40yo help with foundation

ja9r · 31/10/2018 18:45

Is it just me or does anyone else feel completely overwhelmed when they go to buy foundation?

About 16 brands to choose from and each does several different types of foundation.... never mind finding the right shade...

How on earth do I distinguish between them all?

I'm 40. Pale-ish complexion with freckles. Have a slightly oily t Zone.

Otherwise skin is non descrip.

Any pointers anyone??! Please?!

I know just what you mean. I like Clarins as I find it suits my skin plus their paler colours are not too pink toned. I went to one of their counters at a quieter time and said what I was looking for - something for dryish skin, slightly oily t zone and high colouring on my cheeks. The assistant tried several things on me and I bought a foundation aimed at older skin because it felt more comfortable on. Worth doing ime.

Try a tinted moisturiser and then use a separate concealer where you need extra coverage (round the nose, chin, cheeks in my case). Foundation seems to exaggerate and crepeiness/lines IMO.

Tinted moisturiser evens out the skin tone and leaves your skin looking naturally radiant.

Set with a tiny amount of setting powder.

Tbh I'm another one whose switched away from foundation to tinted moisturiser/BB creams.

That said my current favourite is the No7 foundation drops.

You just add to your favourite moisturiser - each additional drop increases the coverage, which I find great as I can create tinted moisturiser for all over and then mix a bit extra with an additional drop for areas where I might want extra coverage if I feel I need it.

It also means I can vary which moisturiser I use it with depending on if I want something very dewey or a lighter texture.

I do have deep set wrinkles on forehead so intrigued by the tinted moisturiser. Is it as big a minefield as foundations though??!

It can be yes :-)

There are lots out there but imho as a product they are generally more forgiving than foundations, in the sense that as long as you get a good colour match they are less unpredictable in terms of how they perform on your skin.

By which I mean I've bought foundations that just didn't work for me at all and had to bin but with tinted moisturisers whilst I might have some I prefer to others on my skin they've all been used.

I have freckles and rosy cheeks (abd 41 and suddenly getting crepey) and I've found bareminerals complexion rescue great with a little extra concealer (currently ysl but I'm looking at other cheaper ones). I was using their powder and also to set it a bit but it's not sitting well at the mo as I have dry post part skin. Its a tinted moisturiser and It's also factor 30, it covers enough but allows the freckles through.

I looooove their bronzer as it then brings out and matches the freckles again plus a little bit of their blusher. I had medium bronzer during the summer but I think I'll go a tad lighter over winter.

It's worth getting someone to do it for you in store as I wasn't using as much as they do plus it does take a bit longer to sink in than I realised. You can add more too. I'm finding it's ok around my eyes too, though I add s little extra concealer if needed.

I’m 42 with freckles and gave up wearing foundation a few years ago.
I use a radiance primer then maybe a tinted moisturiser or B.B. cream. Concealer.

I think foundation can be ageing when you get older. This also means I can reapply spf during the day.

ja9r · 01/11/2018 20:53

Ok... so changing my question then... can you recommend me a mid range tinted moisturiser ? Please...

Hello
The IT cosmetics BB cream, or Bourjois serum foundation with setting powder for t zone. A good you tuber, is hot and flashy, she is in her 50s and gives great reviews on foundation. I use Chanel Velvet, no powder needed, very matte.
Hope this helps Smile

BitchyChuckle · 01/11/2018 21:05

So do you use a moisturiser under your tinted one? What about primer?

chezbot · 01/11/2018 21:06

I'm 40, similar skin type and I get on v well with the body shop' s BB cream (£12.99) assistant was v helpful too, steered me away from my intended purchase towards this.

BrightonBB · 01/11/2018 21:13

What does BB stand for?

DeRigueurMortis · 01/11/2018 22:14

I use an all in one moisturiser/primer (This Works, In Transit).

I might very occasionally put on a thicker moisturiser before if my skin is very dry.

Again though it's more forging than foundation so a primer, isn't essential imho though it does help with longevity and gives a better skin finish to my eye.

As my pp I actually use the No7 foundation drops atm (mixed with In Transit usually or one of my other moisturisers) to create my own tinted moisturiser. If you want to create a foundation you just add more drops.

I love it as you can control the level of coverage and also by changing what you mix it with the finish (so using a gel moisturiser for a more Matt finish for example)

From a Beaty website: BB stands for Blemish Balm or Blemish Base but that doesn't mean it's a spot cream. It's more of a multi-function cream that has coverage and skincare properties.

Clankboing · 01/11/2018 22:47

No7 Boots tinted moisturiser is good. Very natural, not too shiny, not too matte.

Delatron · 01/11/2018 23:11

Laura Mercier tinted moisturiser is good.
Yes primer underneath (a radiance one).
