Work clothes for freezing cold office?

daisylovesgin · 31/10/2018 06:43

So my office in my new job is arctic due to an overenthusiastic air con system. My usual work attire is dresses and jackets or three quarter length trousers and a Boden ravello type top with jacket, but these are freezing now. What do you wear to look vaguely stylish when it’s so cold? What footwear would work? I usually wear high courts but again too cold now!

i used to wear a warm dress like this with a pair of black tights and boots like these

DontCallMeCharlotte · 31/10/2018 11:17

I'm wondering the same myself.

All I can say is don't believe what anyone tells you about Uniqlo "heattech". I'm wearing the velvet leggings today and it's a big lie (or I haven't found the switch yet Grin). My legs are bloody freezing!

ZestyDragon · 31/10/2018 11:21

Today I have smart but warm trousers with heels, a t-shirt style knit top and a waterfall cardigan. We have given up on stylish here and aim for warm. One of my staff wore a shawl yesterday looked like a warm blanket to me

DontCallMeCharlotte · 31/10/2018 11:30

Damn sleepismysuperpower1! I wish hadn't seen those boots. They are exactly what I've been looking for and I can't justify spending that on myself right now. Boo.

Laska5772 · 31/10/2018 11:38

Silk thermals under dress skirt/ jumper and and leggings / boots. Patra silk do good scoop necksilk jersey tops .thin but really warm . Expensive true but last forever ( well mine have ).I have several now and they are really unnoticeable. We all wear shawls/ pashminas and UGG type boots under our desks also.. our office is s roasting in summer and freezing in winter.

user1981287 · 31/10/2018 11:39

I wear cashmere fingerless gloves. It makes a massive difference to how warm I feel, particularly since my role means I often don't move from my desk for three hours.

Laska5772 · 31/10/2018 11:40

Also cashmere cardis

M&S's heatgen plus range is really good. Vests, long johns etc. I find their plain long sleeve tops smart enough for under a jacket, and they have a lovely soft inside which makes me feel warmer www.marksandspencer.com/heatgen-thermal-long-sleeve-top/p/p22409889?image=SD_02_T61_9123_Y0_X_EC_90&color=BLACK&prevPage=plp&pdpredirect

ileclerc · 31/10/2018 11:44

I have to wear long sleeved vests in my office.

Today I am wearing long sleeve vest, opaques and a woolen dress with brogues. Also wearing a scarf right now and, lots of others have fleeces on. Its stupid, you have to take clothes off to go outside.

Hot water bottles also make a regular appearance.

thedevilinablackdress · 31/10/2018 13:07

Tights under trousers. Boots, socks. Smart jumper with l/s t-shirt AND vest.

PhilODox · 31/10/2018 13:15

I wear vests from around November until May March...
I've been wearing woollen dresses with woolly tights/below the knee boots, thick flannel trousers, or woollen tweed trousers, with a shirt, and a merino v-necked jumper under my suit jacket.
Sometimes I keep my scarf (pashmina or lambswool) on all day.

TakeAChanseyOnMe · 31/10/2018 13:16

Not sure if they still sell them but Primark used to have fleece lined tights. They were so cosy and only about £3.

PhilODox · 31/10/2018 13:17

Also, I have a Japanese waist warmer (harumaki) which keeps me toasty (Japanese believe you should keep your kidneys warm). You can get them in the UK from Etsy.

BiddyPop · 31/10/2018 13:24

I wear M&S good thermal vests in the office (and proper merino versions when out hillwalking or doing Cub Scout stuff). The M&S versions with silk are nice, quite thin enough to wear under dresses etc without being seen, but do make a big difference. Warm tights under dresses (there are decent opaques which are still thin enough to wear court shoes but are warmer than the 10-20 denier tights I might wear in summer under dresses), and also yes to tights under trousers in very cold days.

Lined dresses. Lined trousers. CArdigans. Thicker tops or even wearing a thin ribbed or plain jumper as a top under a jacket or pinafore dress.

Can you also talk to others about the air con itself? There is a limit below which you shouldn't be working (maybe 16 degrees?) - but sitting in even 18 degrees all day can be cold. Is it centrally controlled? Or is there a proverbially hot person who takes control?

applesandpears33 · 31/10/2018 13:34

Boden tweed jackets. Nice and toasty but still reasonably smart.

LightastheBreeze · 31/10/2018 16:51

I have a blanket thing I keep at work for over my legs if it is cold. I also wear a thick cardigan and scarf, trousers and ankle boots. I also keep one of those Marks and Spencers shawl things at work to wear if I need it.

explodingkitten · 31/10/2018 17:44

Our company fixed the aircon pronto when we all brought blankets and hot water bottles.

Lwmommy · 31/10/2018 17:51

I have the opposite problem, dress for the journey to work and the bastards keep whacking up the heat, it was 26 degrees in our office today. Im going in, in many layers and stripping off as the day goes on.

ChishandFips33 · 31/10/2018 20:03

Layers! We have an unpredictable office; freezing one day, hot the next

I always wear high denier or fleece line tights, a vest top or slip I'm so old! and thin layers after that

I keep a lightweight large scarf, a wrap, cosy socks and turtledoves cashmere fingerless gloves/wrist warmers in my desk - colleagues have similar items

How much do you walk around/need to be smart? Is it 'business dress' at all times or can you adapt look like a granny with a knee blanket

LoveBeingAMum555 · 01/11/2018 19:51

Whistles slim jersey jackets - warm, comfy and stylish.
M&S Heatgen long sleeved tops tucked into fleece lined/super thick tights.
A high neckline or scarf makes a huge difference, can be a stylish, lightweight scarf rather than a woolly one!
Fitted ribbed jumpers with a chunky necklace tucked into a skirt or trousers looks stylish (I am loving the New Look jumpers this winter).

TheBitterBoy · 01/11/2018 19:57

Uniqlo fine 100% merino sweaters and cardigans (can wear like a twinset). I also wear knee length black socks under my trousers, Boots do good ones. And wool trousers, although these seem to be much harder to find this year.

BowTieBaby · 01/11/2018 19:59

Air cons are set to men’s body temperature; it’s oroven that women on average have a colder core temperature than women.

Speak to maintenance

Take in a hot water bottle

Use fingerless gloves

Wear a woolly hat

I do all of the above!

BowTieBaby · 01/11/2018 19:59

Fuck me

Air cons are set to men’s body temperature; it’s proven that women on average have a colder core temperature than men.

tigerlionness · 01/11/2018 20:00

definitely fleece lined tights, they are amazing!!

Chottie · 01/11/2018 20:06

Layers, layers and more layers.

I wear a thermal vest, a dress, M&S heat retaining black tights with ankle boots (or biker boots with a pair of socks too, if it is really cold), a cardigan, wrist warmers and a scarf. If it is really, really cold I add a large cashmere shawl which is lightweight but so warm.

I work in an office with no central heating or air conditioning. We manage with portable heaters and opening the windows. One side of the room is just glass so either boiling or freezing depending on the season and sunny it is.
