Make up for Dd 11.5 ?

Nearlyadoctor · 09/11/2018 17:34

Dd has asked for some make up for Christmas and I wondered if anyone here could recommend brands. I wear mainly Clinique and benefit so obviously a bit expensive to buy for her. She does have a Clinique mascara from a free gift set I had and some very cheap lip gloss from Claire’s. She wants some eyeshadow to try for parties etc. Are there any must have brands at this age?

Take her to Kiko for variety and cheapness. Get her 1 or 2 things from some thing more expensive like MAC, she'd probably love that.

Nearlyadoctor · 09/11/2018 18:06

I’ve never heard of Kiko?? We’re in the south west may not have got this far yet Hmm

Sorry, had to do this - my Dd just 11.5 too. Help her with skincare, looking after herself, maybe tidying brows etc but not makeup yet.

MAC for an 11yo Shock

Superdrug is good prices and not tested on animals.

Nearlyadoctor · 09/11/2018 18:29

@chic we’ve already started with the skincare, face wash etc. There are others wearing makeup to school which she knows is unacceptable but I’m happy with a bit of mascara and eyeshadow for Christmas parties etc. Also others are experimenting at home and she wants to do the same, I don’t have an issue with it but obviously at 45 am a bit out of touch with the ‘in’ brands.

Thanks @Loopy

Make Up Revolution is excellent - really good quality but not at all expensive which means it's great for experimenting with. And there are a million YouTube videos to help.

I found some of it so good that I now use a few of their products myself. They often do dupes of expensive brands - my NARs blusher has been replaced by a £3 Revolution product, I honestly couldn't tell the difference.

molinski · 09/11/2018 18:37

@Nearlyadoctor hey I am really into makeup and could give loads of recommendations but seeing as she is still experimenting and won't be in use all that often I would suggest all high street in boots/Superdrug. Revolution, Collection and Rimmel are my favourites and all do some good eyeshadow pallettes etc for a good price that aren't really poor quality. Hope that helps

MUA from Superdrug (current sale on so really cheap). If she wants something 'fancy' for a Christmas stocking filler Kylie lipgloss is popular with teens but not cheap.

KnickerBockerGlooooory · 09/11/2018 19:08

Superdrug is a good shout. My 12 yo is make up obsessed and last Xmas asked for a Naked palette! Which my SIL bought her. She spends her own money in Superdrug. Nanny bought her a quality brush set.

Racecardriver · 09/11/2018 19:13

Beauty pie lip oil is cheap, v v good quality, ageappropriate and, actually good for her lips. Re the mascara please make sure she is removing it properly and teach her to check the best before dates (my mother never did, result wasn’t good).

beckslovestimmy · 09/11/2018 19:15

Not sure where in the south west you are but there is a KiKo in Exeter. Superdrug and boots have some cheaper brands that would be good for her to try out. Also I like E.L.F online, really cheap lots of products, sometimes a free gift too.

fashiondevotee · 09/11/2018 19:41

Superdrug for day-to-day stuff. I'd recommend Makeup Revolution (cheap, good quality, bright colours for parties) or E.L.F. (great quality, good ingredients and more about the natural look).

Treat-wise, I'd get her a mini Urban Decay Naked palette (the ones that have 5 or 6 shades rather than 12) or something from Fenty (Rihanna's makeup brand, really nice stuff, you can get it at Harvey Nichols online and instore).

Nearlyadoctor · 09/11/2018 19:43

becks we’re not far from Exeter actually - that’s possibly the new shop in Princesshay someone was talking about, only been open about 6 weeks. I’ll double check. Thanks

Race yes she’s taking it off properly ( using my Clinique ) it’s something I’m very vigilant about.

Thank you for all the Superdrug recommendations I’ll have a look.

molinski you say you’re really into make up, can I ask your opinion on Charlotte Tilbury - not for Dd but for me. A friend has recommended it , also had another recommendation for Hourglass ambient lighting highlighter - never used a highlighter before, just Clinique double facebase powder and blusher. Am I missing something here? Should I be using a highlighter as well?

If you wanted a kit qvc do nice tarte or laura geller kits. Too faced have some gorgeous eyeshadows but maybe pricey. Revolution or other brands in superdrug are a good starter

molinski · 09/11/2018 20:23

@Nearlyadoctor I love makeup! Haven't got an awful lot from Charlotte tilbury, i have some eyeshadow palettes but I mainly admire from afar! Just because of the price. Recently finished a 2 yr long renovation project on my first house which ate all my money! Only 24 so not earning the big bucks yet lol. Have heard great things about ambient light palette but again don't own it. Highlighter is a must for me lol. MAC soft and gentle is a holy grail which finishes my makeup off perfectly. Also like benefit highlighters and iconic London are lush too.
