My brittle bleach blond hair. Help me!

I have quite long thick hair that I've been bleaching for about 25 years now.
I know that sounds grim, but I love the colour of my hair. It suits me and people always comment on my hair.

Anyway, a couple of years ago I stopped spending £160 in the salon and bought the products my hairdresser used and started to do it at home for less than £30. I like the results after a mixed start, but anyway.
Now my hair is dry as hell. It looks fine but feels dry to me and knots a bit round the nape of my neck during the day,

I heard Olaplex is good but also that Philip Kinglsley's Elasticiser will help? Any advice?
I've been putting coconut oil in my hair, Redken hair masks etc, and don't see a huge difference. Feel like shaving my bonce and starting again!

Olaplex!!! That stuff saved my hair and prior to that I was putting coconut oil 3 days a week no shame in public as it was horrible for 2 months. Olaplex saved my hair!

Joico K-Pak Reconstructor. Has been used and recommended by the members of the hairdyeforum for years. Its fantastic for repairing the overbleaching damaged hair. Good news is it smells divine.

Another tip is to cover your hair in coconut oil before using bleach. The bleach will cut straight through the oil and still gets the same results but it works as a bit of a barrier between the bleach and raw hair.

You can buy olaplex on eBay that you add to the hair colour as you colour it. It's what I use at home with highlift with 12%. My hair is soft and not too damaged. I wouldn't be using the high lift through the rest of your hair each time as it's got a really high ammonia content so could be causing more damage, why don't you use a toner or get some purple shampoo?

FellSwoop · 31/10/2018 22:33

Purple shampoo, especially the cheap ones, are really drying.

What has hands down saved my hair is Davine's Natural Tech Nourishing Hair Building Pak. AMAZING

What is the best (least drying) purple shampoo, does anyone know?

FellSwoop · 31/10/2018 23:19

Elle I like the Bleach London one

Ihavepatrick · 31/10/2018 23:20

Bleach London do a good purple shampoo and conditioner. Also their hair oil is brilliant.

Unicyclethief · 01/11/2018 01:56

I know you think it doesn’t make much difference to the look of your hair, whether you do it for peanuts at home or sit for hours in a salon. But it really really does.

Elledorado · 01/11/2018 07:03

Thanks Fell and patrick

snapnfarter · 01/11/2018 11:19

Thanks Unicycle. But it really really doesn't and I really really really don't give a fuck if you really think it really does.

Does your hairdresser use the Olaplex as part of your salon treatment? I haven't used it but IIRC there's 1+2 done in the salon then 3 done at home.

I like the Bleach London Reginerist mask and Shea Moisture mask.

Coconut oil makes my scalp react badly .

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 01/11/2018 11:46

opps Re-incarnation not regenerist

ShirleyPhallus · 01/11/2018 11:48

Wow that escalated quickly! Shock

OhhEnnEmm · 01/11/2018 11:52

I had this problem bad last year, I stopped bleaching and over time kept getting more and more of the blonde cut out at the salon.

Needless to say, now that it's all my natural regrown hair it is fine.

But the only thing that helped somewhat was coconut oil.

Though intensive conditioner is essentially mandatory anyway with bleached hair, so I guess both.

Terriergrrrrrrrr · 01/11/2018 12:43

Loreal professional CC Cream for blondes toned my bleached home highlights nicely and moisturised well. It's around £10 A tube. I found purple shampoo really drying - even the posh stuff. And I always got a better result highlighting at home than I did at the hairdresser.

fruitshot · 01/11/2018 12:58

The best purple shampoo, by far, is this one.

Fanola No Yellow – Shampoo – Anti Yellowing Shampoo https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07C4K89RZ/ref=cmswwrcppapi_7EV2BbY960FKB

It will take all of the brass out and look like you've just had your hair done.
Please do wear gloves to apply.
The smell is a little funky, but only lasts until you use normal shampoo.

I leave on for 15mins. If I go the full 20, I do get a bit of a purple tinge in certain lights.

snapnfarter · 02/11/2018 22:30

I wonder if that might be the problem! I use shed loads of purple shampoo and conditioner and since I started I guess that's when I noticed my hair becoming knotty and brittle.
