De-scruffing him indoors. Any advice?

I could weep. He is tall, has a great physique, broad shoulders, long legs BUT he wears oversized, baggy clothes and looks constantly scruffy. I'm trying to persuade him to wear slimmer fitting clothes but he aint having it. So I'm thinking let's go to one good department store or menswear shop and let them weave some magic. Can anyone suggest the best place for this transformation to take place. Thanks in advance.

If he's anything like my DH he won;t set foot in a shop unless forced at gunpoint. I end up buying stuff or he'll do a smash and grab raid and end up with bright shirts and polo necks (bleurgh)

specialmagiclady · 19/06/2007 21:23

That Selfridges is magic. Can I suggest vouchers? That way he'll be forced to actually go in and shop.

Alternatively, why not try somewhere cheap like H&M where he can experiment with looks without blowing the budget. He may feel that if he dresses differently, he won't look like himself.

Croaky · 19/06/2007 21:24

Well yeah Effie he is. He says he's into clothes and style but the reality seems startlingly different. If we go into a shop together and I start suggesting various stuff - he just gets really grumpy and heads for a rail of polyester half priced triple XL tee shirts.

Most of the big department stores have personal shoppers, but I'm not sure if any 'specialise' in men, so to speak. I've been to the one at Debenhams for me, and with my mum, and it was a great experience both times - they dash off round the shop and get all the stuff for you, which might well appeal to a man - he can just sit around and wait for things to be brought to him, and might take advice from a stranger where he might be more resistant to taking it from you.

willywonka · 19/06/2007 21:29

I've only heard good things about Debenhams personal shopper service - incl. that they're not pushing you into buying what you don't want/need, however I only know of women who have used it. Assuming that they also provide this service for men, it would entail much less effort for both of you and you'd have the pick of several franchises. It might help him to hear the opinions of someone else too, especially when able to compare several outfits. Good luck!!

Sorry JN, was distracted by The F Word so ended up repeating exactly what you said !

EffiePerine · 19/06/2007 21:32

Hmm, if I suggested a personal shopper to DH he's think I wsas going mad. What about the other extreme: buying stuff online (in the right size)?

Croaky · 19/06/2007 21:36

Personally am LOVING the idea of a personal shopper purely for the reasons you have all mentioned namely that he is resistent to my suggestions. But I have mentioned this before and he reacted v.negatively. He thinks it's gonna be a total hard sell. So how 'selly' is the whole experience - can any of you tell me? I know about the Debenhams one but do any other shops do this out of interest?

Would it be a bad thing for him to think you're mad? Could he indulge you, just this once?

JackieNo · 19/06/2007 21:37

Worth a try. Then he wouldn't have any choice in what to try on, although I guess he might refuse to try things on at all.

JackieNo · 19/06/2007 21:39

(sorry - the 'worth a try' was to the idea of getting stuff online).

I think most of the big department stores do it. John Lewis, Selfridges, as specialmagiclady said, and Debenhams. Definitely no hard sell.

Croaky · 19/06/2007 22:10

Right thank you all for help. I'm gonna try now and persuade him that he needs a personal shopper. Wish me luck. Will report back.

He said yes! It was that easy. I'm booking the appointment in the morning. Thanks all.
