Can’t keep Shellac nails on

TapStepBallChange · 10/11/2018 12:24

I thought I would start getting my nails looked after, so I started getting shellac done fortnightly, I use a lovely lady from the next village who has set up a mobile nails business. But I don’t seem to be able to keep them on. I’m trying not to fiddle or chip them, but they start falling off within a week. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong, I’ve tried using the cuticle oil she gave me daily, not using cuticle oil. I’m not in a manual job. Are my nails just not suited for them? I’m tempted to give up and go back to my rubbish nails, but not sure if I’m missing any care tips

Maybe it’s a problem with her application or products?

Try a different place and see if you get on better

Mrskeats · 10/11/2018 12:28

I don’t get on with them either. I’ve gone back to acrylic

VictoriaBun · 10/11/2018 12:32

I'd also suggest it was due to application. Go to a salon and have it done by them so you have a comparison.

bruffin · 10/11/2018 12:33

Try gels instead. Mine last weeks

FortyFacedFuckers · 10/11/2018 12:34

I would definitely try somewhere else, I recently went 5 weeks between getting mine done and they were still perfect apart from the 5 weeks growth!

thinkingcapon · 10/11/2018 12:35

You may well have particularly oily nails, like me. I ask for double base coat but even then only get a week maybe 10 days max x

TruffleShuffles · 10/11/2018 12:56

I would try somewhere else. Is she actually using CND shellac products? I’ve noticed a lot of people I’m friends with on Facebook have started doing mobile nails and are using the products you can buy off amazon which I’ve tried myself and can’t get them to stay on for more than a couple of days. Some salons I’ve tried I can get them to last a couple of weeks before they start chipping but the last salon I found who I have now been using over a year can last as long as I want them too. I managed to keep a pair in perfect condition for over six weeks as I went away with them on and didn’t want to ruin my nails by trying to remove them myself. Application and using quality products really makes a difference.

TapStepBallChange · 10/11/2018 13:27

I thunk I’m going to have to admit it’s the application. I just didn’t want to as I like the lady and it’s so handy having her come to the house, but it is a waste of money at the moment. I’m not quite sure what she’s using, I’m not sure how I’d spot the difference as I don’t know much about it

I have OPI gels for about 30 months non stop. As soon as one set grows out I have them soaked off and the next set applied. About 5 months ago I had the same problem when the central nails were lifting off within the week. After this happened twice I spoke to the salon about it who told me that the only thing that can make them lift is insufficient curing and that since it was only happening on the middle fingers of each hand maybe a central bulb was failing on the lamp. They said they’d check all the lamps and I haven’t had the problem again. Perhaps your lady doesn’t have the right lamp if it’s happening on all the fingers?

I agree, try somewhere else and see what happens.

PanamaPattie · 10/11/2018 16:51

Does the cuticle oil contain Argan oil? This will lift Shellac. AFAIA, CND won't sell Shellac to just anyone. I believe you need to be a certified nail technician with a "real" business, not a hobby.

proseccoandbooks · 10/11/2018 16:54

Where I go she uses OPI shellac, I love it. I still go once at 2 weeks because I don't like them grown, but they stay on perfectly. I also use the opi cuticle oil every night and it did make a difference

TapStepBallChange · 10/11/2018 17:53

The oil is solar oil by CND. I’ve looked at some pics of Shellac, and hers does look like that. She seems to have lots of other happy customers locally, so might be just me. I’ll just try going somewhere else. Her website says fully qualified and insured, and I know she’s been going on courses to learn other things as well

I have the same problem with Shellac, it lifts and chips on me.

I have swapped to SNS which is absolutely bombproof, easier to remove and apparently better for your nails. I’m a total convert but it is more expensive.

TapStepBallChange · 10/11/2018 18:14

Megan is that at a salon? Will have to find a local one that does it

I hate shellac. I do love gellish. I find shellac are too shiny and peel off tol easily. Gellish are amazing. The women at the nail bar think im mad and keep telling me they are the same. They ARE NOT the fecking same! Try gellish.

RedPandaFluff · 10/11/2018 18:20

There are a couple of things that could prevent the shellac bonding to your nail, @TapStepBallChange. Make sure the therapist wipes your nails with ScrubFresh (a blue liquid from CND - I think it's basically acetone) as this will strip any oil from your nail. Then the base coat needs to completely cover the nail bed (but not any skin) before curing. Then make sure she/he seals the tip (she/he should do a couple of sideways strokes to make sure the shellac covers the edge of the nail). If this is all done properly, and there's nothing wrong with the lamp/bulbs, they shouldn't lift. I love CND shellac - bought all the gear so I could save money by doing it myself 😁

thinkfast · 10/11/2018 18:22

It's probably her application. Some places it just last longer the. Others

MeganChips · 10/11/2018 18:56

TapStepBallChange Yes. I get it done at a salon near work but I leave next week so I’m going to have to find somewhere else.

hendricksy · 11/11/2018 08:47

I have my nails done by a local girl for £10.. they last a month with a little regrowth!!
