Hairdresser advice please

Hi, so I have really thin (but a lot of) hair. I have it highlighted and have had olaplex. Trimmed regularly.

My is and always has been really knotty. I use decent shampoo and conditioner.

Now when I get out of the shower I spray an Aussie leave in conditioner on as well. I've done this since forever and brush through with a tangle teezer. This still takes some doing. Is there a better spray I could be using or anything anyone recommends for knotty hair. My hairdresser doesn't really have any advice, the olaplex didn't really make a huge difference.

Or is this just because it's fine and I have to suck it up.

Not a hairdresser but have really coarse frizzy tangly hair, it’s just nothing like human hair. Anyway have been using some kerastase stuff over the last four moths and my hair is almost turning into normal hair 😯 I get it from the salon, they make it for you

It’s not because your hair is fine but because of the highlights. Unfortunately slightly damaged hair is part and parcel with bleaching your hair, so your highlighted strands are a bit more dry/rough and easily get into knots.

I have fine hair too, but never had knotty hair until I had highlights. In fact my hair used to stay tangle free and straight all day, however now I get really small slight knots (not actual tangles, a brush can quickly sort it out, but I can’t run my fingers through my hair sort of thing?). I think it’s the dry strands just catching onto other dry strands

Do your best to keep your hair well moisturised and conditioned and regularly trimmed, but you’ll still get slight tangles because you colour your hair

Also just wanted to add that you are further damaging your hair by 1. Taking your tangles out of wet hair and 2. Using a bloody tangle teezer to do this! Your hair is weak and prone to stretching when wet, and shouldn’t be detangled at this state as you’ll cause breakage and weaken the hair further. Also a tangle teezer??? Wet hair should be combed with a wide tooth detangling comb, use the tangle teezer when your hair is dry - you’re definitely overworking your weak, wet hair by using a tangle teezer. Also detangle your hair before you wash it, whilst it’s still dry. You won’t need to do it after you wash it.

Wowwwww I was doing everything so wrong! Haha thanks for the tips!

It is the wet tangle teezer, the one with a handle. But it does eff all. Will try wide tooth comb and make sure I brush before hand. Annoying when the hairdresser is adamant that bleach isn't drying anymore and that's a thing of the past. What is one supposed to think 🙄

I use argan oil on my hair when it is wet and then brush through section by section. Also have highlighted hair

Fashionista101 · 21/11/2018 10:54

Ah oil I've thought about trying. But I also get quite greasy hair, might try it on just the ends.

I don't have any solutions but I have highlights and don't get knots. I do use Kerastase though, so maybe that's the way to go!

Fashionista101 · 21/11/2018 10:55

@Bombardier25966 is that the make of shampoo and conditioner or a treatment?

As it's on offer I'm going for it. I'll remember your user name if I don't have hair like a model by next week Winkthanks!

I also have the pink version of the stuff in bombardier’s link, definitely a fan.

dawnacorns · 21/11/2018 13:26

silk pillowcase might help?

Interested about this tangle teezer news, my hairdresser recommended them to me! Just said to hold the lengths of the hair in your hand like an imaginary ponytail and start at the bottom and work your way up gently, never just free-brush as you catch on knots and break the hair dragging the brush down. If I use anything else, comb included it feels far worse, loads of hair comes out and it takes way longer.

I don't colour my hair, it's in very good condition, no split ends, it's long and fine-ish, but lots of it and it tangles up at the sight of a slight breeze even Hmm - I'm lazy but using a decent hair mask once a week and then if I can be bothered I smooth some hair oil in the ends. It does mitigate it but nothing ever fixes it. I feel your pain OP!
It's worse in winter because it seems to inexplicably matt up at the back if I'm wearing a scarf.

Fashionista101 · 21/11/2018 16:18

Hahha scarf = a dreadlock around the back of my neck! Total pain!
