Where to buy a decent quality leather handbag these days?

Used to love Mulberry but think they’re really overpriced now and the quality isn’t as good - and don’t have that money to spend anymore!

Looking for a decent quality leather every day handbag - in a bit of a sucker for cross bodies but if they’re not cross body I like a strap big enough to go over the shoulder, none of this crook of the arm business!

Really don’t love Michael Kors and tbh doesn’t need to be a “brand” as such just after the quality!

@AnnaMagnani
What’s is the factory store? I’m not far from Bedfordshire.
Thanks

Strathberry or Russell and Bromley

ProseccoThyme · 04/11/2018 21:29

I usually use Paul Costello bags. They can be bought from the website or TK Maxx. Always good quality.

tompointer · 04/11/2018 21:45

Have a look at Modalu. I've bought a couple from there recently and I love them.
They have a 'last chance' sale section full of absolute bargains.

PouchofDouglas · 04/11/2018 21:46

Not radley naff. I love the star one in mint velvet

CocteauTwin · 04/11/2018 21:55

If you don't care about brands then I'd recommend the great leather cross body bag I recently got in Costco for £24. The brand is Lodis, an American one I believe. It's fantastic quality, I liked it so much I went back and got another.

AnnaMagnani · 05/11/2018 08:22

It's a village called Lavendon just off the A428. (Actually Buckinghamshire, oops but it isn't far from Bedford)

If you sign up to the newsletter on the website, it tells you when the sales are. They have reductions of random stuff but also 10% off everything.

BertrandRussell · 05/11/2018 08:27

I'm in the process of buying myself this In the process because I want a few modifications and they are being incredibly helpful. My friend has one of their other bags and it's lovely.

Bluelady · 05/11/2018 09:43

I used to be a Mulberry girl too but the prices have risen and the quality has fallen. I looked at Cambridge Satchels new totes the other day, they look as if they're great quality, the shape is very Mulberrry-esque and they cost £245. That's my next bag.

QueenoftheNights · 05/11/2018 10:34

Coach
Modalu
Boden (maybe but not a huge choice.)
Kate Spade

championquartz · 05/11/2018 11:51

Bertrand I love the look of your bag. The Nell Harper one. The bag is black, is it? The strap is the only part that has a choice of colour? Looks lovely.
I've spent a few minutes browsing through all the bags here. Some lovely ones. I also resent the astronomical prices of a 'name' bag.

PouchofDouglas is this the Mint Velvet one? Handy cross body one. Dressy-ish too.

championquartz · 05/11/2018 12:00

Got distracted and forgot to add - Massimo have some decent bags this season. Decent enough quality as far as I can tell.
Here

Abra1de · 05/11/2018 12:01

Demellier are good.

Also Leo et Violette.

SatsumaFan · 05/11/2018 12:06

Love my bargain Fossil cross body brown leather bag. Picked it up in TK Maxx about a year ago and still looks new despite daily use.

championquartz · 05/11/2018 12:07

This is v nice irl. Cross body too.

They had a cute belt bag/bumbag too - I know I know we said we'd never go there again - but it was cute, honestly. I can't see it online today.

Hersetta427 · 05/11/2018 13:54

Modalu bags are fantastic quality. English made and last fantastical. They have great sales.

grownup2 · 05/11/2018 14:27

Thanks for the tip about Nell Harper bags BertrandRussell! I've just ordered a small crossbody bag - so beautifully designed from one piece of quality leather. Price very fair I think. Frustrating how hard it is to find really well designed pieces from small companies without bumping into them randomly here.

BertrandRussell · 05/11/2018 14:38

"Bertrand I love the look of your bag. The Nell Harper one. The bag is black, is it?"
Mine's going to be brown-they call it whiskey-with a matching strap. I want a bigger inside pocket and possibly a zip and another inside pocket-they are just pricing those for me now. I am very excited!

championquartz · 05/11/2018 15:21

That sounds like excellent service, Betrand. Really like the bag.
Hmmm. Christmas is coming.....

Sexnotgender · 05/11/2018 15:32

New Mulberry is crap. I’ve got loads of older ones but refuse to buy new stuff!

MBMJ leather is lovely as is Kate Spade and Coach.

TapStepBallChange · 05/11/2018 16:01

I have a cross body from Fat Face that is lovely quality.

My day to day leather tote was from L K bennet, it’s so good I’m thinking about buying another (and I could by 4 for the price of the mulberry I was looking at)

elfofftheshelf · 05/11/2018 16:44

Hill and Friends (established by ex- Mulberry team). You can see the Mulberry styling, but the bags are ethically made and the craftsmanship is excellent (much more like Mulberry in the old days). Styles are fresh and fun.

GrimDamnFanjo · 05/11/2018 20:48

I'm a big fan of Shona Easton's fairtrade leather bags. My go to tote is the Nicky www.eastondesignstudio.com/shoulder-bags-shopping-blackturq-nicky-square-shopper-2255-prod.aspx

Kaybush · 05/11/2018 22:32

My DH and I spent a whole day looking for a bag for me at Christmas two years ago and ended up with a lovely one from Jigsaw which has hardly aged.

I've bought two from All Saints since but ended up returning both - they looked great but were too heavy and not practical.

AVeryHappyCamper · 06/11/2018 07:41

My absolute go-to is Village England - just gorgeous leathers. Lots of friends seem to be carrying Fossil bags lately and I must say they are lovely!
