If you are slim but don’t have a waist

How do you style yourself for a night out? Do you wear corset style underwear? Do you have a dress style that works for you? Just feeling like a potato even though am a size ten

Thick belt

Weathergirl1 · 03/11/2018 19:04

I second the belt idea - it draws attention to the waist area. The other thing you can do is to accentuate width at the shoulders/ knee area (so structured shoulders and fuller skirts) as they also make the waistline look like it's narrower (so it looks like you have one).

Shapeless tent-like tops will make it look worse so avoid those.

Thank you

As another straight up and downer, I tend to play up my legs and arms and wear a skirt and top rather than a dress. Dresses often emphasise my lack of waist, and belts can end up looking a bit sad: lonely belt in search of a waist.

I can’t pull of skirt or top - it just makes my shape more barrel like

I wear dresses like this http://m.boden.co.uk/en-gb/womens-dresses/day-dresses/j0235/womens-bronte-jersey-dress as it works on my waist less size 12 body because:
Slightly a line skirt ( balances width at shoulder creating illusion of slimmer middle)
V neck ( draws eye up to neckline away from middle and works for my bigger boobs)
3/4 sleeve ( finishes at hip length so draws eye there away from middle)
Oh and it's comfy!

If you are a size 10 then you won’t look like a barrel!

JessiCake · 05/11/2018 13:24

I'm a size 10 with very very little discernible waist - I'm very straight-up-and-down.

I look like a rugby-player (not helped by the fact I also have massive shoulders and a broad rib-cage) if I wear a remotely body-con dress or even just a fitted shift. Took me bloody YEARS to realise that shift dresses are awful on me - I think I just assumed they're supposed to work for everyone and never questioned why they made me look and feel twice my size!

Have you looked at tunic-type dresses? If you buy and style them carefully, they can be lovely for evening, imho. Whistles do a gorgeous one that I've worn and worn so it's ended up great value for money, it's on the short side but for me it works as my legs are decent and it therefore detracts from the fact i'm wearing something un-fitted when other, curvier people are wearing tight and/or skimpy. Will try and do a link hang on!

And in the sale at the moment too! Comes in different colours/patterns if you look around on the website a bit.

I've worn mine to death, with ankle boots and thick tights.

I'm a fairly minimalist dresser, though, even for evenings, so it may not work if you prefer something glitzier! The style is good for a no-waister though (and I still look slim in it, in fact it's a style I wouldn't have worn when I was about a size 14 as I think you NEED to be slim for this style or it looks simply as if you're trying to disguise yourself in something baggy)

Disabrie22 · 05/11/2018 19:50

Jessicake that’s my shape - over the years I’ve always been surprised when people have described me as “big” when I am 9 and a half stone - it’s because I’m broad shouldered with a big rib cage - swimmer style!
Really hard to dress!
My small floppy boobs don’t help either.
My favouriate dress is a belted bronze shift fromNext that bags a little over the belt and hides my ribs - will try and find old link.

I think my lack of chest and waist (and height - I’m 5.5) often makes clothes look like they are drowning me. Anything tight makes me look like a sack of potatoes.

If I'm wearing a dress I'll usually go for something with a dropped waist, but with the skirt on it a shorter length, as I really don't suit belts on the waist, so anything too structured would look wrong. Otherwise, it's skinnies and a top/fitted jacket with heels, or something like a body-skimming dress. I don't even bother trying to create a waist anymore! I just looks wrong on me, so I play up to my better features instead.

chillichoclove · 05/11/2018 20:33

I've found my people! I really struggle too. V neck, off shoulder, knee length. Low bank ideally. With heels. Hate my ribs!
