drying drops. I usually get several dsys without chipping but nearly always get tip wear showing within 24 hours. Wrapping makes no difference whatsoever and is very tricky anyway as I keep my nails very short so it's hard to avoid getting it on the skin. What actually works, counter-intuitively, is giving the tips a gentle file with a crystal file every night to get rid of the white line.

spanishwife · 23/11/2018 13:37

Nails Inc is my go to, but it's actually all about application...

  1. file and buff away ridges
  2. swipe nail varnish remover over nails to remove oil and any bits of nail dust
  3. Nails in Kale base coat
  4. 2 thin coats of nail varnish
  5. Nails inc caviar top coat over nail
  6. extra top coat over top edge of nail
TillyVonMilly · 23/11/2018 16:37

Painted my nails Tuesday evening, nails inc base, Opi nail varnish and nails inc top coat. It had started chipping yesterday and today after doing so stuff in the garden and wearing leather gardening gloves, they look appalling Blush
Only had shellac once and that started to chip/lift after two days, plus my nails weren’t in a good condition after it despite having the IBX treatment first. I just don’t think my nails are really suited to being painted. I very rarely paint them in summer but winter I like to have some colour but it never lasts

AhoyDelBoy · 23/11/2018 20:00

I’m definitely going to try the SNS powder now @DaftCat Smile. It’s a bit more expensive than gel/shellac though isn’t it? Probably worth it if I can get an extra week out of it though. I also don’t like my nails too long.

Bloodynorthernrock · 23/11/2018 20:26

I've never tried seche vite but find Sally Hansen Insta Dri topcoat or drops make a huge difference

Sarcelle · 23/11/2018 20:44

I used to have a nail polish habit, around 250 of them from a variety of makes from cheap to very high end. Before I came to my senses I used to hunt down hard to find shades! Used to be a hobby, bit of a sad one.

I found Chanel polishes to be disappointing. OPI and Butter London are great. But for cheap ones I really rate Primark (totally suprised with how good they are and around £1) and Maybelline - the stay perfect ones rather than the little round bottles. The shades are not extensive but if it is longevity you are after, these are good. And value for money.

I used to be a Seche Vite fan but it does cause shrinkage, and thickens up. You can buy the thinner to keep it going but who needs that faff? But the one I rate is Nails Inc Kensington top coat. Lots of shine and quick drying like SV but smoother application and I have found it does not thicken up. (Hate their base coat though. Orly Bonder all the way for base.)

Shenanagins · 23/11/2018 20:50

I swear by Barry M with a Sally Hansen top coat, will usually last about 5 days.

Onynx · 23/11/2018 21:29

The one topcoat that works for me and is better (imo) than Seche Vite is Sally Hansen's insta-dry in the red bottle. Amazing stuff!

InspectorAlleyn · 23/11/2018 21:43

Another vote for dip power. I get Gelish dip every three weeks and it looks as good on the last day as on the first.
