So I will start a new job in a few weeks and need to look more together. Have new and improved hair and clothes but I have awful oily skin that make up slides off on the T zone. What can I use, I touch up usually but won’t have time too. Tried Dohbke wear but looked ill, tried the lighter version which I liked but it still melted off!
Help me look stylish and less oily please! I have tried two anti shine primers - rubbish and made me worse and use Lily Lolo usually, if anything can magically make my pores shrink then that’s great too. I am heading towards 50 and do have mega crinkly eyes but they seem reasonable - the teenage greasy nose less so!

Bump to help your thread!

taybert · 11/11/2018 18:53

I wish I knew the answer, also bumping! I do find if I use a setting spray I seem to have more make up remaining at the end of the day than I usually would. I’m still a greaseball though.

Dowdydoes · 11/11/2018 19:15

Thanks missmouse and yup Taybert - it’s pants isn’t it!!

Someone must know an answer...

Blotting papers on face very hour. Nothing else works sorry

SauvingnonBlanketyBlanc · 12/11/2018 10:58

Primer definitely,it stops make up from sliding and reduces appearance of shine and pores.Apply before foundation

Spartacunt · 12/11/2018 11:00

Charcoal face wash in the morning then primer and a lightish matte foundation (givenchy blurring foundation is good) then a matte pressed powder (Clinique do a good one for oily skin). Blotting as necessary.

OHolyNightOwl · 12/11/2018 12:15

Paula's Choice does good products for all skin types, might be worth a try? I love the BHA gel.
ELF setting spray is great and they do a matte version as well.

Tetrapanex · 12/11/2018 12:34

I have the same sort of skin and I couldn’t get along with double wear either. About 6 months ago I started to use a mud/clay or charcoal based face mask three times a week religiously. Nothing fancy - at the moment I’m using a Lacura charcoal one from Aldi and previously I used an N-Spa one from Asda. I apply a thin layer using an old foundation brush. My skin has really improved and is much less oily.

For foundation, I use Revlon Colourstay - the one for oily/combination skin. Apply a thin layer using a beauty blender sponge. Then an additional thin layer over my t zone and where I get most shiny.

I then set it using a dry beauty blender dipped in translucent powder. (Good results with the Collection one that has Witchhazel in it, think it is called something like Primed & Ready powder). I pack on quite a lot of powder into oily areas. So much so that it’s visible sitting on the skin. I then do the rest of my makeup, hair, get dressed etc. Then just before I am ready to leave, I take a big fluffy powder brush and brush off all of the excess. I find it leaves a really nice finish if it’s been left to sit for around 10 to 15 minutes. My skin looks the best it has looked in years and these products are all cheap drugstore ones as an added bonus.

Just don’t forget to brush off the excess powder before you leave the house Grin

Tetrapanex · 12/11/2018 12:36

Also forgot to mention - I’ve tried many primers over the years but never found one that didn’t leave me looking an oily mess so I just skip that stage.

BagelGoesWalking · 12/11/2018 13:04

You don't want to do too much before a new job but there are a few things you could try.

Azelaic Acid Serum - can help oily skin (also texture, acne etc). This one is silicone free.

Niacinamide - this is for oil control -suits some ppl but makes other react badly (spots, irritation, whiteheads) so suggest you leave it til later and patch test rigorously.

Use gentle non foaming cleansers that don't strip your skin. Try an oil at night, even though it sounds crazy it does help many. Also, hydrate your skin with a hydrating toner - a lot of oil production is because your skin is actually dehydrated. Choose a toner without witch hazel, perfume, look for Hyaluronic Acid, glycerin or panthenol. Put a moisturiser on top to seal in the moisture.

JanetLovesJason · 12/11/2018 14:17

I use the GOW Azelaic serum and it’s pretty good. Can cause some piling though if you wear it under make-up.

Dowdydoes · 12/11/2018 19:19

Ooooh thank you for the recommendations - from this I can see already I will try everything at once, turn purple and peel then go off on the first day with a layer of powder still all visible😂

Am off to have a little shop - when I was younger I thought a benefit of being older would be good skin but it turns out you just wrinkle round your still oily t zone. Maybe no more!!

A good long-stay foundation (Mac Pro Longwear is my hero).
Take blotting paper to work
then a little translucent powder.

I avoid layers of products. Primers don't work for me and my oily skin. It just seems to make a more solid layer to slide off and it clogs my pores. Less is more.

hollieberrie · 12/11/2018 19:58

OP this was me until is started using Niacinamide - I use The Ordinary brand, morning and evening. I havent had any problems with it.

Other things i do are: I never moisturise (my skin just doesnt need it) and i use Double Wear and powder over the top.

I touch up a couple of times through the day with a powder compact.

Soooooo much better now than before i started with the Niacinamide.

Imaghosthowareyoooooo · 12/11/2018 20:16

A make up artist told me not to spend £ on blotting papers but just use loo roll instead. Just fold over and gently pat over your face. I've followed this tip and it works really well.

JellycatElfie · 12/11/2018 20:19

Are you using a good skincare regime? You need a decent but gentle face wash, use a little toner and then moisturise! You need to use a good moisturiser to calm your skin down and not encourage it to go more oily. Then a good foundation (stay matte by no7 is my choice) with a teeny tiny bit of loose powder: don’t keep plotting your skin or applying more powder, your skin will not thank you for clogging it!

Carpetglasssofa · 12/11/2018 20:21

Retinoid/retinol is a godsend for the oily-pelted among us. Everyone else may be fretting about how it dries them out and they need moisturiser, but for the first time since I was 10 I can get away with blotting my face once a day.

Carpetglasssofa · 12/11/2018 20:22

You need a sunscreen with it though

fruitshot · 12/11/2018 20:27

Skin produces oil because it thinks it's lacking moisture.
You need to trick or by using oil in your skin care routine.

I would make sure your basic skin care is solid. Decent non foaming cleanser, eye cream, decent moisturiser or oil. Rosehip oil has worked wonders in my routine.

WednesdaySpinner · 12/11/2018 20:46

I have the same problem and have found that using oil control lotion by Mac and then smashbox light photofinish primer under foundation really helps. Mac do free samples and so you can try the oil control lotion before you buy to make sure that it works

WednesdaySpinner · 12/11/2018 20:49

@carpetglasssofa may I ask which product you use please? I have been thinking of using a retinol serum to help with both fine lines in my forehead and my oily skin and think I have narrowed it down to two potentials!

FloofyDoof · 12/11/2018 23:26

Paula's choice BHA, a niacinamide serum, a light hyaluronic acid serum/essence as excessive greasiness can be caused by dehydrated skin, and La Roche Posay Serozinc spray.

Dowdydoes · 15/11/2018 21:47

Hmmm jellycat does super hot bath soaking and a rub with a flannel count as good cleansing? I have before and I do moisturise but really I am rubbish. Am just about to order some stuff and it will be a whole new me;)
