Going grey hair but a bit of a face refresh..could this be a look?

Inspired by the likes of that lovely fashion editor lady whose name I have temporarily forgotten, I am considering a new beauty approach to my middle years. Planning to grow out my grey but simultaneously considering plumping and smoothing my sorry looking face with a touch of injectable stuff (not saying that the fashion lady has done this, just that its my plan). I don't want to look younger, just less tired and sad. I am envisaging chic red lipstick, stylish salt and pepper hair and just a tiny bit of a fresher happier look.
I feel that dyed hair on a weary looking face is less flattering than natural hair with a chirpier face somehow. Could this work? Anyone tried the same sort of route?

Like anna wintour? Iris apfel?
I know what you mean though. The colour of hair could age the skin whereas grey hair could make skin look vibrant. I think u have to have a great cut. Wear make up, small pair of earrings so that you look groomed. Finished. Like its a good look if it is a conscious style choice but not if it's just apathy. The details show which it is though.

I'm going grey gracefully but aware that I need to take greater care of my skin and keep that looking good. Suddenly a bit crepey and more eye wrinkles after this pregnancy and being 41.

Sadly I've never got on with red lipstick as have freckles and rosy cheeks. But I'm focusing on eyes and healthy glow.

WipsGlitter · 04/11/2018 08:17

Alexandra Shulman?

I definitely think you need to be careful with colour as you get older. Cheap box dyes look the worst.

littleredlipstick · 04/11/2018 08:56

I did this - stopped colouring my hair it's grey and in a longer style pixie cut. I had a bad time with my skin went really red, dehydrated and inflamed a few years ago so did a refresh of products and now my skin is great. I use IT cosmetics cc cream use their tight line mascara a bit of a nude/pink based eye shadow and red lips.
Like a PP wear a small pair of earrings to finish off.

Anna Murphy?

Sounds like a good plan to me. As well as filler drink lots of water and use hyaluronic acid (NIOD do a good one), and make sure you go somewhere reputable for the injectables......
It's so expensive having hair highlighted professionally that stopping that will help offset the cost of any face tweaking!

MsMightyTitanAndHerTroubadours · 04/11/2018 09:13

well, I stopped bleaching and dying my hair a good few years ago and the grey is coming in nicely...bit of a silver streak at the front which I like

I have also found that red lipstick is good, when I never really used to be able to carry it off. Not sure if I am kidding myself or just embracing the red, but I am loving it.

JungDisciple · 04/11/2018 09:49

I agree about the red lipstick. Hard to pick a good shade, but when i wear it I feel it makes me less invisible. It makes the pulled together look less apologetic for being older 🤣😂 More of a 'yes im older and still on the front row 😎😍 not fading away, owing my age.
Do I sound crazy 😑😑😐

I went grey and it looked shit. Doing the whole groomed/red lipstick thing to offset the hair depends on your lifestyle IMO. I would've looked faintly ridiculous pairing that with an anorak and hiking boots for walking the dog, for example.

ElfrideSwancourt · 04/11/2018 10:12

I'm growing out the grey too - decision was made when I realised that I was bleaching my hair and then dyeing it grey-purple but actually I don't need to bleach because my hair is now almost completely silver so only need the purple.

I haven't bleached it for about 3 months now and the roots aren't noticeable at all.

I do always wear some makeup - red lipstick doesn't suit me but never leave the house without some pink sparkly lip gloss.

I stopped dyeing my hair 3 years ago and let my grey come through as well as gold tones (which was a pleasent surprise). I have a light grey streak at the front with salt and pepper at the back. My eye brows are still very dark and my skin has never really needed any treatments above moisturising and i use very little make up, just eyeliner, mascara and sometimes lipstick. People assume that i have dyed my hair with grey/silver rather than it being natural, which amuses me.

Since going natural grey it has for me highlighted the amount of women my age 45, that dye their hair. The hair dye industry is huge, the pressure for women to hide the aging process is even bigger. I have had women asking me if my hair is natural, usually followed by, how did i find the transition from dyeing to going grey.

I dress with lots of colour and have my own 'style' so that their is no way that i am invisable.

NeurotrashWarrior · 04/11/2018 19:25

I'd used henna since my 20s (lush) and it did cover the greys but hairdressers won't touch it so I decided to stop and make a decision to either stay grey (early stages really) or professional dye.

However, since I've been freaking out about crows feet I've decided to cut my own hair, not colour and spend the cash on face creams and minimal makeup

Ok, so grexit not going quite as planned. Nasty yellow tinge to the grey...I am going to get some silver shampoos and see what it looks like....

VanillaSugary · 20/11/2018 06:42

Tesco sell the silver shampoo but apparently you shouldn't use it too often as it's quite harsh on the hair.

SureIusedtobetaller · 20/11/2018 06:48

There’s a facebook group, gray and proud- lots of advice and products on there. Lots of pictures for inspiration too.
Grombre on instagram is good too.
I can’t do red lips as my lips are not a good shape but it’s a great look. I think grey hair and lovely skin is a beautiful combination.

NeurotrashWarrior · 20/11/2018 09:50

Grexit!

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 20/11/2018 09:58

I think it partly depends on your age - if you are 57 then it is much easier to pull off this look successfully than if you are 37 and greying early. It also depends on colouring - warm skin tones and dark eyes really help, whereas pale skin and light eyes dont.

Also, how good will you be at maintaining the whole plump and glowing thing? However good my intentions, I know I would lapse, and then have tired dull skin to go with my salt and pepper hair...

HappyGoodHairBear · 20/11/2018 10:22

I’m early forties and been covering grey for a couple of years. Sometimes highlights/lowlights but that got too light for my skin tone so went back to my natural colour recently (dark brown).

Notice my root regrow this grey more since doing this, but that’s actually a good thing because I’ve noticed the way my hair is going grey is actually pretty nice so it’s encouraging me to grow it out.

My greys are actually all just snowy white that’s why they show up so much against my natural dark colour. There’s not many of them, about 5-10% and they are nearly all around my temples. Little sprinkling in the rest of my hair.

So my plan is to use a light brown semi-permanent, probably a watercolour, for the next six months to a year to give my temple streaks a change to grow to a decent length. I currently have a short fringe, so that’ll be a chance to grow that out too, as I think the streaks will look best with my hair swept back.

Then just stop using the semi and let the greys revert to grey once I am able to sweep my hair back with a scarf or a clip.

This is going to be so much cheaper! A tenner every month or so for a watercolour. Then nothing. I was paying £120+ a go for highlights!

steppemum · 20/11/2018 10:30

really interested in the age of people on this thread.
I am 51, and am not grey. Neither are most of my friends of my age. Just the odd grey hair visible, nowhere near pepper and salt.

I have one friend who went grey in her twenties, but apart from her, I though I was normal. Now I am wondering!

Milliy · 20/11/2018 11:03

I'm 57 and colour and highlight my blond hair. I have lots of freckles and dark green eyes. When I'm grey I shall keep highlighting as I think grey hair would make me look tired and drawn and older. My skin is great and I do face exercising to keep face muscles toned. Love a bit of red lipstick 💄

I could have written this exact same post (even down to the goldness!). I started greying in my 20s and carried on colouring until mid-thirties when I started reacting to the colours. Endured a couple of years growing it out and am pretty happy with my look and colouring now. I do think natural hair colouring does go best with your complexion (although I really miss my "chestnut" days!). I've never worn foundation although I do lips and eyes and I think I look fine.

There are loads of silver shampoos. I tried the Touch of Silver Daily Shampoo but it's a real bugger to get out of the bottle! I tend to use the Touch of Silver Brightening Shampoo once a week or so which I like.

Greeper · 20/11/2018 21:05

I have actually put a silver charcoal semi over my whole head and I love the cool tones and subtle streaks round my face. DH thinks its sexy. So grexit is back on track and I am happy. Excepy for the fact that I am Still Dying My Hair.
