HELP...again, stop me from looking like a cave woman please...FRIZZZZY hair

PippaParty · 19/11/2018 21:05

Dries ok, quite smooth and bouncy with 'Big Hair' or straighteners.

Step outside into the damp air and WOW!

FRIZZY!

What can I do?

I treat my hair with henna and add a heat treatment spray. Beyond shoulder length. Any other suggestions would be gratefully tried!

Have a look into the curly girl method (working with natural waves and curls) There are threads on here about it. I live in a humid area and got fed up with straightening my hair. Being curly takes much less effort.

TheWombat · 19/11/2018 22:17

I have very fine, long, dry, curly/frizzy hair. Over the years I’ve found the following are helpful, in order of price:
-tying hair in a loose plait at night - loose, controlled waves by morning.

  • avoid heat as much as possible
  • deep conditioner every time - I like redken all soft or joico intense hydrator. Cost about £15 ish, but you can buy 1 litre bottles for about £30 which are fantastic value.
  • olaplex salon treatment. I ask them to put it on my hair after work, then I go home and sleep in it and wash out the next morning. It works! Cost: £25
  • heated rollers - big ones, for for frizz control rather than curling. Kinder than curling tongs or ghds - cost: £50
  • Mason Pearson hairbrush- expensive, but it really has made a difference to frizz and split ends. I’ve had mine 10 years and it looks like new, so a good investment. Cost: £60
  • the big one: keratin treatment. It doesn’t totally eliminate frizz or curl, but it makes it so much easier to manage. Expensive though - £200 at my local salon.

I’ve left off the keratin treatment over the last year and have really noticed the difference. So tempted to go back to them but I have a sneaking suspicion that over time, it breaks down the curl pattern, makes hair more dry and thus creates more frizz...

But, if I do all of the above, I can basically achieve Kate Middleton levels of swish, despite basically having a birds nest to start off with!

PippaParty · 20/11/2018 21:05

Thanks for the advice. WOW Wombat I think I must be so much lazier and tighter than you!

I think I'm more of a 'bargain 99p spray' type girl!

I like John Frieda primer in the Frizz-Ease range. It's a cream rather than a serum and it seems to really help if I put it on damp hair.

I second the advice about tying back/loose plait at night. My bird's nest looks a lot better if I leave it to dry naturally in a plait or clipped into loose twists rather than just leaving it loose.

I know it sounds daft but a hat really helps in cold, damp weather. If I loosely clip my hair back and then pull on a knitted hat, it looks so much sleeker when I take the hat off.

I also think that going with the curl (if your hair is frizzy then it has a curl in it that's fighting to get out!) works better than trying to tame it. I just didn't find the curly girl method worked that well for me.

WhereAreWeNow · 21/11/2018 13:56

Oh at the Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil deep conditioner makes my hair really sleek (even though I hate the strong vanilla smell).

RatherBeRiding · 21/11/2018 17:11

Frizz-ease is good, Not expensive.

PippaParty · 21/11/2018 18:59

So many thanks all, it is good to have some product recommendations. Will have a go!

Good luck Pippa I feel like I’m waging a constant battle against frizz and tangles.. most of the time I let it air dry to try and placate the curls. The keratin only happens if I have a rare ‘flush’ month and I’m usually too lazy to get the rollers out of the cupboard! Am religious about olaplex and deep conditioner though.
Going to try Shea moisture deep conditioner too now...

HeavenlyEyes · 21/11/2018 21:03

curly girl method here too - ditch shampoo, all sls and silicones.

HomeEdRocks18 · 21/11/2018 21:13

My hair is thick and wiry and red. I use 99p shampoo and conditioner. Then towel dry and use Lee Stafford hair serum. I usually wear my hair up in a bun and leave it to dry naturally. The next day my hair will be frizz free - even in the rain

MadameButterface · 21/11/2018 21:14

Frizz is a cry for help from imprisoned curls!

Honestly, try the curly girl method. It sounds like a lot at first but it’s nowhere near as much of a pita as straightening hair every day and stressing about rain, dealing with limp hair with product build up etc etc. Give it a couple of months. Find a salon that will do a curl by curl cut. Look at curly pages on insta - rezocut academy has some amazing inspirational before and after photos that will stop all you ‘yeah but my hair’s not PROPERLY curly’ naysayers in your tracks and shows exactly what a great cut and the right products can do.

GVmama · 21/11/2018 21:14

Curly girl method here too. No sls or silicone, I co-wash with cheapy 90p conditioner from Wilko and I use it to condition and style too. The only other product I use is an occasional drop of almond oil. My hair has never looked better and is in great condition. If you're a 'less is more' girl then it could be for you.

MadameButterface · 21/11/2018 21:18

GV do you use gel at all? Wilko’s own 89p gel is cg approved and good. Throw a bit of that in there, treat yoself 😁

Boredofthecommute · 21/11/2018 21:34

Mine is exactly the same! Looks so nice at home but as soon as I leave the house it’s a mess, BUT I’ve recently started using Mark Hill Sleek and Straight and the Taming Anti Humidity (after trying frizz ease and lee Stafford) and so far so good!

princesstiasmum · 21/11/2018 22:17

A hot hair brush straightens hair in minutes, and a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner are good

TheWombat · 21/11/2018 22:49

I tried endless versions of curly girl and it just wasn’t for me - my roots looked greasy even after I’d just washed it! Gutting - I’d really thought I had the answer there. For me I think it doesn’t work because although I have properly masses of hair, the individual strands are very fine, so they don’t take well to lots of left-in product/oil. Shame because it’s true, my frizz is definitely curls waiting to happen..

GVmama · 22/11/2018 07:18

@MadameButterface I do use Cantu custard as gel if I want to hold the curl but if I'm honest most of the time I don't bother. My hair is so thick and takes all day to air dry and I look like a total scarecrow if it dries in a cast, I don't have a day a week to hide away so I just wash and leave conditioner in and it looks okayish on wash dayGrin
My hair isn't as curly as it could be, but it's frizz free for the first time in my life and that's a total revelation!!

Temerity123 · 22/11/2018 12:56

Curly Girl didn’t work for me and I followed it to the letter. I have very frizzy, wavy/curly hair but not much of it. It’s like a giant Bush in humidity or rain but if I tie it back it makes the most pathetic, skinny ponytail ever. I think the thinness of it was what made Curly Girl fail - it made my hair look limp and underwhelming because there just isn’t enough of it.

I have the same issue with my hair looking nice when I leave the house but going to shit the minute I step outside. Currently trying the Redken stuff that somebody recommended on this thread but the jury’s our so far. It’s made my hair feel nice though.

Colour Wow Dreamcoat is the only thing I’ve had any success with to stop the frizzing. I found it worked brilliantly on warm summer days with a tiny bit of drizzle, but it didn’t do anything in full on foggy/rainy weather and I’ve only had it since the end of August so didn’t get to try it on hot and humid days. I save it for special occasions though because it’s nt cheap and you have to use a lot.

FlamingJuno · 22/11/2018 15:07

Canter Mane and Tail. Horse product but works a treat. It's about £15 a bottle but lasts for years.

Cabochard · 22/11/2018 17:25

Wear a cotton beanie outside especially in damp foggy weather.
This makes a huge difference.
I’ve been using frizz ease since it first hit the shelves in ‘89 / 90. I feel your pain.
I have very wavy 2c hair.
