Items which you think are easy to wear but stylish

Just as the title really, I want to look more put together and stylish but also want to be comfortable as have a one year old. I'm just about to buy some new jeans and suede new balance but questioning myself on those! What are you key pieces that make you look effortlessly stylish?

-always a scarf

  • layers so I strip off/on during dates in winter merino singlet then t short then cardigan then coat
-natural fibres so work or cotton or silk -good shoes which are clean (note to self polish shoes) -leather handbag -flattering colours -I feel naked without earrings
  • clean hair, some tinted moisturise, lipstick, eyebrow pencil so min makeup

Thanks @LunaTheCat a scarf is a good idea, I always do hair and make up. I was hoping for links to items of clothing that basically I could buy (steal the idea of!) and look stylish!

I always think that a nice grey sweatshirt, straight blue jeans and white Stan Smith style trainers look effortlessly cool.

I've not managed to perfect that look though I think it's because I'm too fat.

I'll be watching this with interest!

yestonodressyet · 01/11/2018 09:10

Ha @Chimchar I'm the same! Currently a bit short and a 14/16 and hold my weight on my boobs and stomach so I can imagine lots of cool outfits or I see clothes in shops and think that would look good with that but just not on me!
I keep trying the whole midi skirt with jumper and biker jacket look but I just look awful!

I think it’s more to do with proportions and making sure things hit at the most flattering part of your body.

I find tailoring very useful to make sure that skirts/dresses hit at the slimmest part of my leg and making sure that I’m either embracing or balancing out my short waist.

Once you get that right, everything should look right on you.

HundredMilesAnHour · 01/11/2018 09:15

Good quality accessories make a huge difference. I know it's a cliche but it's true. And wear what suits you rather than slavingly following fashion! (if I see one more person, wearing leopard print....you don't look stylish, you look like sheep following a trend regardless of whether it suits you or not).

Chimchar · 01/11/2018 09:21

I'm the same size. MASSIVE boobs. I think that's the thing. The boobs.

Regardless. I have my own style. It's me. I think it's about knowing what suits you rather than what is trendy. I have realised I look much better with a collar than with a round neck. I wear comfy fabrics, clothes I can layer because I'm always cold, and always a scarf. Bloody love a scarf.

You should go and have a try on...if you vaguely like it on the hanger, try it on, even if it's not your usual style. See how it makes you feel. If you love it, get it. If you don't, discard and try something else.

evilharpy · 01/11/2018 09:25

I find even on a bad day a leather biker jacket makes me look and feel infinitely more put together. However I’m pear shaped; someone with bigger boobs might not get on with them?

Also love a black polo neck but again maybe not if you are large of nork.

Always always a good leather handbag and decent shoes.

Lost5stone · 01/11/2018 09:46

I don't have big boobs so might not work for you but a black roll neck top or jumper is very easy to wear for me and always looks stylish

I basically have an every day uniform of well fitting jeans, black long sleeved top, chelsea boots, black bag and camel wool coat at the moment

evilharpy · 01/11/2018 09:48

Lost5Stone that sounds not unlike my own uniform, when I’m not working!

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 01/11/2018 09:56

Red lipstick

yestonodressyet · 01/11/2018 10:26

Yes the norms rule out bikers and polo necks I'm afraid, a V neck suits me best but agree @Chimchar collars are good too.
I think my main issue is all my jeans dig in on my stomach fat so I need a loose top but then it hangs like a boob shelf and makes me look bigger but if I buy bigger jeans they're loose on my legs and that then makes my smallest bit look bigger!
In reality I probably should just lose the weight!!

Have you tried higher waisted jeans?

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 01/11/2018 12:29

How are your legs? Skirt and boots? Would that work?

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 01/11/2018 14:47

A slouchy roll neck works for all figures and looks great in your best neutral for easy, effortless style. They look best longline -so arse covering.

I have several in black, navy, charcoal and lighter grey. Shove on with jeans and boots and it will take you through most things...

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 01/11/2018 14:48

Re jeans just wear jeggings that look like jeans. I rate Next jersey denim ones for comfort.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 01/11/2018 14:58

this Boden one would work well with straight/slim leg jeans.

The only thing I rate from them is their off duty jumpers and this is similar....

MadameButterface · 01/11/2018 14:58

if you wear big tops and you have big knockers and a bit of a belly then you need to be skinny on the bottom, so find the nicest comfiest skinny jeans/jeggings you possibly can in your budget, (H&M do some really nice high waisted skinny jeggings that I think are about a tenner which rocks) make sure the length is bang on (have them altered if necessary) and get a pair in black, indigo and grey

suede trainers are't amazing for winter tbh, I would be looking at really nice biker boots like fryes, get the absolute spendiest ones you can afford, same for a really nice winter coat - if you have summat chunky on your feet it balances your top bit out as well

basically spaff all your money on coats and boots because let's face it that's pretty much all anyone's gonna see of each other from now till April, is my main advice

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 01/11/2018 15:02

This one looks good too (also Boden)

Dresses are the epitome of stylish-yet-easy to me, and unlike some trends, there's a style to suit every shape. For your shape, perhaps a tunic-style that skims your hips but doesn't cling and also won't give you a monoboob/have a plunging neckline that you're constantly in fear of falling out of. Wrap dresses can work too, as they hang from under your bust, but you might want to wear a vest top under it or else sew a popper in a strategic position so it stays where you want it to.

Accessorise with boots or brogues, a scarf, and some dangly earrings.

yestonodressyet · 01/11/2018 16:35

Thanks for all the suggestions, I might try to find a longer jumper but maybe with more of a cowl neck as high necks don't work on me.
Good tip about the chunky footwear balancing me out!

I'm norky and not v stylish, but I do quite like cowl and roll neck jumpers, with a black biker jacket over.

I also quite like mini-ish tube skirts, with black opaques and ankle boots.
