Hit me with your warmest coat advice please? Is a down filled one the warmest?

I've seen a down filled one in hollister but I'm not sure what it will be like compared to synthetic filled

Plus I'd like one to be both warm and waterproof. Does that combination exist?

I bought a Sherwood Forest coat last year (Hampton? I think.) and found it very warm! I'm actually looking for a slightly less warm one to wear this year on all but the coldest days. But I don't do down - cruelty free down is too expensive for me - so I don't know how it compares.

It's not in any way stylish, but the coat that has kept me warm, and reasonably dry for several winters is the Lands End Commuter coat. Comes in petite as well as standard length so perfect for shorties!
Usually has 50% off.

Seasalt Janelle is properly waterproof and warm and, importantly for me, covers my bum and goes to just past my knees. Brilliant for wet British winters. North Face Arctic Parka fab but the Seasalt one wins it here due to its length in horizontal windy rain.

For dry cold - North Face Metropolis Parka, again covers your bum..I've just got a Patagonia down jacket and it's lovely, comfy and warm but waist length. Patagonia do a great looking 3 in one parka which looks like it'd cover all of the above but it is £££.

If you want ridiculously warm go for Canada Goose, very warm then Didrikson.

Delatron · 28/10/2018 09:39

I’m trying to find a North Face one but watching for suggestions. Canada Goose are terrible for animal cruelty.

rosettesforjill · 28/10/2018 12:34

I have a lovely North Face one - really cosy!

sizzledrizz · 28/10/2018 12:48

I second the Northface Arctic parka, and Seasalt janelle. I have both. I once owned the TNF metropolis and sold it because not waterproof so no point

Thissameearth · 28/10/2018 14:37

I’m interested too. Like the look at the arctic but so expensive, £290 looked like absolute cheapest. Anything comparable with this but under/around £200?

rosettesforjill · 28/10/2018 14:54

You sometimes get lucky with Northface stuff in TK Maxx. I think I got mine in a January sale but unfortunately it was still quite expensive! Lovely though and still going strong almost six years later (and well worn).

Swiftier · 28/10/2018 16:26

Canada Goose are terrible for animal cruelty - they use real fur trims! Plus down is unethical and unnecessary.

I have a Parka London coat which is warm and waterproof. It has a detachable liner so if it’s not super cold I just wear the shell. With the liner in it was warm enough for snowy days. I also have a North Face which isn’t as stylish but warm and waterproof and I use it when walking the dog.

Swiftier · 28/10/2018 16:27

Also, if you’re looking for North Face you could see if you’re near to an outlet store. I got my coat from an outlet at about half the normal price.

RhubarbTea · 28/10/2018 16:46

Didrikson parka all the way! Mine is so warm that I can't wear it unless the weather is really chilly or a boil in it. Waterproof as well. Although synthetic not down.

thebookeatinggirl · 28/10/2018 16:57

Seasalt Plant Hunter. Really cosy, really waterproof, but feels light and the outside has a lovely texture, despite being waterproof.

MynameisJune · 28/10/2018 17:01

I’ve just got a Didrikson Pysen coat, knee length, waterproof, huge hood. It’s been too warm sometimes to wear it it’s that good. I love it.

Reckles5serenade · 28/10/2018 17:18

Are any of these recommendations good for tall people? I'm sick of having cold wrists because all sleeves are 3/4 length on me!

XingMing · 28/10/2018 18:06

I'm not tall but have long arms and Didrikson arms are long. Perhaps worth trying?

MynameisJune · 28/10/2018 18:36

I’m 5’9 and have long arms, my Didrikson coat has great arm length. And it has built in wrist warmers that hook over your thumb to stop the wind going up the sleeve.
