Am I a winter?

I suit navy blue, white, dark wine red, and emerald green - does this make me a winter? What other colours would suit me?

OP posts:

I can wear some of the bright and sultry winter colours. I might be a mix between the 2. (was diagnosed a sultry winter, but alot of the icey colours were also starred for me).

Lurking perhaps you're a deep winter? (look at that kettlewell link posted by a pp).

Fashionista101 · 01/11/2018 12:46

@Dontfeellikeaskeleton yessss I'm going to play with blues next

GraceMarks · 01/11/2018 13:31

I was convinced I was an autumn because I love wine red, dark green, russet brown etc, but I've just been told I'm a summer! I don't like pastels so I'm not planning to be too strict about it, tbh.

I think the key to knowing if you're a winter is if you suit black. I was told that on any other "season" it will be ageing and draining, but it will look great on a winter person such as Angelina Jolie.

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 01/11/2018 14:32

Black also suits clear/bright Springs.

Dontfeellikeaskeleton · 01/11/2018 14:55

Great link, face like a pair

OK, so I'm either a cool or bright winter.

But I'm blonde? Can I be a blonde winter?

FaceLikeAPairOfTits · 01/11/2018 15:30

My hair is light brown, and I'm a winter, so yes, you don't have to be dark.

sizzledrizz · 01/11/2018 16:10

What if I have dark brown hair (but dye it black) and olive skin. I suit both navy and black, can wear all Jewel shades but not teal. Some pastels look ok if paired with white. Purple looks best on me. Can not wear yellow

sizzledrizz · 01/11/2018 16:11

Look awful in brown, OK in camel, good in white, awful in cream

Justkeeprollingalong · 01/11/2018 17:02

Does going grey change your category?

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 01/11/2018 17:08

Gosh I have so little 'colour' in my wardrobe that it's hard to recall what suits other than black! Blush. I used to look very good in lilac...

AnnaNimmity · 01/11/2018 18:37

you sound like me sizzle - I'm a winter.

There are different kinds of winter though.

When you have the test done face to face, if you dye your hair they cover it up in a cloth.

Doobigetta · 01/11/2018 19:08

All the colours mentioned in the OP work really well for me, but I am a deep Summer, not a Winter. Cobalt blue makes me look absolutely terrible, and bright red is too much as well. Soft cocoa brown does work for me though, and it wouldn’t for a Winter.

PickAChew · 01/11/2018 19:23

Yes, just the emeralds and cobalt of true winter (by that Kettlewell guide) that I used to rock with really dark hair completely wash me out, now I'm salt and pepper and my skin tone isn't what it was. The cool winter shades suit me much better. I used to look awful in greys but can get away with them, now. I can no longer wear black next to my skin as it makes me look haggard.

The only colour that's stuck is red.

What2donow4 · 01/11/2018 19:30

I'm a Jewel Winter (officially diagnosed by HoC) with pale skin, freckles and blonde hair Dontfeellikeaskeleton

Carol020582 · 01/11/2018 21:12

Pedantic spring medic here.

You can't be diagnosed as a season. It's not a medical condition! You are draped by a consultant. If you decide yourself them say you've analysed or decided yourself.

Redandblue11 · 01/11/2018 22:40

Can someone explain what is this season and colours thing?
I am very interested...
How do you work it out?

WitchyMcWitchface · 02/11/2018 06:33

You could probably have a practice yourself by sitting in a good light with a good sized mirror in front of you and drape items of clothing in different colours (not patterned) across your front. I can see when I put something that suits me on as my face looks softer. Some colours pick out and highlight the shadows eg undereye shadows, or the lines at the side of your mouth. These don't suit me. Also my eyes appear to change, sometimes intense, sometimes pale.

CountFosco · 02/11/2018 07:40

Does going grey change your category?

I think HoC officially say no but I think it might. My Mum has gone a lovely salt and pepper grey and the colours she suits have changed to much cooler tones than she use to wear, e.g. she now really suits a pale blue whereas when she was younger it looked terrible on her. And she can wear black now but couldn't before. But I'm a bit cynical about the whole thing anyway so probably not the best person to ask!

Doobigetta · 02/11/2018 10:57

Does going grey change your category?

I think you can go from deep or warm to soft or light, but you wouldn’t change fundamentally, e.g. you wouldn’t go from being a deep autumn to a light summer. And you wouldn’t move to a stronger season.

Floisme · 02/11/2018 11:18

I've no idea whether going grey changes your category (I'm not interested in seasons) but your skin tone changes as well as your hair colour so you may well find different colours suit you and that your favourite colours no longer work. I gave up black completely in my 40s but in my 60s I'm cautiously going back to it - as long as it's a bit washed out.

quirkychick · 03/11/2018 07:28

I don't think going grey is supposed to change your category, but I've always been very cool toned anyway. What I did find was that I lost a lot of the contrast from having very dark hair and very pale skin, as I now have silvery hair and pale skin, so I wear the same colours but put them together differently, iyswim. I also find I can wear black more easily, but I think it's because my hair now softens it a bit, but navy, charcoal grey or dark brown are still more flattering on me.
