Make-Up Confusion

Is anyone else completely overwhelmed with the amount/variety of products around these days? It's been a while since I bought much stuff or really bothered doing much of anything so I've been replenishing my supplies recently. Was in Superdrug browsing the make-up today and there's like 15 different kind of primer, skin balm, skin illuminator, highlighter, contour, glow gel (or something), lip primer, the list goes on. Thought my head was going to explode. Is any of this actually worth bothering with? Do I need to contour or highlight my face? For background I'm 31 and have always been rubbish with make-up though I like playing with eye colours sometimes. Most days I don't bother doing anything except tidying my eyebrows and moisturising (love tinted moisturiser) but I wouldn't mind looking a bit more 'done' IYKWIM, even if it's just for when I go out in the evenings. What does everyone else do on a daily basis? And please tell me I'm not the only one who doesn't know what all these different products even do! Grin

Daily (if going in to the office) I would use;
Maybelline Eraser concealer under eyes
Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage on red marks/spots
Clinique loose powder
Clinque Cheek Pop blusher
Becca shimmering skin highlighter

Eyeshadow (currently Morphe palettes)
Clinique superfine liner for brows
Mascara (currently Essence from Wilko)
Lipstick (Any in red or pink. Today Rimmel)
ELF setting spray

Start by adding a blusher and matching lipstick/gloss to your routine. They make such a difference.

Day to day I usually just wear mascara, maybe a tinted Iipbalm or some lipgloss.

For a special occasion it would be:

Skin, bit of concealer or powder foundation if needed.

Define brows with some Boy Brow by Glossier

Little bit of highlighter on the cheekbone/brow one. Maybe some blusher or cheek satin. Sometimes both, sometimes one or the other. I like the peach blossom blusher look that’s going around just now- little, subtle, bit of pink or peach blusher on cheeks plus forehead and eyelids that’s going around just now

Liquid liner if it’s evening/winter. Sometimes a little bit of gold pencil, under the lower lashes.

Bit of lip stain, or sheer lipstick or glittery lipgloss.

Generally, I tend to pick one feature to accentuate, keep the other quite minimal. It might be eyes (liner), lips (colour/glitter) or skin (blush and highlighter). I don’t like going full on for everything. Might sometimes accentuate 2 areas if I really feel like going for it.

You definitely don't need to buy into it all. The more things they invent, the more we want/think we need.
I'd go for some tinted moisturiser, mascara, blusher, lip balm/lipstick.

Ugh oh,I wear: moisturizer, primer (maybeline), double wear light, loose powder, blush, eyeshadow, lash primer, mascara, setting spray. Need to buy highlighter.

I do have bad skin (stress / poor diet/ can't change either at the moment) so putting make up on really makes the difference.

I use mascara because my lashes are light and I think they look better when they are darker. I'll occasionally use consealer to cover a blemish but I wouldn't use foundation. I find foundation is like whitewashing a canvas, it creates this one tone colour which means you need the blush, contour and highlight to bring back all the features of your face. If I had a lot of redness or scarring I may be inclined to use foundation to even it all out but I dont. For me, I use makeup to enhance my features which a lot of it doesnt so I don't use it. I love to watch in awe of those who do use it to create some wonderful looks.

I'm a bit like that sitranced once foundation is there I feel like I look weird and then need to do loads more which seems to require greater skills than mine. That's why I mainly stick to tinted moisturiser, haven't yet found a foundation that looks natural although there may be one out there somewhere. I've heard good things about Revlon colourmatch but never tried. I don't like the ones that are completely full coverage like paint, it feels weird on my face.

I think lipstick looks weird on me as well and I've tried loads of different shades. Mainly stick to gloss or that lip-stain stuff or tinted balms.
