Baby boy clothes - Help me find some nice ones please?

I am looking for some nice baby clothes for a new arrival. I really like the colour navy blue and wish I could find a plain navy cotton sweater (perhaps a Breton style but in cotton yarn) and some plain navy or ticking stripe or off white soft cotton trousers. I don't like hoodies and I don't much care for those t-shirts with slogans or thomas the tank or whatever. IME there is masses of choice and some lovely stuff around for girls but for baby boys most shops stock layer look t-shirts with slogans (mine's a pint ), hoodies and jeans or combats. Anyone got any good ideas?

babygrows only for the first three months

Jojo and blooming marv have good striped ones

jellybellie · 20/06/2007 13:33

try the White Company - they have quite a nautical theme going on with white and navy for boys this season

incy · 20/06/2007 16:00

Caroline1852 · 20/06/2007 16:06

Also Benetton 0-12, though don't know whether the UK range is as good as in Italy.

Pannacotta · 20/06/2007 22:23

Try POP (Polaren och Pyret), Swedish brand think you can buy on line plus def at House of Frazer. Lots of navy and white stripes/simple styles. Pricey but fab quality, we were given some tops by Swedish friends a year ago and DS1 still wearing them!

I second Pannacotta, POP is lovely, one of my favourites of DS's outfits is from there. Also try www.cowsaysmoo.co.uk/products.php?cat=9 for kidscase clothes which are gorgeous, but pricey

youpeskykids · 20/06/2007 22:58

I shopped in Benetton and H&M for my two DS - I too am not into the slogans or cutesy cuddly motifs (sorry!)

Not sure H&M do baby clothes anymore though - my local store only does from 12 months onwards.

You'll find breton type tops in JoJoMamanBebe (IMO they do really nice stuff for boys).

I noticed in Debenhams they do the Duffer of St George range, I do recall there were some plain/non-motif clothes there, although not sure if they do baby clothes.

Pannacotta · 20/06/2007 23:05

H&M is good for plain non logo things and stripes etc. My local one does baby clothes, just bought some for DS2 including some lovely organic cotton bodies.
And also agree Jojomaman has good boys things, again bit pricey but quliaty usually pretty good.
M&S also has some rather sweet baby and boys things and some Fairtrade boys clothes if that appeals to you...

youpeskykids · 20/06/2007 23:10

Pannacotta - have to go to Bluewater or Lakeside to get H&M baby clothes.....still, worth a trip though!

Pannacotta · 20/06/2007 23:13

mmm H&M prob not THAT good!
But Jojo you can buy online (with mumsnet discount), M&S also on line and think POP too...

Twinklemegan · 20/06/2007 23:17

I found Debenhams pretty good but I have to say I'm not that keen on their stuff at the moment. A favourite for me was playsuits or rompers (long or short legs, no feet) as opposed to sleep suits because they lasted much longer. They're fairly hard to find though.

Caroline1852 · 21/06/2007 10:36

Thank you all for your suggestions.
I have a JoJo Maman Bebe in my local high street and I have bought a few bits from there, trouble is every baby in this town is wearing the same thing!
Does anyone have a website address for POP?

POP
I think they have a real-life shop in Brent Cross

Try also Jako-o

Anna8888 · 21/06/2007 14:09

Petit Bateau
Bonpoint

Anna8888 · 21/06/2007 17:01

Even better - BonTon. I LOVE BonTon, nothing cooler. But you'll need to pop over to Paris I think

Pannacotta · 21/06/2007 17:42

On this theme of bice boys clothes, does anyone know where to find a simple boys cotton sun hat? Mothercare smallest ones way too big for DS2 (5 weeks).

Anna8888 · 21/06/2007 17:46

Pannacotta - Petit Bateau? It's very good for plain and small (all those titchy French babes )

Pannacotta · 21/06/2007 17:48

Thanks but no PB near me, are they on line do you know?

Anna8888 · 21/06/2007 17:54

On line in France, in French.

I just took a look at the on line catalogue, they have a little blue baby sun hat for 10 euros.

Or you could call one of their UK shops and get them to mail it to you?

Caroline1852 · 22/06/2007 10:24

Thanks all. Anyone buying Petit Bateau, Petit Boy or any other French brand - beware the sizing. French babies really must be very much smaller than their British counterparts as I have found to my cost in the past. Are French adults really a lot smaller than British adults or are they just tiny as babies because their mothers drink too much and eat too much unpasterurised cheese?
Oilily - a Dutch make - have some really nice stuff (generously sized) in lovely bright colours.

Yes, French adults are on average a lot smaller than British - I remember reading some statistics a few years back - the difference in height was several cms and French women were on average 7kg lighter than British...

They are often a lot smaller boned/framed.

Caroline1852 · 22/06/2007 11:07

SO if several cms shorter and 7kg lighter than British women they are proportionate - though if smaller boned I suppose they must be fatter.

OP posts:
Anna8888 · 22/06/2007 11:11

They definitely aren't fatter around these parts. Parisians are generally very slim indeed - in fact, I was in Milan a couple of weeks ago and surprised to find the glamorous Milanese women quite a lot juicier than the Parisians.

florenceuk · 22/06/2007 12:01

I hope you are looking at the Boden preview! Personally I found Next and H&M both ok for simple sleepsuits, and M&S and Mothercarefor vests - although I haven't looked at this year's range. I didn't spent a lot on my newborns though!
