Bias Cut Skirts - are they "back"?

So I've seen quite a few midi-length bias cut skirts on Insta recently, usually in satin and/or leopard print. This sort of thing.

I still have a couple in the loft from the last time midi skirts were in, and I was wondering whether I can dig them out? But they are neither satin nor leopard print.

What do we think? Will they get more widespread?

I hope not - I've got a floppy C-Section tum and bias cut skirts show every lump and bump!

GhostCurry · 13/11/2018 13:41

“But they are neither satin nor leopard print.”

What are they?

I think not satin is a good thing tbh, as above it’s rather too clingy for most of us.

Well I've been wearing my very old silk bias cut midi since the summer so I say yes. And midi skirts are generally fashionable so if you still like them when you get them oyt then yes, wear them.

fashiondevotee · 13/11/2018 20:49

Yes, bias-cut skirts are v. on-trend for this season! I'm wearing mine with thick-knit jumpers and trainers or loafers. :)

Can anyone tell me what a bias cut is please? I've googled images, read descriptions and watched sewing programmes on bias cut but still I'm not sure!

Woven fabric has the warp and the weft, threads that run up and down as well as threads that run left and right. If you cut out pieces for a dress or skirt on the diagonal instead of at right angles, it's called 'on the bias' and helps the fabric mould to the body more smoothly. You can easily create flare and skim without having to cut out as many pieces, so fewer seams.

Oh I loved them last time round but I got rid of them all. Yes I did, not because I didn't think they would come back but because these days they make my arse look bigger than China. So wear it for me, op.

Don't they use a lot of fabric though? I'd be pleasantly surprised if the cheap and cheerful high street catches on.

Mumsnut · 14/11/2018 11:26

To be worn with a huge chunky jumper apparently, so don't worry about lumps and bumps.

CointreauVersial · 14/11/2018 12:50

Bad form....start a thread, then abandon it for 24 hours.....Blush - anyway, thanks, oh stylish ones. General consensus seems to be that I can wear my skirts without looking like I just stepped out of 2001, although I'd feel better about it if I saw more of them out on the streets.

One of my "loft" skirts is floral print (but not in a good way), but the other is a soft burgundy/purple check, so hopefully will pass as on trend. It's slightly thicker and more forgiving than satin. But YY to wearing with chunky jumpers and trainers.

Bias cut satin is the work of the devil unless you are seriously willowy and toned.

Every lump and bump is magnified and emphasised, and I speak from bitter experience here.

I suppose a big chinky jumper may work, as opposed to the velvet trimmed cardies last time around.

sollyfromsurrey · 14/11/2018 13:27

Seriously, wear what you want. Add some on trend items to the outfit if you so desperately need to feel 'in' but don't not wear something you love with some irrational fear that it is not 'in'. The coolest people wear what they love not follow trends.

lurkingfromhome · 14/11/2018 13:46

There is a beautiful leopard one on ASOS I have had my eye on, but so does everyone else, I suspect, as it sells out 5 minutes after it comes back into stock every time. And yes, I have the chunky jumpers lined up to wear with it if I ever get my hands on one.

CointreauVersial · 15/11/2018 13:33

Solly, I don't "desperately need to feel 'in'", but I do quite like to follow fashion. This shouldn't be a surprise, as I'm posting on the Style & beauty boards.

Otherwise we'd all be in leggings and fleeces.

Oh dear, yet another resurrected 90s trend that made me look like I was entirely composed of arse...

I agree with pp that they are very unforgiving on anyone with any lumps and bumps but if you can carry it off, then go for it. I made a bias cut skirt once when I a) was thinner and b) could be bothered with dressmaking, and I had to buy twice as much fabric as I would have done for a normal skirt. It was very wasteful, so as floisme says, I would be surprised if the trend took off in a big way or was especially prevalent in the cheaper shops.
