Long fine hair - need style help please

Since becoming a SAHM I have let my fine hair grow long and it’s now bra band length with a straight fringe. I just put it up in a clip or ponytail everyday - even going out, I clip it up. Wearing it down makes my (already jowly) face look worse.

I don’t have a good hairdresser any more - our local salon didn’t even make a good job of my fringe last time I popped in, so I’ve been trimming it myself for about a year.

I’m going to have to get it chopped, aren’t I? Any recs for styles please (or good but not too pricey hairdressers in Warrington). Grin

I don’t always have the time or energy to style my hair, but my hair always used to look nice and healthy and now it just looks blah. I am also overweight, but I figure my hair can be fixed relatively easily and it might make me feel better about myself.

How about having it cut to shoulder length, just a blunt cut, it'll look thicker, and maybe have it shaped at the sides. You could add some high lights or low lights. I wouldn't do anything too drastic, like layering it through. You'll still be able to put it up, but if you do the above, it'll give you a lift, and look more interesting.

What’s the difference between shaping and layering? Blush

I’ve always had layers round my face before I started growing my hair out.

Layers make fine hair look even thinner. Which ever length you go for it needs to be a blunt cut.

I have similarly fine hair and have been advised by good hairdressers that keeping it to shoulder length with a blunt cut makes it look fullest. Also looks a bit more modern.

I likewise wear mine up most of the time - day 2 with dry shampoo and a bit of backcombing at the roots is the most flattering and very easy to add a bit of volume - which is more flattering if you're a bit bigger than you want to be :-) It usually looks better like that than when I bother to wash and blow-dry, unless I really have time to style it properly

Thanks, all. Just need to find a decent hairdresser now. Grin

Oh, this thread is timely. I've got mega thin, fine, long-bob hair that I'm trying to grow longer (but it looks so straggly, despite getting it trimmed every 6-8 weeks Sad).

I have a hair appointment on Friday morning and was going to ask for layers as thought it would add depth and volume...does it really do the opposite?! What's a blunt cut please?

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 15/11/2018 08:55

A blunt cut, is just a straight chop, no layering, and no cutting into the hair. Don't get your hair layered OP, the find ends will still break. I would get two or three inches taken off, it will definitely look thicker, or add high/low lights.

Plait it.

Learn to to do a french braid down the back of your head or 2 on either side, that way you can sleep with it that way and it looks the same in the morning. It's what I do. I taught myself years ago and it does make your arm ache at first Grin but its worth it. You just grab a bit of hair from each side as you do a normal plait going down.

@TantricTwist that looks fab but I have a fraction of her hair! Mine is so thin/fine and not much of it that when I put mine up in a pony tail you can pretty much see my scalp Sad I'm in my 30's and would love to have long hair again, but it gets so straggly past shoulder length.

Think I've decided to get mine cut into a bob again tomorrow!

SatsumaFan · 15/11/2018 17:35

See, it says on this website to layer your hair if it's thin?! Which is what I've been told by hairdressers in the past. So confused Confused

Shoulder length will definitely make it feel and look thicker. I had mine cut a few weeks ago and it looks so much healthier.
Shaping means cutting into it at the ends so it hangs nicely iyswim. You shouldn't really be able to see it as part of the style. Layers are cut higher up the hair shaft and are more noticeable.

VanGoghsDog · 15/11/2018 18:25

Thin bobbed hair here. Layers are the work of the devil. I've been trying all year to grow out some that an useless hairdresser cut in back in April.
They just make it all flyaway and silly looking.

Those photos have loads of product in and the second one has a natural wave. My hair is poker straight. Except when I want it to be. Obvs.

Fortheloveofscience · 15/11/2018 18:31

What brilliant timing. I have very fine, poker-straight hair, used to have quite a lot of it and wear it long but it’s been falling out and is a lot thinner. I’m booked into a stylist tomorrow, and was going to go for a long bob but I’m worried I’ll just look like a puff ball.
