Staying warm in dresses?

What do you wear with your dress to stay warm? I normally wear a dress with cotton tights and a cardigan but I'm finding where the temperature has dropped it is a tad cold. How do you stay warm in winter?

Woolly ribbed tights, sometimes with a thin pair underneath! Or leggings.

KeysHairbandNotepad · 01/11/2018 11:28

Lots of layers. Vest over your bra , thick cardigan , scarf , hat etc. Oh , and fleece lined opaque tights , I bought some lovely ones in Boots.

JassyRadlett · 01/11/2018 11:31

For very cold, I second fleece-lined tights - they were a revelation for me last winter.

I am invariably in knee boots when outside in dresses from November to March. Get a good pair with good lining and it makes a massive difference.

seekingclarity · 01/11/2018 11:36

A slip under the dress makes a massive difference.

JaneR0chester · 01/11/2018 12:31

I wore Uniqlo Heat Tech leggings under a midi dress last week (rolled the leggings up slightly so they wouldn't be longer than the dress hem). I was really warm.

Usually layer up with vests, slips or cardigans as PP have suggested.

twosoups1972 · 01/11/2018 12:33

Knitted dresses so don't need a cardigan. You can put a vest top underneath and wear with thick tights and boots.

Nightmanagerfan · 01/11/2018 12:34

Uniqlo heat tech long sleeved top under dress, plus vest, tights and cardigan. Cotton tights aren’t very warm as PP mentioned. M&S do tights that keep the heat in which are good. If I wear boots I also wear socks over tights too. If you’re still cold add a scarf!

Pythone · 01/11/2018 12:44

M&S or Uniqlo heat tech tops/bodies (the M&S body is great for if you don't want to have a "line" where the top ends under a slinky dress - also I wear them over tights so there isn't a tights line either) then a half slip or full slip. Calzedonia opaque tights are lovely and thick (and also totally matte which most "matte" tights aren't). Gloves make a surprising difference.

PoesyCherish · 01/11/2018 13:40

What's a slip? Does anyone know which M&S tights are warm? I'm not a fan of the normal tight material hence the cotton ones at the moment but like you say they're not very warm.

In the morning (7:30) I don’t feel too cold - I’m fine in a dress (shorter lengths with tights) and a thick coat. During work I’ll be okay without my coat.

In the evening (6-7pm) I might put another pair tights on or a jumper on top of my dress with my coat - quite toasty!

Depending on the cut of your dress, you could layer other items like a bodysuit, camisole top, bralet etc under your dress.

Depending on your shoes, recommend layering socks will help. Comfortable footwear conditions make all the difference- no one wants cold, numb feet! Consider taking a pair of trainers to change into if you have to wear heels at work.

M&S do a range of thermal tights. Not tried them but they're 150 denier and I assume they're similar to any other thermal variety. I have some, and they're very warm, but the only issue is that they're so thick they wrinkle around the knees and ankles. Maybe be careful not to get too big a size.

A slip is just like an underskirt or camisole that goes under your dress. Usually it's to stop it going transparent - I'd never thought of it as an extra layer for warmth. They're generally pretty flimsy so not sure they would help that much.

A thermal vest is always good, you can get ones with and without sleeves and with a variety of necklines so you can fit it to the dress you have. And I've found that covering your neck with a scarf makes a world of difference. It doesn't have to be a big thick woolly one, any sort will do, so you can keep it on when you take your coat off.

picklemepumpkin · 01/11/2018 14:16

A slip, or petticoat, definitely helps. So does a cami top or vest underneath.

I find thick rubber soled boots much warmer than ordinary soles.

I often wear leggings instead of tights

Also, a scarf around the neckline of the dress, tucked in, really helps. And wrist cuffs.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 01/11/2018 15:03

What's a slip?

It's what Meghan should have been wearing under that blue skirt yesterday...

It's a petticoat.

seekingclarity · 01/11/2018 16:29

slip Makes a massive difference and makes the dress look better too.

Tortadellanonna · 01/11/2018 16:38

Thermal top tucked in to thermal tights

Shampaincharly · 01/11/2018 16:40

Merino wool tights...John Lewis , FALKE , Wolford .

RavenLG · 01/11/2018 16:42

Leggings, knee length boots and a cardigan usually suffices with me. Wool tights might be good, thermal vest underneath?

twosoups1972 · 01/11/2018 19:36

What sort of dresses are you all wearing with a cardigan?? A short sleeved summer dress?

LoveBeingAMum555 · 01/11/2018 19:41

I wear M&S Heatgen thermal long sleeved tops under long sleeved dresses. Thermal tights and cardigan or jacket.

JanetLovesJason · 01/11/2018 22:57

Petticoat underneath, thick tights, long boots.

Notcontent · 01/11/2018 23:02

In winter I always wear Uniqlo scoop neck heat tech tops under all dresses and thick tights. Oh, and a big scarf, as my office at work gets chilly.

BrennieGirl · 02/11/2018 00:03

I usually wear a camisole or thermal vest and thick tights under dresses. But wearing a slip under a dress makes it look much better. However they don't keep you warm as they tend to be low at the front and back and be quite strappy. A slip that was kind of built up around the shoulders and back would be ideal.

So I've been conducting a completely fruitless world wide years long search for a warm slip!

Has anyone ever seen one in real life or online?

Jozen · 02/11/2018 00:09

I find it easier to be warmer in dresses that I do in jeans and tops/jumpers.
I wear a loose chunky cardi on a not too cold day or when I know I'll be mainly indoors so I can take it off.
For freezing days, I wear a thin thermal base layer tucked into tights. I look like an overgrown toddler.

PoesyCherish · 02/11/2018 10:15

@twosoups1972 I tend to wear this sort of dress:
