Best eyeliner for tightlining?

I am very taken with tightlining and wish I'd discovered it decades ago. Anyway, if you saw my post on the "what's in your make up bag thread", you will see I've got about half a dozen eyeliners (most are gel as I gather this is best), none of which do the job properly. The Avon ones go on nicely but aren't as intense as I would like and don't last that long. The Maybelline one doesn't go on very well although it lasts better. Again, not intense enough.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks.

The very very very best one is Laura Mercier cake eyeliner, applied with the LM flat brush. I've had allllll the eyeliners and it's the only one I've ever repurchased. You can use it for tightlining, and also for cat-eye flicks, etc. Doesn't budge, beautiful opaque colour - I've had black, brown, navy blue (brings out the green in my eyes).

Max Factor eyeliner Excess Intensity in brown, I used to use Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner but expensive. I only discovered tightlining last year and wish I had started doing it years ago too! Makes such a difference

Thanks GlasgowWorrier, I'll take a look (although I had hoped to avoid a brush, but if needs must).

I see a lot of eyeliners use brushes these days. It's like going back in time. I'll be spitting on it next Grin

Does the Laura Mercier come with a brush?
I have an angled flat one...

DontCallMeCharlotte · 30/10/2018 12:59

Thanks all. I will add the Laura Mercier one (and brush!) to my Christmas list for DH. It's a bit more than I was planning to pay on this occasion, so it will be nice to get it as a treat (so that I will feel less guilty for not using the many others I already have!).

The Laura Mercier doesn't come with a brush. I use a Zoeva angled flat one. It is excellent and lasts for ages, I have the plum riche colour.

You do have to wet it down to use it, they used to do an activator liquid for it but it has been discontinued (spit works too)!

GlasgowWorrier · 30/10/2018 15:32

You can use any flat liner brush - MAC also does a nice one. I hold the brush into running tap water or use the residue from my contact lens case instead of spitting! The cake liner lasts for ages and doesn't dry out like gel liner because it's already dry.

I really rate it - tightlining has been a real winner for me too, especially since my lashes starting thinning out with age [shakes fist at peri menopause]

Laura Mercier pencils work as well. A makeup artist used them for the look good feel good campaign at selfridges and I have used them ever since.

AckYourHole · 01/11/2018 19:49

@Lndnmummy which Laura Mercier pencil would you recommend ? There's a few when I googled, don't know which one to pick

DontCallMeCharlotte · 01/11/2018 20:29

Thank you thank you! Bank balance was healthier than anticipated so I went with this one (until Christmas Wink) www.johnlewis.com/laura-mercier-instant-ink-brush-eye-liner-black/p3077314

And I have some birthday money. I do like her eyeliner so have high hopes!

HappenstanceMarmite · 02/11/2018 09:31

I tried tight lining with a pencil, but I found it washed away from the eye fluids. Does this not happen with other products eg as mentioned in PP? Thanks

CrazySheepLady · 02/11/2018 14:50

Excuse my cosmetic naivete, but what is tightlining, please?

I've never managed to find an eyeliner, of any kind or brand, which delivers consistently. Might give the LM one a try.

GlasgowWorrier · 02/11/2018 15:29

Tightlining is when you apply eyeliner along the roots of your eyelashes - so not in the water line under your eyelid, or above the lashes where you'd normally sweep liner. It has the lovely subtle effect of making your lashes look thicker because you can't see any gaps, and when you connect it all up with mascara, your eyes somehow look more defined but not overly made-up.

There are lots of tutorials on Youtube but I've found the LM liner is best because the fine, flat brush finds the right place without too much effort, and it doesn't drag or dry out like a felt-tip liner does. Once you've got the knack of lifting your lashes just a fraction, it's actually pretty quick and easy.

CrazySheepLady · 02/11/2018 16:22

Thanks, @GlasgowWorrier, for the explanation. It actually makes sense, now I think about it, and I think it would suit me. I'm going to try it out!
