HOw long could you make your current clothes last until they were actually worn out?

I was just having a think about this having watched Wartime Farm.

How long could you wear your current collection of clothes and shoes before they were worn out and needed replacing?

I have a capsule but even so I could probably go at least a decade before I would actually need anything.

Anyone else ponder this?

I could probably get at least a decade but it depends on if your talking about it's been the apocalypse so it doesn't matter how dirty they look because I don't need to be smart for work anymore or if you mean Iv got a date/night out/ job interview and I needs to look smart situation.

To be honest Iv got clothes that are probably 10-15 years old that I could and do wear and Iv got clothes that are at least that age but haven't lasted so well that I still wear as nightwear so I'm maybe not fussy enough to be an appropriate person to answer Blush
Shoes I keep going as long as possible, so either until they smell and can't be unsmellified or they are not watertight etc

I have things in my wardrobe that are over 40 years old! I do have a cull now and again, but very little goes to the skip most goes to charity shops as still very wearable.

It’s mainly underwear, t shirts and woollens that wear out, I don’t seem to wear out shoes, but I do take them to the cobblers if they are a pair I wear a lot.

I don’t buy from primark etc. but mostly from high street and department stores, so not high end.

I think my wardrobe would see me out if needs be!

Apart from a couple of M&S sweatshirts from the 90s, not that long. They don't make clothes like they used to and all of my footwear is already past its best as I've not bought any new shoes or boots for ages.

To make the most out of my wardrobe I may have to vary my weight over the years so that I can also wear out my thin and fat clothes. But yeah a long time.

My summer wardrobe is a bit crap and mostly cheap pieces so they would go first. I have amazing quality boots including still boxed Dr Martens and good wool coats which I will keep until done.

Shoes and smart trousers, dresses and coats I'd be OK but socks, t-shirts, jeans and jumpers don't last long before they wear out, so only a few years for those items.

Kewqueue · 30/10/2018 06:31

Jeans, socks and shoelaces wear out quite quickly for me. I get holes in tops but they could be repaired. I could probably use my clothes for the rest of my life but I'd look quite tatty.

Solasum · 30/10/2018 06:31

I think I could probably be clothed in some way for life. My jeans wouldn’t last long, and socks wouldn’t be great after a while.

Assuming also if it really wasn’t possible to acquire more clothes, that everyone would be losing weight too.

I have thought about this before. When was the tipping point when people on average incomes moved away from having only one outfit for best and a few changes?

Solasum · 30/10/2018 06:32

Losing weight and getting back into older clothes, I meant

LettuceP · 30/10/2018 06:43

I buy cheap clothes so not long. I wish I could afford to buy quality, expensive clothes that would last for years.

ZaZathecat · 30/10/2018 08:18

I buy high street/supermarket clothes but nothing really wears out as such (except socks, but I suppose I could darn them).
Shoes and boots though - they start leaking water and soles get thin. Then again, people used to go to the cobbler and have them repaired.

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 30/10/2018 08:28

I wear a uniform at work so my normal clothes already last a while.

I do wear out the inner thighs of most trousers though, even my more expensive jeans eventually wore through.

I think my clothes could last a while but things like underwear and shoes (worlds most awkward feet) wouldn't last as long.
