Help me with hair colour. Fed up with brassy blonde and stripey highlights

I've recently changed hairdressers because I wasn't happy with the way my hair was being cut and coloured. Now I am happy with the cut but still not happy with the way it is coloured and wonder if it is me and what I am asking for.

I was mousey brown/ash blonde when I was younger and now my natural colour is a darker brown. I have bits of white grey around my temple area but not yet grey roots that are visible. For the purposes of ease, I would like my hair close to my natural colour but with some colour in it to break it up. I always seem to get foils with a golden blonde and a warm brown put through and when I've been in the sun, I lose the definition of the colours and end up with a sheet of blonde hair and obvious roots.

I'm in my 40s and think if I just had my natural brown hair colour it would wash me out and I need something near my face to lift it. Probably the caramel/golden blonde does suit my face colour, but I just hate having so much of it in my hair and don't know what to ask for so I don't get millions of foils and the very fake contrasting colour.

I am sure this question has been asked a million times already so thank you in advance if you take the time to reply.

Balayage would give you a more natural look and get rid of the obvious roots.

What is your skin tone like? Pinker or yellower or olive or beige/neutral? If you were naturally ashy younger do you think you suit cooler tones? Highlights shouldnt be stripey, regardless.

My hair is ombre. When I was younger my hair was very blonde naturally, over the years it darkened to caramel.

As I like blonde but don't want the roots showing through all the time my roots are coloured as close to my natural colour as possible and covers my greys. Then it is graduated into a warmer blonde, then a much lighter blonde at the ends.

You can have foils of lighter colour put through but it should never be that obvious, highlights and lowlights should look natural not stripes of colour.

Pinterest/google is a great place to start to see what you want and what to show your hairdresser. It is hard to describe hair colours so pictures are best.

My hairdresser comes to my house so is much cheaper than going to a salon.

My skin tone is more pink

Op I could have written your post, I don't have an answer!, next time I go im going to be blunt. Its their last chance before I move on. Again!

Do you find that they want to put 'clean' blondes in ie white which now im 40 makes me look 10 years older, makes me look grey and ageing. Im not even grey yet! And I don't want yellow either! I've. Compiled an Pinterest page to show them what I mean so will see what happens. I specifically said no white blonde, and that's what I got! The colourist was flummoxed, God knows why?!

LockedOutOfMN · 05/11/2018 18:46

Root stretch and balayage for a more natural look. Agree with the pps who suggested checking Pinterest so you can take some photos of what you're after.

If you know someone who has good hair colour, ask them where they get it done, and call up to see if they will give you a consultation.

I could have written this so am following with interest. Exactly one year ago I decided to stop the dye completely do now only have the fake blonde ends which should take one or two cuts to remove. My hair has come through much more brown in places than ever in the past but the top is quite blonde, naturally, I think I ended up dying my hair back to its natural colour the end,..

SarahBeeney · 05/11/2018 23:44

I also could have written your post!
However,I showed lots of ombré/Balyage pictures to my hairdresser and he said it would take a long time and a lot of work to get my hair like the pics. For example, they are actually dyed all over and then ombred after on the ends. It just looked like natural grow out to me!
So,you could try growing your hair out a bit and see how you get on! I started to try it but my hair is so mousy and dull that it just looked lank and greasy. Back to full highlights for me which will be easier to hide greys in the future I guess.

Thanks everyone. I showed my hairdresser some Pinterest photos. She was already looking at my hair and suggesting we put some cooler colour in and she changed the lighter colour and brown colour to Ash shades and put less light in. I will have to see how it grows out but I am pleased so far. She did mention balayage to the trainee when in conversation so at least now I know she does that and I know how to pronounce it should I prefer that next time it is coloured.

Try a purple shampoo to reduce brassiness, but ultimately you just need a good colourist...
