Drunk Elephant Vit C Serum, The Inkey List or Garden of Wisdom? They all have good reviews. 47yr old combination skin. Thank you 😊

I have done a lot of research on this of late and settled for Melano CC. (GOW was second choice).

TheDeadlineIsFriday · 19/11/2018 20:29

Harvey Nicks sells a great one. It’s in the Environ range and it’s called Evenessence C-Boost Clarifying Cream 25ml £35. Highly recommended.

flintfoxy · 19/11/2018 20:54

Oholy is it the Melanie age spot beauty essence?

Nightlights · 19/11/2018 20:55

I've been using Balance Me and it's good!

XiCi · 19/11/2018 22:22

I liked the Melano CC. Currently using the new Vichy Vit C serum which is very good. Was on offer on Escentual.

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 01:18

The Lixirskin paste

Biologifemini · 20/11/2018 07:01

Keep in mind you need to apply them thinly and evenly
The reason they give a glow is that as they oxidise (quite quickly with water on your skin and heat) they turn an orangey red.
I personally think other more stable antioxidants are probably better value.

CutesyUserName · 20/11/2018 09:56

Going on recommendations on here, if I had the budget, I'd go for the Drunk Elephant but for now am happy with the GOW Vitamin C Serum (also recommended). It's the best I've used so far, and I've tried several over the years.

Lottapianos · 20/11/2018 12:53

'I personally think other more stable antioxidants are probably better value.'

Which would you recommend, Biologi?

Biologifemini · 20/11/2018 13:25

Vitamin E; grape seed oil probably the least irritating
Green and white tea
Resveratrol
Retinol
I don’t have any beef with vit c but I remember from lab work it oxidises in water, room temp and air super fast
I reckon all the positivity is due to the hint of a tiny it provides once applied to skin since it oxidises to orange.
I just think it is fashionable in the way that hyluronic acid is when glycerin or urea will do just the same.

Lottapianos · 20/11/2018 14:42

'I reckon all the positivity is due to the hint of a tiny it provides once applied to skin since it oxidises to orange'

I use mine at night, never in the day time, and have never noticed a change in my skin colour. I have noticed a big impact on my skin's general glowiness though. And yes, you're right about it oxidising in air, and the packaging usually takes that into account (sealed, air tight bottle, opaque packaging, pump bottle)

I love hyaluronic acid too and find it has more of an impact that regular glycerine products

Biologifemini · 20/11/2018 15:25

When I mean oxidising in air I didn’t mean in the packaging.

once vitamin C is applied to your skin then it oxidises quickly due to air, warmth and light - rendering it useless.

As for applying it at night it still results in a glow because oxidation process ‘orange’ colour is the same as many fake tans so it would be seen the next day even after washing.
the colour is actually a skin stain.

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 15:32

I'm as pale as a ghost and I never get a stain of any sort.

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 15:33

The Lixirskin paste is washed off the skin after a few mins so no stain can occur.

Biologifemini · 20/11/2018 15:53

Really interesting discussion.
The orange colour is erythrulose.
If you leave vit c on the skin it will cause a faint orange staining.
The Lixir version sounds interesting as it sounds like a mask.

XiCi · 20/11/2018 15:59

Lol at the thought of usc all walking around orange stained thinking we're glowing Grin
Have to say that I've never experienced this in the years I've been using it. Vit C isn't just fashionable. It's a really effective way to lighten pigmentation and also contains the enzyme tyrosinase, which helps to prevent melanin production. My sun spots have virtually faded to nothing now, something that glycerin or vitamin e cream couldnt help with

Biologifemini · 20/11/2018 16:22

Thanks really interesting
I never said it doesn’t work, but it does oxidise fast - I don’t think many formulations are any good based on the mixture and packaging. As well as the effect of light, heat, water and air once placed on the skin.
Vitamin c inhibits the enzyme tyrosinase hence the effect on melanin production.
I am just repeating basic biochemistry- it doesn’t take anything away from the effects people see.
I just don’t trust something that is so unstable. I think too many companies are exploiting this.

XiCi · 20/11/2018 17:55

Yes you're right. It takes quite a bit of research to find a good vit c serum for all the reasons you mentioned. I think you can make your own serum pretty easily as well if you have the time and inclination. You can get ascorbic acid powder pretty cheap on amazon.

This short reasearch backed article on the excellent benefits of Vitamin C is good: www.paulaschoice.co.uk/how-vitamin-c-helps-your-skin

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/11/2018 21:05

Dr Dray (dermatologist) is a bit meh about vitamin c (on YouTube) for the very reasons outlined; oxidises quickly and most research done in Petri dishes.

That said, I like the timeless one. Supposed to be more stable with ferluic acid and vit e. I'm probably only going to buy my next bottle in the early summer tbh.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/11/2018 21:06

Dr Sam Bunting seems quite positive though. (British dermatologist.)

Both reapply bang on about spf tbh.

Notsureabouthis · 20/11/2018 21:46

I’ve tried a few Vitamin C serums but have noticed a real difference with the DE one. Pricey and makes my oily skin shiny but my skin looks amazing!

ViserionTheDragon · 20/11/2018 22:02

Another vote for the DE serum, my skin looks much brighter and healthier looking.

LadyPamplemousse · 20/11/2018 22:16

The Drunk Elephant prices are too much for me and I can't help but think it's a lot of hype. I bet it takes pennies to make.

Jaffacakebeast · 20/11/2018 22:16

I’m loving this 1 right now, so cheap compared to others! theordinary.com/product/rdn-vitamin-c-suspension-30pct-in-silicone-30ml
Tbh I like a lot of their products
